    Abstract
Microrings can have different hysteresis characteristics at their different resonance frequencies. They can be used as a multi-hysteresis optical component. In this paper an optical D-flip-flop circuit composed of a single nonlinear passive microring coupled to two straight waveguide based on the Kerr effect is proposed. The proposed circuit can operate as an optical digital circuit which synchronizes input DATA with the CLOCK of the circuit. A simple analytical model for hysteresis design and the transient analysis of the proposed D-flip-flop are presented. According to our model, the switching time of the flip-flop is in the order of 10 ps. Crown Copyright © 2008

    Abstract
We produced ZnO nanoparticles by high current electrical arc discharge of zinc electrodes in deionized (DI) water. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows formation of crystalline ZnO phase with hexagonal structure and 14 nm single crystalline domain size. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) result indicates that at 5 A arc current, the size of the particles is about 100 nm and increases by increasing the arc current. Absorption spectroscopy of the samples obtained at different arc currents shows an absorption edge on 370 nm which has a red shift by increasing the arc current. Band gap of the produced ZnO nanoparticles at 5 A arc current corresponds to 3.8 eV which decreases to 3.3 eV by...

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose a design for an all-optical R-S flip-flop with separate set and reset inputs, which is based on the optical bistability due to Kerr and two-photon absorption (TPA) effects in the microring resonators. Based on the steady state analysis of the light propagation in nonlinear microrings, variations of hysteresis parameters versus the system variables, such as transmission coefficient, nonlinear refractive index and detuning angle, are analyzed. The switching temporal behavior of the proposed flip-flop is obtained by the microring transient analysis. It is shown that the contrast ratio parameter and the switching power of the proposed all-optical flip-flop can be...

    Abstract
The determination of chiral compounds is critically important in chemical and pharmaceutical sciences. Cysteine amino acid is one of the important chiral compounds where each enantiomer (L and D) has different effects on fundamental physiological processes. The unique optical properties of nanoparticles make them a suitable probe for the determination of different analytes. In this work, the water-soluble thioglycolic acid (TGA)-capped cadmium-telluride (CdTe) quantum dots (QDs) were applied as optical nanoprobe for the simultaneous determination of cysteine enantiomers. The difference in the kinetics of the interactions between L- and D-cysteine with CdTe QDs is used for multivariate...

The lake urmia environmental disaster in Iran: a look at aerosol pollution

    , Article Science of the Total Environment ; Volume 633 , 2018 , Pages 42-49 ; 00489697 (ISSN) Hossein Mardi, A ; Khaghani, A ; MacDonald, A. B ; Nguyen, P ; Karimi, N ; Heidary, P ; Karimi, N ; Saemian, P ; Sehatkashani, S ; Tajrishy, M ; Sorooshian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Lake Urmia (LU) once was the second largest hypersaline lake in the world, covering up to 6000 km2, but has undergone catastrophic desiccation in recent years resulting in loss of 90% of its area and extensive coverage by playas and marshlands that represent a source of salt and dust. This study examines daily Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) between 2001 and 2015 over northwestern Iran, which encompasses LU. Intriguingly, salt emissions from the LU surface associated with ongoing desiccation do not drive the study region's AOD profile, whereas pollution transported from other regions and emissions around LU are more important....

    Abstract
Gold-silver alloy nanoparticles with various Au concentrations in sputtered SiO2 thin films were synthesized by using RF reactive magnetron co-sputtering and then heat-treated in reducing Ar + H2 atmosphere at different temperatures. The UV-visible absorption spectra of the bimetallic systems confirmed the formation of alloy nanoparticles. The optical absorption of the Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles exhibited only one plasmon resonance absorption peak located at 450 nm between the absorption bands of pure Au and Ag nanoparticles at 400 and 520 nm, respectively, for the thin films annealed at 800 °C. The maximum absorption wavelength of the surface plasmon band showed a red shift with increasing...

    Abstract
In this study, electrochromic properties of cuprous oxide nanoparticles, self-accumulated on the surface of a sol-gel silica thin film, have been investigated by using UV-visible spectrophotometry in a lithium-based electrolyte cell. The cuprous oxide nanoparticles showed a reversible electrochromic process with a thin film transmission reduction of about 50% in a narrow wavelength range of 400-500 nm, as compared to the bleached state of the film. Using optical transmission measurement, we have found that the band gap energy of the films reduced from 2.7 eV for Cu2O to 1.3 eV for CuO by increasing the annealing temperature from 220 to 300 °C in an N2 environment for 1 h. Study of the band...

    Abstract
Plastic packaging is causing a serious environmental concern owing to its difficulty in degrading and micro-particulates' emissions. Developing biodegradable films has gained research attention to overcome ecological and health issues associated with plastic based packaging. One alternative substitute for petroleum-based plastic is nanocellulose based films, having distinguishing characteristics such as biodegradability, renewability, and non-toxicity. Nanocellulose is classified into three major types, i.e., cellulose nanofibril, cellulose nanocrystals, and bacterial nanocellulose. However, the scope of this review is limited to cellulose nanofibril (CNF) because this is the only one of...
