Fast Failure Detection in Modular Multilevel Converter Power Switches for Fault Tolerant Operation

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Haghnazari, Saeed (Author) ; Zolghadri, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Multilevel converters are the best solution in medium and high voltage applications because of their better output votage quality, redundant structure, less power semiconductor losses and common-mode voltages. Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) have additional advantages such as higher degree of modularity, transformerless operation capability and using a single common DC-bus. All these useful features make MMC the first alternative for HVDC systems. Fault detection, defected cells insulation and post fault operation control are necessary to ensure MMC continouse service. A simple, fast and accurate fault detection method is proposed for MMC semiconductor power switches in this thesis....

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tebyanian, Afshin (Author) ; Behzad, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Condition monitoring and fault detection is an important way to provide economy in both time and costs. Many methods are developed for this purpose. Vibration analysis is one of the most important ways in this field. In this thesis, fault detection of mechanical rotary systems with nonlinear and non-stationary nature has been developed by use of empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and Hilbert transform. Firstly the measured signal is transformed into some intrinsic mode functions (IMF’s) by EMD, and then the Hilbert transform is implemented on each IMF. With Hilbert transform, the instantaneous frequency of system and then the mean frequency are obtained. Mean frequency is a key definition...

    Abstract
Nowadays, industrial companies deal with a wide range of serious problems in the field of power transmission maintenance and also fault detection. A large amount of money and time is spent on these issues in order to solve them; consequently, there is an essential need for this subject. In this thesis, in order to tackle those major issues which were referred above, an artificial neural network is trained with only one hidden layer. Also, a suitable database for training an efficient neural network is needed. Thus, a one-stage gearbox system with appropriate degrees of freedom is used to set up referred database. In this system, a crack is imposed to a tooth of spur gear with different sizes...

In one case, parameters of membership functions are selected in a conventional manner. In second case, the optimal values of these parameters have been obtained using the genetic algorithm. In another case, the neural network system is used for fault detection. These three cases are compared based on their performances in fault diagnosis of a yeast fermentation bioreactor for three different conditions. The results indicate...

Leak Detection and Location in Oil Transmission Lines by Closed Form Solution and Linear Observer

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Derakhshan, Masoud (Author) ; Haeri, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this paper, an approach is proposed to estimate the location of the leaks in oil pipelines. The pipeline possesses a system of Partial Differential Equations (PDE). First, a closed-form solution is applied to the pipeline equations and the leakage location is found solving the steady-state equations. To tackle the case where the pressure and flowrate do not reach constant values, the initial estimations are provided by the closed-form solution. Then, the pressures, flow rates, and leakage coefficient are estimated by solving the system of differential equations. This system is then discretized with respect to the location variable to yield the system state equations which, in turn, are...

An Accurate Algorithm for Power Transformer Turn to Turn Fault Detection to Enhance the Performance of Differential Relay

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Farzin, Nima (Author) ; Vakilian, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Hajipour, Ehsan (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Power transformer is one of the most important equipment in the power system which plays a key role in the reliability and quality of power delivery. Among numerous failure modes of a typical power transformer, the turn-to-turn fault (TTF) is one of the most prominent reasons for its unplanned outage. A turn-to-turn fault quite often begins with the degradation of the winding insulation between two adjacent turns, then in a short time, this low-level fault can progress to a large number of turns and results in the transformer costly damages. Therefore, it is vital to detect TTF at an early stage and prevent its progression to a catastrophic disaster. The conventional percentage differential...

    Geometric-Based Fault Diagnosis in a Grid-Connected Inverter

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Mashreghi, Ali (Author) ; Namvar, Mehrzad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Inverters are the main utility in transmitting power from distributed generation (DG) systems toward grid and their safe and immune performance has become a major concern among the system designers. In addition to poor power transmittance, faults in inverter can harm other equipment such as DG and local load. Consequently different protections has been considered to increase the reliability of these systems. Some of these protections like fuses and varistors are implemented in the hardware while others are considered in the processor. In the later class of protections, fault detection and isolation (FDI) system has been the subject of intense investigation in inverters over the past two...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Izanlo, Hassan (Author) ; Behzad, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Arghand, Hesamaddin (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, condition monitoring and fault diagnosis are considered as one of the most important maintenance and diagnosis strategies in state-of-the-art industries. Serious damage such as machine and coupled equipment failure, machine failure in a neighborhood in case of severe damage, and production loss will be resulted in late fault detection. One of the critical information in condition monitoring is the machine's rotating speed. In many cases of condition monitoring, the rotating speed, and the machine's technical information (such as bearing characteristic frequency )is not available. In this study, a ruled-base model and an intelligent model are developed for machine running speed...

Nonlinear Geometric Approach to Fault Detection in Mechanical Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mashreghi, Ali (Author) ; Namvar, Mehrzad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The demand for safety operating systems is growing with the new developments in technology. One of the important and critical issues in system monitoring is the capability of the system to detect probable faults and hazards. In model-based fault detection one specific diagnostic signal called residual should be generated for each fault that is only sensitive to a particular fault and independent of other faults and disturbances. In this thesis we try to investigate the nonlinear geometric approach in fault detection of a class of mechanical systems. After a brief introduction to geometric tool for nonlinear inputaffine systems and conditions in which output is decoupled from input, we...

Fault Detection of Offshore Wind Turbines Using Data Driven Methods

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Salari, Soorena (Author) ; Sadati, Nasser (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Technology systems are vulnerable to various defects. Acuator failures reduce the performance of control systems and even they can damage the entire system. Incorrect reading from the sensors is the cause of many inefficiencies, because errors can reduce the quality and efficiency of a product line. In addition, failure of a single system's component can cause a system failure. Electromechanical energy conversion devices are composed of hundreds different components and subunits that are subject to varying adverse environmental conditions, and that is why the sensors, actuators, and components are likely to malfunction. Unexpected defects and unplanned repairs result in high operating costs...

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part D: Journal of Automobile Engineering ; Vol. 228, issue. 8 , 2014 , pp. 970-984 ; ISSN: 09544070 Salehi, R ; Vossoughi, G ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Fault monitoring in internal-combustion engines is crucial for keeping the vehicle performance within the acceptable standards of emission levels and drivers' demands. This paper analyses how a vehicle's performance and engine variables are affected by a leakage fault in the exhaust manifold. The threshold leakage that causes the vehicle to exceed the emission standards is determined for a class M1 vehicle tested on a chassis dynamometer over the New European Driving Cycle. It is shown that, when a leakage of 6 mm diameter on the exhaust manifold is introduced, the vehicle emissions exceed those specified in the European 2013 on-board diagnostics standard. In addition, the effects of the...

    , Article IEEE Embedded Systems Letters ; Vol. 6, issue. 4 , 2014 , pp. 89-92 ; ISSN: 19430663 Mozaffari Kermani, M ; Tian, K ; Azarderakhsh, R ; Bayat Sarmadi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The development of extremely-constrained embedded systems having sensitive nodes such as RFID tags and nanosensors necessitates the use of lightweight block ciphers. Nevertheless, providing the required security properties does not guarantee their reliability and hardware assurance when the architectures are prone to natural and malicious faults. In this letter, error detection schemes for lightweight block ciphers are proposed with the case study of XTEA (eXtended TEA). Lightweight block ciphers such as XTEA, PRESENT, SIMON, and the like might be better suited for low-resource deeply-embedded systems compared to the Advanced Encryption Standard. Three different error detection approaches...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) Systems ; Volume 21, Issue 8 , 2013 , Pages 1454-1468 ; 10638210 (ISSN) Ebrahimi, M ; Miremadi, S. G ; Asadi, H ; Fazeli, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In this paper, we present a scan-chain-based multiple error recovery technique for triple modular redundancy (TMR) systems (SMERTMR). The proposed technique reuses scan-chain flip-flops fabricated for testability purposes to detect and correct faulty modules in the presence of single or multiple transient faults. In the proposed technique, the manifested errors are detected at the modules' outputs, while the latent faults are detected by comparing the internal states of the TMR modules. Upon detection of any mismatch, the faulty modules are located and the state of a fault-free module is copied into the faulty modules. In case of detecting a permanent fault, the system is degraded to a...

    Abstract
We propose a roll-forward error recovery technique based on multiple scan chains for TMR systems, called Scan chained TMR (ScTMR). ScTMR reuses the scan chain flip-flops employed for testability purposes to restore the correct state of a TMR system in the presence of transient or permanent errors. In the proposed ScTMR technique, we present a voter circuitry to locate the faulty module and a controller circuitry to restore the system to the fault-free state. As a case study, we have implemented the proposed ScTMR technique on an embedded processor, suited for safety-critical applications. Exhaustive fault injection experiments reveal that the proposed architecture has the error detection and...

    Abstract
Partial state estimation of dynamical systems provides significant advantages in practical applications. Likewise, pre-compensator design for multi variable systems invokes considerable increase in the order of the original system. Hence, applying functional observer to pre-compensated systems can result in lower computational costs and more practicability in some applications such as fault diagnosis and output feedback control of these systems. In this note, functional observer design is investigated for pre-compensated systems. A lower order pre-compensator is designed based on a H2 norm optimization that is designed as the solution of a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Next, a...

    , Article International Journal of Automotive Technology ; Volume 16, Issue 1 , 2015 , Pages 127-138 ; 12299138 (ISSN) Salehi, R ; Alasty, A ; Shahbakhti, M ; Vossoughi, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Detection and isolation of faults in the exhaust gas path of a turbocharged spark ignition (SI) engine is an essential part of the engine control unit (ECU) strategies to minimize exhaust emission and ensure safe operation of a turbocharger. This paper proposes a novel model-based strategy to detect and isolate an exhaust manifold leakage and a stuckclosed wastegate fault. The strategy is based on a globally optimal parameter estimation algorithm which detects a virtual hole area in the exhaust manifold. The estimation algorithm requires observation of the exhaust manifold’s input and output flows. The input flow is estimated by a nonlinear Luenberger observer which is analytically shown to...
