Autonomous power management in LVDC microgrids based on a superimposed frequency droop

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics ; 2017 ; 08858993 (ISSN) Peyghami, S ; Mokhtari, H ; Blaabjerg, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper a novel droop approach for autonomous power management in low voltage dc microgrids based on a master-slave concept is presented. Conventional voltage-based droop approaches suffer from poor power sharing due to line resistance effects on a virtual resistance, which is solved a by introducing a communication system to increase the current sharing accuracy. In this paper, a virtual frequency is superimposed by the master units, and slave units determine their output power according to the corresponding frequency-based droop characteristics. Unlike the voltage-droop methods, the proposed virtual frequency-droop approach can be applied for proportional power management among the...

    Abstract
The battery management system (BMS) in electric vehicles monitors the state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH) of lithium-ion battery by controlling transient parameters such as voltage, current, and temperature prevents the battery from operating outside the optimal operating range. The main feature of the battery management system is the correct estimation of the SOC in the broad range of vehicle navigation. In this paper, to estimate real-time of SOC in lithium-ion batteries and overcome faults of Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), the Square-Root Sigma Point Kalman Filter is applied on the basis of numerical approximations rather than analytical methods of EKF. For this purpose, the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Pakravan, Shayan (Author) ; Aryanpour, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Shafie, Mohammad Behshad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Lithium-ion batteries have the ability to store a significant amount of energy and work at high power, which has led to the wide spread of their use in various industries. In high-power applications, battery heat management increases lifespan, safety, and reduces battery power loss. In this study, the heat management of a very common and widely used 18650 battery using multi-layered phase change material has been investigated. The reason for using multiple layers is that each phase change material has its own weaknesses in addition to its advantages. It is expected that with the proper use of several phase change materials in the thermal management system, the materials will reduce the...

    Abstract
We report improved performance of Li-ion polymer batteries through advanced gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs). Compared to solid and liquid electrolytes, GPEs are advantageous as they can be fabricated in different shapes and geometries; also ionic properties are significantly superior to that of solid and liquid electrolytes. We have synthetized GPE in form of membranes by trapping ethylene carbonate and propylene carbonate in a composite of polyvinylidene fluoride and N-methylpyrrolidinore. By applying phase-transfer method, we synthetized membranes with micro-pores, which led to higher ionic conductivity. The proposed membrane is to be modified further to have higher capacity, stronger...

    Abstract
Discharge characteristics of nanorods (NRs), microsized and nanosized copper (II) oxide (CuO) particles prepared via thermal decomposition and thermal oxidation routes are examined as cathode materials of a Zn/CuO cell without membrane separators. The electrochemical discharge is examined galvanostatically at a current density of 500 mAg−1 and reveals that the first discharge cycles of all the CuO materials contain one potential plateau; subsequent discharge cycles involve three potential plateaus. Each potential plateau is due to an electrochemical reaction. The first, second, and third potential plateaus are attributed to Cu2O3, CuO, and Cu2O discharges,...

    Abstract
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles draw electricity from the electrical grid and store energy in their batteries. To increase charge availability for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, on-board chargers can be used, which should be small in size and lightweight. In this article, an on-board bidirectional soft-switched battery charger is proposed that utilizes a phase-shift-controlled dual-bridge series resonant converter with isolation. The bidirectional characteristic of proposed charger makes it suitable for vehicle-to-grid operation (i.e., injecting power from the vehicle to the grid) in smart grids. A switching control scheme is also proposed to provide soft-switching operation for all...
