    Abstract
Increasing the intermittent outputs of renewable energy sources (RESs) has forced planners to define a new concept named flexibility. In this regard, some short- and long-term solutions, such as transmission expansion planning (TEP) and energy storage systems (ESSs) have been suggested to improve the flexibility amount. A proper optimization procedure is required to choose an optimal solution to improve flexibility. Therefore, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) direct-optimization TEP versus ESSs co-planning model is presented in this paper to enhance power system flexibility. In doing so, a novel RES-BESS-based grid-scale system flexibility metric is proposed to investigate the...

    Abstract
This paper adopts a holistic approach to stress detection issues in software and hardware phases and aims to develop and evaluate a specific low-power and low-cost sensor using physiological signals. First, a stress detection model is presented using a public data set, where four types of signals, temperature, respiration, electrocardiogram (ECG), and electrodermal activity (EDA), are processed to extract 65 features. Using Kruskal-Wallis analysis, it is shown that 43 out of 65 features demonstrate a significant difference between stress and relaxed states. K nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm is implemented to distinguish these states, which yields a classification accuracy of 96.0 ± 2.4%. It...

Compromising wind and solar energies from the power system adequacy viewpoint

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Systems ; Volume 27, Issue 4 , 2012 , Pages 2368-2376 ; 08858950 (ISSN) Safdarian, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Aminifar, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Miscellaneous sorts of renewable energies, despite of their positive impacts on the power system operation cost and environmental concerns, could jeopardize the system reliability due to introducing significant degrees of intermittency and uncertainty. This challenge could be overcome by composing various sources of renewable energies with complimentary natures. This paper devises an explicit mathematical framework to compromise the contribution of wind and solar energies. The optimization problem is to maximize the system reliability subject to a fixed monetary investment associated with both wind and solar. The problem formulation is based on mixed-integer programming (MIP) format in which...

Characterization of LiCoO2 nanopowders produced by sol-gel processing

    , Article Journal of Nanomaterials ; Volume 2010 , 2010 ; 16874110 (ISSN) Asgari, S ; Soltanmohammad, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
LiCoO2 nanopowders, one of the most important cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries, were synthesized via a modified sol-gel process assisted with triethanolamine (TEA) as a complexing agent. The influence of three different chelating agents including acrylic acid, citric acid, and oxalic acid on the size and morphology of particles was investigated. Structure and morphology of the synthesized powders were characterized by thermogravimetric/ differential thermal analyses (TG/DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Results indicate that the powder processed with TEA and calcinated at 800 °C had an excellent hexagonal ordering of α-NaFeO2 -type (space...

An adaptive approach for PEVs charging management and reconfiguration of electrical distribution system penetrated by renewables

, Article IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics ; 2017 ; 15513203 (ISSN) Rahmani Andebili, M ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
An adaptive approach for distribution system reconfiguration and charging management of plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) is presented in this study. A stochastic model predictive control is applied to stochastically, adaptively, and dynamically reconfigure the system, manage the incidental charging pattern of PEVs, and deal with the variable and uncertain power of renewable energy sources. The objective function of problem is minimizing daily operation cost of system. Herein, the geography of area is considered and the behavior of PEVs' drivers (based on their income level) is modeled with respect to the value of incentive and their hourly distance from each charging station. It is shown that...

    Abstract
In this study, the optimal sizing and performance analysis of a standalone integrated solar power system equipped with different storage scenarios to supply the power demand of a household is presented. One of the main purposes when applying solar energy resource is to face the increasing environmental pollutions resulting from fossil fuel based electricity sector. To this end, and to compare and examine two energy storage technologies (battery and hydrogen storage technology), three storage scenarios including battery only, hydrogen storage technology only and hybrid storage options are evaluated. An optimization framework based on Energy Hub concept is used to determine the optimum sizes...

    Abstract
Glass-ceramic composites in the SiO2-CaO-MgO-(Na2O) system, reinforced with 5, 10 and 20 wt.% aluminum titanate were synthesized by pressureless sintering. Optimum sintering temperatures with maximum relative density were determined for each composition. The composites were fired above the crystallization peak temperature of glass-ceramic. Mechanical properties of glass-ceramic and sintered composites, such as fracture toughness, flexural strength and Vickers microhardness, were investigated. The sintered composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the composite containing 10...

An advanced distributed power supply for power electronic transformers

    , Article IECON 2007, 33rd Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, Taipei, 5 November 2007 through 8 November 2007 ; 2007 , Pages 2038-2043 ; 1424407834 (ISBN); 9781424407835 (ISBN) Saghaleini, M ; Hekmati, A ; Farhangi, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The idea of power electronic transformer (PET), which work with solid-state switches, have been considered noticeably recently. Every power electronic transformer has several parts which each of them needs its own reliable supply voltage. So the appropriate performance of a PET depends on the existence of various proper supply voltages. The distributed power supply (DPS), which can produce several different supply voltages simultaneously with various powers and high reliability, may be the optimum choice available for the supply of different modules of a PET. Additionally, distributed energy generation sources may be used as the alternative source for the PET which in that case it's...

Low temperature nanostructured lithium titanates: Controlling the phase composition, crystal structure and surface area

    , Article Journal of Sol-Gel Science and Technology ; Volume 55, Issue 1 , 2010 , Pages 19-35 ; 09280707 (ISSN) Mohammadi, M. R ; Fray, D. J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Low temperature lithium titanate compounds (i.e., Li4Ti 5O12 and Li2TiO3) with nanocrystalline and mesoporous structure were prepared by a straightforward aqueous particulate sol-gel route. The effect of Li:Ti molar ratio was studied on crystallisation behaviour of lithium titanates. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed that the powders were crystallised at the low temperature of 500 °C and the short annealing time of 1 h. Moreover, it was found that Li:Ti molar ratio and annealing temperature influence the preferable orientation growth of the lithium titanate compounds. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images showed that the average...
