Discrimination of Malignant Melanoma by Light-Tissue Interaction Model and Optical Properties Extraction using Optical Coherence Tomography”

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Turani, Zahra (Author) ; Fatemizadeh, Emadeddin (Supervisor) ; Nasiri Avanaki, Mohammad Reza (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
The current gold standard for clinical diagnosis of melanoma is excisional biopsy and histopathologic analysis. Approximately 15–30 benign lesions are biopsied to diagnose each melanoma. In addition, biopsies are invasive and result in pain, anxiety, scarring, and disfigurement of patients, which can add additional burden to the health care system. Among several imaging techniques developed to enhance melanoma diagnosis, optical coherence tomography (OCT), with its highresolution and intermediate penetration depth, can potentially provide required diagnostic information noninvasively.
an image analysis algorithm, "optical radiomic melanoma detection (ORMD)" has been presented which...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alaghmand Fard, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Madah Hosseini, Hamid Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, a facile, two-step synthesis was reported for 34-LCysteine- nanocomposites. The first step comprises the preparation of LCysteine functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) core-shell structures via co-precipitation method. In the second step, graphene quantum dots (GQDs), which were synthesized by citric acid carbonization, added to the functionalized MNPs and finally refluxed at the appropriate time and temperature. LCysteine as a biocompatible, natural amino acid were used to link MNPs with GQDs. This nanocomposite was characterized by various techniques. XRD and FT-IR were used to investigate the formation of MNPs and LCysteine existence on the MNPs surface. XPS...

Investigation and Fabrication of Cr2O3 Thin Film Coating on Soda Lime and Low Carbon Steel Substrate

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sarhadi, Neda (Author) ; Dolati, Abolghasem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Chromium oxide coatings (Cr2O3) have been widely used due to their remarkable properties in corrosion, wear, optical and mechanical applications. So far, several methods have been used to prepare Cr2O3 thin films. In this study, the chromium oxide was produced by the sol-gel method and dip coated on the low carbon steel and glass substrates. In this context, we encountered with the problem of incoherency of the Cr2O3 ceramic coating to the steel substrates. It is highly likely that this problem be due to causes such as: a) thermal stresses due to the difference between the thermal expansion coefficients of the substrate and the coating, b) incoherent substrate/coating interface due to their...

    , Article Materials Chemistry and Physics ; Volume 118, Issue 1 , 2009 , Pages 6-8 ; 02540584 (ISSN) Ashkarran, A. A ; Iraji zad, A ; Mahdavi, M ; Ahadian, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
We produced ZnO nanoparticles by high current electrical arc discharge of zinc electrodes in deionized (DI) water. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows formation of crystalline ZnO phase with hexagonal structure and 14 nm single crystalline domain size. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) result indicates that at 5 A arc current, the size of the particles is about 100 nm and increases by increasing the arc current. Absorption spectroscopy of the samples obtained at different arc currents shows an absorption edge on 370 nm which has a red shift by increasing the arc current. Band gap of the produced ZnO nanoparticles at 5 A arc current corresponds to 3.8 eV which decreases to 3.3 eV by...

    Abstract
Water treatment is a process used to eliminate or reduce chemical and biological contaminants that are potentially harmful to the water supply for human use. Stimuli-responsive polymers are a new category of smart materials used in water treatment via a stimuli-induced purification process and subsequent regeneration of the polymers. Stimuli-responsive polymers dynamically change their physico-chemical properties upon environmental changes. They can undergo shrinkage or expansion, alter their optical properties, and change their electrical characteristics depending on the applied stimuli. In this context, various stimuli-responsive polymer systems such as self-assembled nanostructures,...

    Abstract
The optical polarization properties of virus-infected cells have been measured, analyzed, and compared with the uninfected cells. In this regard, Vero and HeLa cells have been used as the host for Herpes simplex viruses (HSV). By using polarization microscopy imaging technique, the Mueller matrix images of infected and uninfected cells have been recorded. Through image processing and further analysis, the polarization properties of host cells are compared with their infected ones. For quantitative analysis, the multispectral Mueller matrix transformation (MMT) parameters (A and b) are calculated to identify the microstructural differentiations between uninfected and infected cells by HSV....

    Abstract
In this paper a method for detecting out of vocabulary words in isolated word recognizers is introduced, our method utilized new kinds of confidence measure. After recognition task was completed and consequently confidence measure was extracted, a classifier would accept or reject result of recognition task using this CM. We used two different kinds of confidence measure where for extracting each one a different information source was used. Amount of competition between hypotheses through the recognition task was used for extracting first CM. The second one was extracted using information about manner of distribution of feature vectors in the states of winner HMM model. Both of these CMs...

Understanding EROS2 observations toward the spiral arms within a classical Galactic model framework

    Abstract
Aims. EROS (Expérience de Recherche d'Objets Sombres) has searched for microlensing toward four directions in the Galactic plane away from the Galactic center. The interpretation of the catalog optical depth is complicated by the spread of the source distance distribution. We compare the EROS microlensing observations with Galactic models (including the Besançon model), tuned to fit the EROS source catalogs, and take into account all observational data such as the microlensing optical depth, the Einstein crossing durations, and the color and magnitude distributions of the catalogued stars. Methods. We simulated EROS-like source catalogs using the HIgh-Precision PARallax COllecting Satellite...

    Abstract
Polymer films possess excellent optical properties, such as high transparency, and thermal characteristics, like low heat conductivity, as well as further polymer specific advantages. Consequently, polymer films have an outstanding potential for many solar applications. They are already used for encapsulation of photovoltaic (PV) cells, as convection barrier in solar collectors and as substrate or adhesive layers for glazing. In translucent polymers, energy can be transferred internally by radiation in addition to conduction. Since radiant propagation is very rapid, it can provide energy within the layer more quickly than diffusion by heat conduction. Thus, the transient thermal response of...

Considering with structure and surface roughness, two different growth modes as a function of spray time were determined: lateral and vertical modes which were illustrated schematically. Optical properties including photoluminescence, transmission, optical band gap and refractive index as a function of film's thickness and structure were studied. It was observed that the average transmittance is more than 80% in...

    , Article International Journal of Nanomanufacturing ; Volume 5, Issue 3-4 , 2010 , Pages 232-244 ; 17469392 (ISSN) Shayegan, M ; Bagheri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of both rubbery phase and nanosilica on mechanical properties of epoxy. Three series of formulations based on epoxy including nanosilica, rubber and rubber/nanosilica were prepared. Transmission electron microscopy showed that nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed throughout the epoxy matrix. Compression and fracture toughness tests along with scanning electron microscopy and transmission optical microscopy were also done to evaluate the properties of the compounds. Although the results of compression tests indicate that addition of nanosilica could not change elastic modulus and yield strength of neat resin significantly,...
