    Abstract
In this study, 490 nm thin tin selenide thin films were deposited by facile co-evaporation techniques using Sn and Se sources on a clean glass substrate. The thin films were annealed at moderate annealing temperature followed by characterization and analysis. The thin annealed films possess polycrystalline nature and orthorhombic structure with an average grain size of 130 nm. The band gap assessed from absorption spectra for the highly annealed sample was 1.52 eV. The resistivity and sheet resistance were measured with four-probe techniques and the sheet resistance was =1.362 × 104 ohm for the highly annealed film. © 2021 John Wiley & Sons Ltd

    Abstract
A simple biofilm model based on a model suggested by Soda et al. [S. Soda, E. Heinzle, M. Fujita, Modeling and simulation of competition between two microorganisms for a single inhibitory substrate in a biofilm reactor, Biotechnol. Bioeng. 66 (1999) 258-264] was used to simulate the competition between two microorganisms for space and a single inhibitory substrate in a biofilm reactor. Different growth kinetics were used to describe the growth of two microorganisms A and B which utilize the inhibitory substrate and the effect of biofilm thickness on microorganism concentration in biofilm was discussed. It was assumed that the biofilm has a uniform thickness and is composed of N segments (N =...

    Abstract
Tunable metasurfaces can shift their resonant frequency through different approaches, one of which is applying mechanical deformations. Here, we show the effects of two key factors on the tunability of deformable metasurfaces; the resonator geometry and substrate stiffness. To show the effects, we compared the tunability of unit cells with three resonator geometries and three common substrates at microwave frequencies from 1 GHz to 10 GHz under a given mechanical deformation. We showed that the resonator geometry affects the deformation field, as a consequence, causes different resonant frequency shifts. Moreover, it affects the stress field in the metasurface which in turn limits the...

    Abstract
APS (3-Aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane) and APhS (p-Aminophenyl) trimethoxysilane) are the most commonly used linkers on a silicon surface. We investigate the surface properties of the structures, including APS or APhS on a silicon substrate. The studied structures consist of APS or APhS linkers with one, two, or three bonds with a substrate, which is a thin layer of Si with crystal orientation 〈1 0 0〉 or 〈1 1 1〉. Using a first-principles study based on density functional theory (DFT), we investigated the electronic and optical properties of the silicon-linker interface, such as interface states, orbital location, dielectric function, and photon absorption. The effects of linker type, number...

Studying the Interaction Between Dislocation Sandin Homogeneities in Nano-Scale, by Incorporating Surface Effect

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadzadeh Bakhshayesh, Hossein (Author) ; Mohammadi Shodja, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
By considering the effect of surface/interface stress, classical problems of the interaction between dislocations and inhomogeneities are addressed. Especifically two distinct problems are solved, the first one is consisted of an edge dislocation located near an elliptical nano-inhomogeneity and the second one hasa screw dislocation laid in the core-shell nanowire. The stress field as well as the image force on the dislocation are calculated and discussed in detail. Results show that by decreasing the dimension of the problem to nano-scale, the differences between classical elasticity and surface approachincrease rapidly. By considering the effect of the surface/interface stress, new...

Estimation of Material Properties and Residual Stress Induced in Metallic Thin Films Synthesized by Thermal Sintering

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Keikhaie, Mahdi (Author) ; Akbari, Javad (Supervisor) ; Movahhedy, Mohammad Reza (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Thin films of materials, in order to have magnificent structure and properties, can use in complicated technology such as; electronic, optic and magnetic systems. Printed interconnects can be made by the deposition of suspensions of metal nanoparticles (e.g., silver and gold) followed by thermal sintering. The nanoparticle sintering process involves atomic diffusion resulting in shrinkage. As a result, the interconnects are prone to residual stresses generated during the thermal sintering process. The residual stress can cause cracks and delamination in the thin films and can cause permanent geometrical changes in the underlying substrates which may affect the functionality of the...

    , Article Applied Surface Science ; Volume 257, Issue 8 , February , 2011 , Pages 3291-3297 ; 01694332 (ISSN) Roozbehi, M ; Sangpour, P ; Khademi, A ; Moshfegh, A. Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
The ZnO nanowires have been synthesized using vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) process on Au catalyst thin film deposited on different substrates including Si(1 0 0), epi-Si(1 0 0), quartz and alumina. The influence of surface roughness of different substrates and two different environments (Ar + H2 and N2) on formation of ZnO nanostructures was investigated. According to AFM observations, the degree of surface roughness of the different substrates is an important factor to form Au islands for growing ZnO nanostructures (nanowires and nanobelts) with different diameters and lengths. Si substrate (without epi-taxy layer) was found that is the best substrate among Si (with epi-taxy layer), alumina and...

    Abstract
Using molecular dynamics, the behavior of nanoparticles during manipulation process is investigated in this paper. The system consists of a tip, cluster and substrate. The focus of the present research is on ultra-fine metallic nanoclusters. The system of concern is made of different transition metals. Two criteria have been proposed for evaluation of success in a pushing process. Such criteria describe the intactness of nanoparticle/substrate pair. The effects of cluster material and manipulation speed on the success of the process are investigated by atomistic simulations. Such qualitative simulation studies can evaluate the level of success of manipulation regarding different working...

Inclusion problems associated with thin fcc films: linkage between eigenstrain and inter-atomic potential

    , Article Mechanics of Materials ; Volume 39, Issue 8 , 2007 , Pages 803-818 ; 01676636 (ISSN) Shodja, H. M ; Pahlevani, L ; Hamed, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
Often, during fabrication of thin films on substrates, different types of defects may be introduced into the films. Recently, the determination of the elastic fields due to the self-assembly of quantum dots or strained islands in thin films has been of major concern. In the micromechanical studies, such strained islands are modeled by inclusions. This paper aims to develop a theory pertaining to the presence of nano-inclusions of various geometries within thin films having face centered cubic (fcc) structure. To this end, the notion of eigenstrain is combined with a many body inter-atomic potential suitable for fcc crystals. The interaction between atoms is modeled via Sutton-Chen (SC)...

    Abstract
Eu3+- and Ce3+-doped yttrium silicate, as well as Eu2+-doped zinc silicate nanoparticles, were grown in a porous SiO2 matrix using an impregnation method. For Y2Si 2O7:Eu3+, particles of about 50 nm size were obtained that exhibited several photoluminescence (PL) peaks in red. Different peaks showed slightly different decay times; however, their excitation mechanism was found the same. Increasing the Eu concentration increased the PL intensity while reducing the decay time. Y2Si2O7:Ce 3+ nanoparticles in the porous matrix showed bright blue emission, consisting of two peaks at 358 nm and 378 nm. Re-impregnation process was found effective in changing the relative intensity of the two peaks....

    Abstract
Local photodegradation of graphene oxide sheets at the tip of ZnO nanorods was used to achieve semiconducting graphene nanomeshes. The chemically exfoliated graphene oxide sheets, with a thickness of ∼0.9 nm, were deposited on quartz substrates. Vertically aligned ZnO nanorod arrays with diameters of 140 nm and lengths of <1 μm were grown on a glass substrate by using a hydrothermal method. The graphene oxide sheets were physically attached to the tip of the ZnO nanorods by assembling the sheets on the nanorods. UV-assisted photodegradation of the graphene oxide sheets (with dimension of ∼5 × 5 μm) at a contact place with the ZnO nanorods resulted in graphene nanomeshes with a pore size of...

The best coloring/bleaching velocity was attained with a growth time of 2 min. The effect of growing time and growth feature of Pd particles was further studied using Scanning...

Biological hydrogen production by Enterobacter aerogenes: Structural analysis of treated rice straw and effect of substrate concentration

    , Article International Journal of Hydrogen Energy ; Volume 43, Issue 18 , 2018 , Pages 8718-8728 ; 03603199 (ISSN) Asadi, N ; Karimi Alavijeh, M ; Zilouei, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
The effect of organosolv pretreatment on the structure of rice straw was analyzed under different treatment severities and solvent concentrations. At higher severities, on account of a greater fragmentation of less crystalline parts, including amorphous cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, the severer the pretreatment was, the higher the crystallinity index became; however, changes in the index was less tangible with a severity factor lower than 3.3. At the low to mild pretreatment temperatures (120 °C and 150 °C), higher ethanol concentrations led to the lower crystallinity index. Despite an increasing trend of crystallinity index at harsh conditions, SEM images indicated the formation of...

Design of terahertz photoconductive antenna arrays based on defective photonic crystal substrates

    , Article Optics and Laser Technology ; Volume 114 , 2019 , Pages 89-94 ; 00303992 (ISSN) Rahmati, E ; Ahmadi Boroujeni, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2019
    Abstract
In this paper, arrays of two different terahertz (THz) antennas based on defective photonic crystal (DPC) substrates are proposed and their radiation characteristics are investigated by using full-wave simulation. We show that employing DPC substrates in THz photoconductive antenna (PCA) arrays reduces the amount of power coupled to the substrate surface waves and, as a result, decreases the mutual coupling between the elements of the antenna array and increases the directivity in the boresight direction. By studying 1 × 2 arrays of bowtie and four-leaf-clover-shaped antennas, we show that either the improvement of directivity in a broad bandwidth or the enhancement of photomixer antenna...

A pre-coat of peroxotitanium complex was employed to improve adhesion and inhibit the substrate degradation. The coating...

Numerical Investigation of Motion of Nanodroplets on Wetting Gradient Surfaces

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammadi, Ahmad (Author) ; Moosavi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A droplet placed on the boundary of two solids with different wettabilities will move to the more wettable part. This is a well-known phenomenon and has been extensively used in a variety of processes and applications ranging from biological systems and ink jet printing to the commercial lab-on-a-chip. Because of its importance, many studies are conducted around this phenomenon. The difference between the equilibrium contact angles of the droplet on the two parts gives rise to an interfacial driving force which moves the droplet. Such a motion is not continuous as the droplet slides to the more wettable area, the driving force diminishes and consequently the droplet stops. A non-stop motion...

Through Silicon Via (TSV) to Transistor Noise Coupling Characterization

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amiri, Sajjad (Author) ; Sarvari, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to the physical limitations of the conventional 2D ICs at Giga-Scale Integration, modern technologies have been emerged. Among them, through silicon via (TSV) - based 3D ICs have been used to continue Moore’s law in the interconnect era. In these systems, dies are stacked at z-direction after wafer thinning. Electrical connections between stacked dies are done by TSVs. One important advantage of 3D integration technology is their ability to stack heterogeneous systems with different technologies on a single chip. This will not only increase interconnect density but also will reduce the delay and power consumption. However, nowadays, fabrication and optimum design of TSVs are still big...
