    , Article Materials Science and Engineering: A ; Volume 527, Issue 3, 15 January 2010, Pages 449–453 Dourandish, M ; Simchi, A. (Abdolreza) ; Hokamoto, K ; Tanaka, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The mechanism of interface formation during sinter–joining of nanostructured yttria stabilized zirconia (27 nm) compacts with chromium powder was investigated. The effect of sintering atmosphere, i.e. argon or vacuum, was studied. Microstructural evaluation and phase formation was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA), and micro-focused X-ray diffraction (MFXRD) methods. It is shown that spreading and evaporation–condensation mechanisms are responsible for the interface formation. An improved joint shear-strength was obtained after sintering in vacuum (74 MPa) compared with argon (41 MPa). The result of MFXRD indicated formation of Cr-island at...

Effects of ion-exchange and hydrolysis mechanisms on lead silicate glass corrosion

    , Article Corrosion ; Volume 68, Issue 9 , September , 2012 , Pages 793-800 ; 00109312 (ISSN) Ali Rahimi, R ; Sadrnezhaad, S. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Corrosion of lead silicate glass (LSG) contacting 0.5 M aqueous nitric acid (HNO 3) was investigated via scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma analysis, and weight-loss measurement to determine the respective contributions of the ion-exchange vs. the hydrolysis reactions. The LSG having X M ≡ Pb+K+Na/Si mole ratios of less than 0.7 showed very little weight loss with no Si network deterioration. At X M > 0.7, the mechanism changed into the hydrolysis, which caused the formation of a networkless gel layer resting at the solid/liquid interface. Addition of titania (TiO 2) and zirconia (ZrO 2) had disparate effects: X M < 0.7 improved corrosion...

    Abstract
Nanocomposites of Ce-TZP/Al 2O 3 were synthesized by aqueous combustion, and urea, ammonium acetate and glycine were used as mixtures of fuels with the corresponding metal nitrates. Thermodynamic modeling was conducted to anticipate the effect of the alumina content on the exothermicity of the combustion procedure. The thermodynamic properties of the combustion reaction indicated that as the alumina content increased, the amount of gases produced during the reaction increased with a decrease in the adiabatic temperature. Furthermore, to reduce the particle size of the powders, a series of combustion reactions were performed to optimize the fuel composition and alumina content. Ce 0.1Zr 0.9O...

, Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science ; Volume 226, Issue 3 , 2012 , Pages 585-594 ; 09544062 (ISSN) Ghafoori, E ; Asghari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A three-dimensional elasticity solution for the analysis of functionally graded rotating cylinders with variable thickness profile is proposed. The axisymmetric structure has been divided in several divisions in the radial direction. Constant mechanical properties and thickness profile are assumed within each division. The solution is considered for four different thickness profiles, namely constant, linear, concave, and convex. It is shown that the linear, concave, and convex thickness profiles have smaller stress values compared to a constant thickness profile. The effects of various grading indices as well as different boundary conditions, namely solid, free-free hollow and fixed-free...

    Abstract
Nanostructured TiO2-ZrO2 thin films and powders were prepared by a straightforward aqueous particulate sol-gel route. Titanium (IV) isopropoxide and zirconium (IV) acetate hydrate were used as precursors, and hydroxypropyl cellulose was used as a polymeric fugitive agent in order to increase the specific surface area. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy revealed that the powder were crystallised at the low temperature of 500 °C, containing anatase-TiO 2 and tetragonal-ZrO2 phases. Furthermore, it was found that ZrO2 retarded the anatase-to-rutile transformation up to 900 °C. The activation energies for crystallite growth of TiO2 and ZrO2 components in...

However, the room temperature mechanical properties of alumina-spinel-zirconia (AMZ) composite such as fracture toughness were rarely investigated by researchers. In this research the AMZ nanocomposite powders were synthesized via solution combustion method. The dense AMZ composite samples...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Eienkhah, Feryar (Author) ; Faghihi Sani, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Magnesium alloys are used in various industries, due to their excellent combination of low density, high strength to weight ratio and biocompatibility. However, a main drawback of Mg alloys is their poor corrosion and tribological behavior which could be improved by different surface treatments such as plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). Recently, PEO method as a simple and economic process is used to provide thick ceramic coating on Mg alloys. Based on some problems in zirconia coating on Mg substrates, two step PEO coating was introduced. The aim of the present study is to prepare and investigate the properties of zirconia-containing coating by two-step PEO process on the AZ31 Mg alloy...
