Reducing the Energy Overhead of Replication Mechanisms in Distributed Embedded Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Salehi Khanghahbar, Mohammad (Author) ; Ejlali, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Distributed embedded systems are widely used in safety-critical applications, such as avionics platform and flight control system. Faults in such applications may cause catastrophic effect. Therefore, these systems must be fault-tolerant and must be designed not only to detect faults but also to recover from faults. Fault tolerance is normally realized on multi-processor system via temporal duplication (time-redundancy) or spatial duplication (hardware-redundancy) depending on the availability of the slack time. Slack time is defined as the difference between the deadline and execution time. Duplication is a common technique to achieve fault tolerance in safety-critical applications, but may...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tebyanian, Afshin (Author) ; Behzad, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Condition monitoring and fault detection is an important way to provide economy in both time and costs. Many methods are developed for this purpose. Vibration analysis is one of the most important ways in this field. In this thesis, fault detection of mechanical rotary systems with nonlinear and non-stationary nature has been developed by use of empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and Hilbert transform. Firstly the measured signal is transformed into some intrinsic mode functions (IMF’s) by EMD, and then the Hilbert transform is implemented on each IMF. With Hilbert transform, the instantaneous frequency of system and then the mean frequency are obtained. Mean frequency is a key definition...

Short-Circuit Failure Detection in Series-Connected IGBTs for Reliability Improvements

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Javidi, Pourya (Author) ; Kaboli, Shahriyar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In high-voltage power electronics systems where the supply voltage exceeds the maximum voltage these devices can withstand, series-connected IGBTs with TO-247 packaging and simultaneous gate command circuitry are used to create a high-voltage switch with an on and off time equivalent to a single IGBT. By considering voltage protection circuits for the series IGBTs, the large supply voltage is approximately evenly divided among the series switches. The resulting high-voltage switch has smaller conduction and switching losses compared to single high-voltage switches, has a lower finished price, and its turn-on time is much shorter due to their smaller gate-emitter junction capacitance...

Fault Detection of Offshore Wind Turbines Using Data Driven Methods

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Salari, Soorena (Author) ; Sadati, Nasser (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Technology systems are vulnerable to various defects. Acuator failures reduce the performance of control systems and even they can damage the entire system. Incorrect reading from the sensors is the cause of many inefficiencies, because errors can reduce the quality and efficiency of a product line. In addition, failure of a single system's component can cause a system failure. Electromechanical energy conversion devices are composed of hundreds different components and subunits that are subject to varying adverse environmental conditions, and that is why the sensors, actuators, and components are likely to malfunction. Unexpected defects and unplanned repairs result in high operating costs...

Turn-to-Turn Fault Detection in Power Transformers in the Presence of Inrush Current

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fallah Mollamahmod, Mahdi (Author) ; Hajipour, Ehsan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the most critical equipments in power grids are power transformers, which are vulnerable to damage due to the possibility of faults in its various components. A very common category of such faults is turn-to-turn fault in its winding. This fault initiates by the aging of the winding insulation with a short circuit of several adjacent loops to each other and if it is not detected quickly by the transformer protection, it will spread rapidly and can lead to irreparable failure in the transformer. Traditionally, turn-to-turn fault should be detected by mechanical pressure relays, however, due to the poor performance of these relays in the rapid detection of this type of fault, in the...
