    Abstract
The present work studied bioactive coatings on the surface of ceramic biomaterials. Zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) composites containing 15 mol.-%. Partially stabilised zirconia was prepared after 1 h sintering at 1550°C. Apatite layers were then coated onto the surfaces of composites by the biomimetic method using 1·5-2 multiply concentrations of simulated body fluid (SBF). Before treatment in SBFs, a sodium silicate layer was employed as nucleating agent to induce the formation of a calcium phosphate layer. The effect of immersion time on the morphology of the precipitate was monitored with a scanning electron microscope. X dot maps revealed that there is a relationship between...

    Abstract
In this work successful synthesis of multiwall carbon nanotube (CNT) using solution combustion and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods are reported. Ceramic nanocomposite samples of (Al 2-xFe xO 3)-(y)ZrO 2 formula with x = 0.017, 0.034 and 0.17 and y = 0.15 were initially prepared. These were then subjected to CVD process during which the in situ reduction of iron oxide to metallic iron (Fe/Fe 3C) phase/s provided the necessary catalyst for the CNT formation. The formation of long flexible filaments with a smooth and regular surface bridging between alumina-zirconia (AZ) grains could be detected. The diameters of the formed filaments were in the range of ∼70 to ∼320 nm and length of the...

    , Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Volume 514 , February , 2012 , Pages 150-156 ; 09258388 (ISSN) Asadirad, M ; Yoozbashizadeh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Nanocomposites of Ce-TZP/Al 2O 3 were synthesized by aqueous combustion, and urea, ammonium acetate and glycine were used as mixtures of fuels with the corresponding metal nitrates. Thermodynamic modeling was conducted to anticipate the effect of the alumina content on the exothermicity of the combustion procedure. The thermodynamic properties of the combustion reaction indicated that as the alumina content increased, the amount of gases produced during the reaction increased with a decrease in the adiabatic temperature. Furthermore, to reduce the particle size of the powders, a series of combustion reactions were performed to optimize the fuel composition and alumina content. Ce 0.1Zr 0.9O...

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 527, Issue 3 , 2010 , Pages 449-453 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Dourandish, M ; Simchi, A ; Hokamoto, K ; Tanaka, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The mechanism of interface formation during sinter-joining of nanostructured yttria stabilized zirconia (27 nm) compacts with chromium powder was investigated. The effect of sintering atmosphere, i.e. argon or vacuum, was studied. Microstructural evaluation and phase formation was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA), and micro-focused X-ray diffraction (MFXRD) methods. It is shown that spreading and evaporation-condensation mechanisms are responsible for the interface formation. An improved joint shear-strength was obtained after sintering in vacuum (74 MPa) compared with argon (41 MPa). The result of MFXRD indicated formation of Cr-island at...

    Abstract
Medical engineering advances in total joint replacements and societies’ rising demand for long-lasting materials have proven it essential to manufacture materials that are more similar to the original tissue in the fields of mechanical, tribological, and biological properties. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a polymer widely used in arthroplasty applications due to its biocompatibility, chemical stability, and reasonable mechanical properties; however, it still fails to entirely meet the standards of the hip joint implant. In this study, different concentrations of nanosized zirconia were added to UHMWPE and HAp matrix with an intended application in arthroplasty....

A simple route to synthesize zirconia antistatic thin films on glass substrates and their application to polymer-based composites

    , Article Materials Chemistry and Physics ; Volume 244 , 1 April , 2020 Naderi, A ; Dolati, A ; Afshar, A ; Palardy, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
In this study, zirconia antistatic coatings were synthesized by a simple dip coating sol-gel route on glass substrates, then applied to polymer-based composites to potentially improve their dust or water repellent capabilities. The coating solution contained a precursor (ZrCl4), solvent (isopropanol) and coupling agent. FTIR spectra confirmed ZrO2 and ZrO compounds in both solution and antistatic coating. FE-SEM images indicated ZrO2 fibers’ thickness was controlled by changing ZrCl4 concentration (150 g–15 g ZrCl4/l) or relative humidity (20%–60%) during coating drying. Fibers grew thicker when decreasing the former or increasing the latter. The surface electrical resistivity for all...

    Abstract
We report on the response of a monolithic high Tc transition-edge bolometer to about 3 mmWave for the first time. The detector structure consisting of 400-nm YBa2Cu3O7-x(YBCO) film on buffered yttria stabilized zirconia substrate without any coupled antenna, shows bolometric type responsivity to the 3-mmWave radiation at its transition temperature. The YBCO thin film Ce0.9La0.1O2 buffer layer are both fabricated by the metal-organic deposition method. The meander line pattern of the bolometer is designed for obtaining maximum absorption and responsivity possible when the polarized radiation of the source is aligned with the pattern. Meander lines are 50 micrometers wide and 1.5-mm long. We...

    Abstract
In this investigation, nanostructure Fe3Al was produced by mechanical milling initially. Pure iron and aluminum powders were milled with suitable ratio 86Fe-14Al by weight. Milling was done up to 120 h times and with BPR 10 and BPR 20. Morphological changes, powder density and size, phase and structural changes, grain size and lattice strain were characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and laser particle size analyzer (LPSA). 40 h mechanical alloying with BPR 20 led to the corresponding intermetallic compound, Fe3Al with a nanocrystalline structure. Therefore Fe3Al/ZrO2 micro and nanocomposite powders were synthesized with manufactured by milling of...

    Abstract
The future crisis and environmental pollution led to increasing interest in alternative energy conversion systems such as solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). In this research, the effect of different chemical parameters such as media, additives, particle size distribution and nano NiO addition were initially investigated on the stability of NiO-YSZ suspension by Zetasizer and turbidity...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Soltani, Roghayeh (Author) ; Faghihi Sani, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor) ; Shakhesi, Saeeid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Alumina as an engineering ceramic has special characteristics such as hardness, high abrasive, fatigue and corrosion resistance but suffers from low toughness. One effective method in improving toughness is adding second phases such as tetragonal zirconia and carbon nanotubes.
