, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tavakolian, Sadra (Author) ; Zolghadri, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Grid simulator is a system that, as a voltage source, can produce various current waveforms in power grid at its output, and also as a load, can draw different currents of different loads from the power grid. Grid simulators may be used for testing power grid connected systems, such as chargers, power supplies, etc. In this thesis the system is consisted of programmable AC current source, dual active bridge converter and back-to-back grid-tied inverter. Dual active bridge can normally operate while the current source is in different modes of function, such as constant current, constant power and constant impedance. Depending on the mode of function, the current at the DC link can behave...

Design and Construction of 8 Kilowatt-hour Battery Bank Connected to the Grid in order to Reduce the Peak Load

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tavassoti, Hamid Reza (Author) ; Rajabi Ghahnavieh, Abbas (Supervisor) ; Moeini Aghtaie, Moein (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
With the increase of electric energy demand, one of the human concerns is to create the infrastructure for the production and transmission of energy in order to meet this need. Since the network must have the ability to supply the load during the peak load times, practically during the non-peak load times, many production capacities remain unused and their productivity decreases. One of the ways to reduce this problem due to the increase in penetration of batteries in the network can be the participation of battery banks to inject power into the network during peak load times. The goal of this project is to develop an 8 kilowatt-hour battery bank system that can inject 2 kilowatts of power...

Physical Modeling of Effect of Liquefaction-Induced Lateral Spreading on Single Piles

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Torabi, Hooman (Author) ; Haeri, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Pile foundations suffered severe damages during the past earthquakes in all around the world. These damages were more severe in laterally spreading grounds and they mostly have been observed in gently sloping grounds and coastal areas. In these cases, Pile foundations not only are subjected to structures inertial loads and kinematic loads of liquefied soil but also lateral spreading intensifies damages. Thus, in the recent decade, several researches have been conducted to investigate the behavior of pile foundations in liquefiable and laterally spreading grounds, however, some uncertainties still remain in modeling of soil-pile interaction. In this study, the effects of liquefaction- induced...

    Abstract
The reliability of power converters in various applications, including industrial, military, aerospace, and commercial applications, is of great importance. For this reason, the development of fault-tolerant power converters is crucial from the perspective of system availability and the prevention of adverse consequences. Tolerating various types of faults, maintaining full output capacity after a fault, and cost-effectiveness are the primary challenges for many existing solutions. In this thesis, a fault tolerance solution is presented for a five-level active-neutral-point-clamped converter. The proposed approach enhances fault-tolerant control for the older version of this converter by...

Optimization of BLDC Motor Drivers with Electric Bicycle Application

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bahrami, Mansour (Author) ; Mokhtari, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Electric motors used in electrical vehicles are varied, but in light electric vehicles such as electric motors and electric bikes, with limited space, permanent magnet motors due to their high power density and efficiency are very useful. These motors are divided into two types: trapezoidal and sinusoidal due to the waveform of the Back EMF voltage. The trapezoidal type, also known as the brushless DC motor , is more commonly used in light electric vehicles due to the simplicity of the control system and the lower cost. The control system of the BLDC motor is very important in its performance. Providing a controller for these engines that at low cost improves their performance is considered...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Akbari, Sepideh (Author) ; Ahmadian, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor) ; Manzuri, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In drilling oil well with respect to depth of several thousand meters, knowing the physical conditions of down-hole well such as temperature, pressure and stress have particular importance in prevention of possible injuries such as breaking the drill bit or increasing temperature. If these data can transfer from down-hole to bore-hole of the well, the operators can prevent from critical conditions such as intertangle of the drill-string. Currently, because of this lack of information, there are irreparable damages in oil industry annually. Based on researches, because of down-hole conditions of the well, these data can’t transfer with electromagnetic telemetry. Currently one of the data...

A Mathematical Model to Consider Uncertainty in IMRT Treatment Planning

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amini Zadeh Zare, Monireh (Author) ; Najafi, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy is one of the common methods for treating cancer patients because of the ability to transfer high doses of radiation to the tumor and minimize damage to surrounding healthy organs. In this method, the patient is placed in a special bed, while a linear accelerator directs the beams to radiation to the target's size. Patient treatment requires a unique treatment plan, and optimization of the treatment plan involves two basic decisions: (1) selecting the beam angles; (2) calculating the beams intensity. In the radiation therapy process, there are various uncertainty factors, such as patient setup, tumor volume definition, tumor growth or movement, and the...

The Study of Certain Evidence of Ooguri, Strominger, Vafa Conjecture for 4D Extremal Black Holes of Type and Heterotic Superstring Theories

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Omidi, Farzad (Author) ; Arfaei, Hessamaddin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In 2004 Ooguri, Strominger, and Vafa could write the partition function of 4D N=2 extremal black holes in type IIA superstring theory as the square of the absolute value of the partition function of type A closed topological string theory, which had already been introduced by Edward Witten in 1990. In this study, T and S dualities were applied to the original conjecture of Ooguri, Strominger, and Vafa. By using T duality, we have verified that the conjecture holds for 4D N=2 extremal black holes of type IIB superstring theory to the one loop order in string coupling. In other words, one can write the partition function of these kinds of black holes as the square of the absolute value of...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amjadian, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Fakharzadeh, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, study the design of a compact low-cost integrated time modulated array(TMA). In TMAs, a switch is used instead of a phase shifter, which reduces the area, complexity, power consumption and the final price of the array. The TMAs uses the switch as a control element for array weighting that causes beamforming and beam steering. For the lower cost, designed IC compacted as small as possible and use inexpensive CMOS 180nm technology of TSMC fabrication. Initially, maximum layout size forced 0.7 by 1.5 mm2. The proposed switch type is SPDT that one of its output paths terminated by a matched load and another end to a pad and then by a bond wire connected to an external board that...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahangarzadeh, Amir (Author) ; Shabani, Mahdi (Supervisor) ; Hashemi, Matin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The application of deep learning algorithms in the processing of telecommunication signals is increasing. One of the issues in this area is the automatic recognition of radio signal modulation. Recognizing the type of signal modulation as the first stage of baseband signal processing on the receiver side is a key issue in military and civilian applications. The problem with classical algorithms for solving this problem is their strong dependence on channel characteristics and factors resulting from the transmitter and receiver being non-ideal. However, modern algorithms based on deep neural networks have been able to make the model somewhat resistant to these factors. However, the detection...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aghajani Tularud, Afshin (Author) ; Oraee Mirzamani, Hashem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Brushless DC (BLDC) motors and their drives are penetrating the market of home appliances, HVAC industry, and automotive applications in recent years because of their high efficiency, silent operation, compact form, reliability, and low maintenance. Traditionally, BLDC motors are commutated in six-step pattern with commutation control by position sensors. To reduce cost and complexity of the drive system, sensorless drive is preferred. In BLDC motors, stator winding is energized with appropriate sequencing. The sequence of energizing is determined by rotor position and rotor position is detected by the phase back EMF (BEMF). Motor is energized using an inverter which is controlled by PWM...
