    Theoretical study of high repetition rate short pulse generation with fiber optical parametric amplification [electronic resource]

    Abstract
    In this paper, we study theoretically the generation of high repetition rate short pulses using fiber optical parametric amplification. We show that the pulse shape and duration depend on the signal location relatively to the pump frequency. We demonstrate that in order to get the shortest pulse width, the signal must be located at one of the extremities of the gain spectrum associated with the pump peak power. We derive the analytical expression of the pulse shape in this case and compare it to the exponential gain regime case.     Abstract
    In this letter we consider optimum code structure for positive optical code division multiple-access (optical CDMA) systems. Positive systems are a class of systems that operate with positive real numbers only. We consider the effect of multipleaccess interference in our model and show that code design for both On-Off Keying (OOK) and Binary PPM optical CDMA systems results in the same solutions. Furthermore, we show that a class of codes known as optical orthogonal codes (OOCs) are the best possible positive codes.     In this paper we examine the transmission of two types of ultra-wideband (UWB) signals, multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) and impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB), over single mode fiber at 1550 nm. In order to investigate the impact of optical components such as laser diode, external modulator and single mode fiber on UWB signals, we develop mathematical models for these components. These models are experimentally verified and corresponding numerical parameter values are obtained by experiment.     Nowadays, dynamic analysis of air-conditioner units is essential to achieve satisfactory comfort conditions in buildings with low energy consumption and operation cost. In this paper, a nonlinear multi input-multi output model (MIMO) of an air-handling unit (AHU) is considered. In the presence of realistic harmonic disturbances, nonlinear dynamics of AHU is investigated. The effect of various thermodynamics and geometrical parameters on limit cycles behaviour of the indoor temperature is investigated.     Analytical prediction of the main oscillation power and spurious levels in optoelectronic oscillators

    Abstract
    We use a nonlinear analytic approach to predict the main oscillation mode power and spurious levels in ultrapure microwave optoelectronic oscillators (OEOs). This approach takes into account N simultaneously mode falling inside the RF filter bandwidth and calculates all the dominant InterModulation Products (IMPs) that fall in the fundamental zone. We show that nonlinear microwave photonic links exhibit the capture effect. By considering this effect, we derive analytical expressions that govern the behavior of the OEOs in the steady state.     Abstract
    An electromagnetically induced phase grating (EIG) controlled by coherent population trapping (CPT) in a fourlevel Y-type atomic system is studied. The CPT condition promotes significantly the dispersion of light into the first-order diffraction in constructing a phase modulation grating by transferring energy from zero-order to firstorder diffraction. The diffraction efficiency of the phase grating is enhanced by up to 30% of the total probe intensity at the first-order diffraction. The present atomic scheme takes full advantage of the microwave-driven field for generating the EIG, which induces the quantum coherence and controls linear and nonlinear behaviors of the present system....

    Abstract
    An efficient low-complexity VLSI architecture for timing synchronization of a real-time intensity modulation direct detection optical OFDM (IMDD-OOFDM) system is proposed, which results in a significant area reduction. This architecture calculates the correlation among cyclic prefix (CP) regions to estimate the beginning of the OFDM symbol. The proposed architecture utilizes only one functional unit for this purpose, while the throughput is devised for high data-rate optical OFDM systems.     Comparison of two triple-fiber sensor designs for small distance measurements

    Abstract
    Operation of two different optical fiber sensor designs for distance measurements with a good sensitivity, resolution, and wide dynamic range is reported. Design is based on the intensity modulation due to reflectance measurement from a target surface. Two reported designs are fabricated with a triple-fiber assembly, in which one uses a double-transmitter, while another one uses a double-receiver fiber design. Reflection signals from different targets are tested with these sensors and results for the mirror and A4 paper surfaces are described.     This article examines the Weibull statistical analysis that was used for investigating the effect of melt filtration on tensile properties and defects formed inside the casting. Forming and entrapping of double oxide films have been explained by using the context of critical velocity of melt in the runner. SutCast software results were used to examine the amounts of the velocity of melt as such. SEM/EDX analysis is used to observe the presence of double oxide films in the fracture surfaces of the tensile specimens.     The noise performance of intensity-modulation direct-detection microwave photonic links (MWPL) operating under large-signal conditions has been studied in this paper. A sinusoidal signal plus narrow-band white Gaussian noise is applied at the radio frequency input of the link, and the output spectrum is derived using a nonlinear analytical approach. We show that the output SNR can be severely affected by the interaction of signal and noise due to the nonlinearity of the MWPL combined with the large input modulating signal.     A novel technique is presented to design efficient full-rate space-time block codes (STBCs) over correlated Rician fading channels.     A body insonified by a constant (time-varying) intensity sound field is known to experience a steady (oscillatory) force that is called the steady-state (dynamic) acoustic radiation force.     In this paper, we report our evaluation of the strength of random number generator and RSA key-pair generator of some commercially available constrained hardware modules, i.e., tokens and smart cards. That was motivated after recent related attacks to RSA public keys, which are generated by constrained network devices and smart cards, and turned out to be insecure due to low-quality randomness. Those attacks are mostly computing pair-wise GCD between the moduli in public keys, and resulted in breaking several thousands of these keys.
