    Abstract
UHMWPE composite materials are increasingly used in armors design due to their high strength-to-weight ratios and energy absorption capacities. In this study the effect of production parameters upon the terminal ballistic properties of UHMWPE composite were examined under different conditionings. The composite armor plate laminates were produced by hot pressing with three different pressing times from 10-30 minutes and the laminates conditioned at +115, +125, and +135°C. The molding temperature of SK66 fiber composite has the main direct effect on the ballistic absorption energy, so the relation of molding temperature with the adhesive bonding force between layers, the thickness of the...

Effect of organoclay loading and electron beam irradiation on the physico-mechanical properties of low-density polyethylene/ethylene-vinyl acetate blend

    , Article Polymers for Advanced Technologies ; Volume 22, Issue 12 , 2011 , Pages 2352-2359 ; 10427147 (ISSN) Shojaei, A ; Behradfar, A ; Sheikh, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The influence of electron beam (EB) irradiation and organoclay (OC) loading on the properties of low-density polyethylene (LDPE)/ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) blends was investigated. The samples were subjected to the EB irradiation with the dose values of 50 and 250kGy. X-ray diffraction (XRD), gel content, mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties were utilized to analyze the characteristics of the LDPE/EVA blends with and without OC at different irradiation dosages. Gel content analysis showed that the OC promotes considerably the insoluble part so that the LDPE/EVA blends filled with OC become fully crosslinked at 250kGy; possibly through the formation of further crosslinks between...

    Abstract
Linear silicone rubber and polyethylene alloy produced from extrusion-injecting process will be present in separate phases. While samples are mixed with 1% dicumylperoxide, DCP, and injected in extruder, an alloy is almost formed. In addition, when the samples containing silicon rubber with vinyl group are mixed with polyethylene and passed in the vicinity of electron beam, a similar reaction occurs, as confirmed from FTIR spectrum. The water contact angles for the samples has been listed in the article. Furthermore, the crystallinity of samples produced via electron beam method is more than that obtained from peroxide method. On the other hand, the tensile strengths of produced samples via...

    Abstract
Linear-dendritic triblock copolymers of linear poly(ethylene glycol) and hyperbranched poly(citric acid) (PCA-PEG-PCA) were used as the reducing and capping agents to encapsulate gold and silver nanoparticles (AuNPs and AgNPs). PCA-PEG-PCA copolymers in four different molecular weights were synthesized using 2, 5, 10 and 20 citric acid/PEG molar ratios and were called A 1, A 2, A 3 and A 4, respectively. Nanoparticles were encapsulated simultaneously during the preparation process. AuNPs were simply synthesized and encapsulated by addition a boiling aqueous solution of HAuCl 4 to aqueous solutions of A 1, A 2, A 3 and A 4. In the case of silver, an aqueous solution of AgNO 3 was reduced...

The effect of protein corona on doxorubicin release from the magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles with polyethylene glycol coating

    , Article Journal of Nanoparticle Research ; Volume 17, Issue 4 , April , 2015 ; 13880764 (ISSN) Pourjavadi, A ; Tehrani, Z. M ; Mahmoudi, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Kluwer Academic Publishers  2015
    Abstract
In the present work, biocompatible superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles coated by mesoporous silica were used as drug nanocarriers for doxorubicin (Dox; an anticancer drug) delivery. In biological media, the interaction of protein corona layer with the surface of nanoparticles is inevitable. For this reason, we studied the effect of protein corona on drug release from magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MMSNs) in human plasma medium. Besides, we used hydrophilic and biocompatible polymer, polyethylene glycol (PEG), to decrease protein corona effects. The results showed the increased Dox release from PEGylated MMSNs compared with bare MMSNs. This result indicated that the coating...

    Abstract
Polyethylene oxide (PEO)/chitosan (CS)/graphene oxide (GO) electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds were successfully developed via electrospinning process for controlled release of doxorubicin (DOX). The SEM analysis of nanofibrous scaffolds with different contents of GO (0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and 0.7 wt.%) indicated that the minimum diameter of nanofibers was found to be 85 nm for PEO/CS/GO 0.5% nanofibers. The π-π stacking interaction between DOX and GO with fine pores of nanofibrous scaffolds exhibited higher drug loading (98%) and controlled release of the DOX loaded PEO/CS/GO nanofibers. The results of DOX release from nanofibrous scaffolds at pH 5.3 and 7.4 indicated strong pH dependence. The...

    Abstract
The graphene-based Ziegler-Natta catalyst has been used to prepare ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene/graphene oxide (UHMWPE/GO) nanocomposite via in situ polymerization. The morphological investigations have been conducted using X-ray diffraction patterns and scanning electron microscopy method. The obtained results indicated that no diffraction peak is detected in a GO pattern, which could be due to the exfoliation of graphene nanosheets in the UHMWPE matrix. Morphological investigations indicated that GO nanosheets are dispersed almost uniformly in polymeric matrix, and that there should exist a good interaction between nanofillers and matrix. The mechanical properties of the...

    Abstract
In this research, partitioning of β-amylase and amyloglucosidase was investigated in polymer-salt aqueous two-phase systems containing poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with different molecular weights such as 4000, 6000 and 10,000 and Na2SO4 or KH2PO4. The experimental partition coefficients were measured at T = (298.5, 301.5, 303.5, 305.5 and 308) K. The results showed that the concentration of salt in feed had more effect on partition coefficients of β-amylase and amyloglucosidase in aqueous two-phase systems than the concentration of polymer in initial feed. Also, the results indicated that temperature had a small effect on partitioning of β-amylase and amyloglucosidase enzymes. The partition...

Turnip (brassica rapa) peroxidase: Purification and characterization

    , Article Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research ; Volume 48, Issue 23 , Volume 48, Issue 23 , 2009 , Pages 10614-10618 ; 08885885 (ISSN) Motamed, S ; Ghaemmaghami, F ; Alemzadeh, I ; Sharif University of Technology
    ACS  2009
    Abstract
Partial purification of plant peroxidase from turnip (Brassica rapa) was optimized. Aqueous two phase system and precipitation by ammonium sulfate (as two parallel purification methods) were used. Polyethylene glycol/ammonium sulfate/NaCl (25:7:3%, w/v) system followed by gel-filtration chromatography gave a purification factor of about 36 fold. On the other hand, ammonium sulfate precipitation (60-80% deg) followed by gel filtration gave only about 13 purification fold. Hence, the aqueous two-phase system was more efficient and useful method as a primary purification step since it was less laborious, less time-consuming, and led to more purification factor. The partially purified turnip...

Specific picomolar detection of a breast cancer biomarker her-2/neu protein in serum: electrocatalytically amplified electroanalysis by the aptamer/peg-modified electrode

    Abstract
Specific and sensitive electroanalysis of blood-circulating protein cancer biomarkers is often complicated by interference from serum proteins nonspecifically adsorbing at the biosensing interface and masking specific reactions of interest. Here, we have developed an electrocatalytically amplified assay for specific and sensitive analysis of human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER-2/neu, a protein cancer biomarker over-expressed in breast cancers) that allows us to avoid both the interference from bovine serum albumin (BSA) and electrocatalytic amplification of the signal stemming from the specific aptamer−HER-2/neu binding. A HER-2/neu-specific thiolated aptamer sequence was...

Fabrication of sintered porous polymeric materials: effect of chain interdiffusion time on mechanical properties

    , Article Polymer International ; Volume 67, Issue 4 , 2018 , Pages 422-430 ; 09598103 (ISSN) Salari, M ; Pircheraghi, G ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Ltd  2018
    Abstract
In this study, sintered porous polymeric materials made of high density polyethylene (HDPE) were fabricated through controlling the chain interdiffusion time at the transition temperature of semicrystalline and melt states. At this intermediate state, where both crystalline and amorphous phases coexist, the interfacial welding of HDPE particles is facilitated thanks to interdiffusion caused by chain relaxation phenomena. Then, by assuming a spherical shape and a cubic packing configuration of particles, a geometrical model was developed to predict porosity variations as sintering progresses. Moreover, the HDPE used, as a broad molecular weight distributed polymer, has different family chains...

Study of phase behaviour for the aqueous two-phase polymer - polymer systems using the modified UNIQUAC-NRF model

    , Article Physics and Chemistry of Liquids ; Volume 47, Issue 2 , 2009 , Pages 148-159 ; 00319104 (ISSN) Pazuki, G. R ; Taghikhani, V ; Ghotbi, C ; Vossoughi, M ; Radfarnia, H. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
A modified form of the UNIQUAC-NRF activity coefficient model was used to study the phase behaviour of the aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and dextran (DEX) with different molecular weights at various temperatures. In the proposed model, a ternary interaction parameter was added to the expression for the excess Gibbs free energy and, in turn, to the corresponding activity coefficient rendered by the UNIQUAC-NRF model. The combinatorial part of the new model takes the same form as that of the original UNIQUAC model and the residual part considers the nonrandomness and also the binary and the ternary interactions among the molecules in mixtures of PEG, DEX, and...
