    , Article International Journal of Engineering, Transactions B: Applications ; Volume 23, Issue 3-4 , 2010 , Pages 223-232 ; 1728-144X (ISSN) Mohajerani, A ; Farrahi, G. H ; Sharif University of Technology
Materials and Energy Research Center  2010
    Abstract
The growth of slant cracks by fretting fatigue of a half plane in contact with a flat rounded pad was studied. The mode I and mode II stress intensity factors for cracks of various lengths and directions were calculated using the semi-analytical method of the distribution of dislocations, and their cumulative effect on the crack growth was investigated using the strain energy density criterion. The results showed dominance of mode I fracture on crack growth, and based on the observation of strain energy density factor versus crack orientation, the results also suggest that depending on the crack length, the most critical orientations of cracks are at 0° to 20° outward the contact zone. Good...

Numerical investigation of the effects of geometric and seismic parameters on liquefaction-induced lateral spreading

    , Article Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering ; Volume 89 , 2016 , Pages 233-247 ; 02677261 (ISSN) Ghasemi Fare, O ; Pak, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2016
    Abstract
The lateral movement of a liquefiable soil layer on gentle slopes is the most visible and devastating type of liquefaction-induced ground failure. Recent earthquakes have shown that this phenomenon causes severe damages to coastal structures, pier of the bridges and life-lines by exerting large lateral forces on the structures. In this paper coupled dynamic field equations of extended Biot's theory with u-p formulation are used for simulating the phenomenon and the soil behavior is modeled by a critical state two-surface plasticity model for sands. Furthermore, in this study variation of permeability coefficient during liquefaction is taken into account. The permeability coefficient is...

Experimental and numerical investigation of low-temperature performance of modified asphalt binders and mixtures

    , Article Road Materials and Pavement Design ; 2016 , Pages 1-22 ; 14680629 (ISSN) Jahanbakhsh, H ; Karimi, M. M ; Tabatabaee, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Taylor and Francis Ltd  2016
    Abstract
Thermal cracking is the prevalent type of distress experienced by asphalt pavements in cold regions. It is widely assumed that when thermal stresses induced in the pavement exceed the tensile strength of the asphalt surface layer, cracking occurs; however, the role of thermal fatigue should not be ignored. To better describe the low-temperature (LT) performance properties of modified asphalt binders, a new parameter, normalised tensile stress (NTS), was defined in this research. NTS values were compared with bending beam rheometer (BBR), direct tension (DT) and semi-circular bending (SCB) fracture test results. The m-value parameter of the BBR test specifies the type of asphalt binder. This...

    Abstract
In this work, numerical investigation of a gas turbine model combustor (GTMC) was carried out using two different turbulence-chemistry interaction models: the EDC (eddy dissipation concept) and TPDF (transported probability density function). GTMC with good optical access for laser measurements provides a useful database for swirling CH4/Air diffusion flames at atmospheric pressure. Modeling was performed by solving Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and Reynolds stress model (RSM) equations for a two-dimensional (2D) axisymmetric computational domain accompanied by swirl and the combustion chamber was investigated for both reacting and nonreacting conditions. A detailed reduced...

    Abstract
Recently, the mechanisms of natural undulatory locomotion of aquatic animal swimming have become one of the most significant issues for the researchers, swimmers and engineers. This study aims to elucidate and compare the propulsive vortical signature and performance of backward (negative undulation) and forward (positive undulation) travelling waves through a typical fishlike propulsor by a systematic numerical study. The numerical approach uses a pressure-based finite volume method solver to solve Navier–Stokes equations in an arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian framework domain containing a two-dimensional NACA 0012 foil moving with prescribed kinematics. Some of the important findings are: (1)...

    , Article Proceedings of the ASME Summer Heat Transfer Conference 2009, HT2009 ; Volume 3 , 2009 , Pages 115-123 ; 9780791843581 (ISBN) Irani R, A ; Saediamiri, M ; Saidi, M. S ; Saidi, M. H ; Shafii, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a one-dimensional numerical approach is used to study the effect of various parameters such as micro combustor diameter, mass flow rate and external convection heat transfer coefficient on the temperature and species mass fraction profiles. A premixed mixture of H2-Air with a multi-step chemistry (9 species and 19 reactions) is used and thermal conductivity of the mixture is considered as a function of species thermal conductivity and temperature by using a set of new relations. The transient gas phase energy and species conservation equations result in an Advection-Diffusion-Reaction system (A-D-R) that leads to two stiff systems of PDEs, which can not be solved by...

Application of the adjoint optimisation of shock control bump for ONERA-M6 wing

    , Article European Journal of Computational Mechanics ; Volume 26, Issue 5-6 , 2017 , Pages 557-583 ; 17797179 (ISSN) Nejati, A ; Mazaheri, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This article is devoted to the numerical investigation of the shock wave/boundary layer interaction (SWBLI) as the main factor influencing the aerodynamic performance of transonic bumped airfoils and wings. The numerical analysis is conducted for the ONERA-M6 wing through a shock control bump (SCB) shape optimisation process using the adjoint optimisation method. SWBLI is analyzed for both clean and bumped airfoils and wings, and it is shown how the modified wave structure originating from upstream of the SCB reduces the wave drag, by improving the boundary layer velocity profile downstream of the shock wave. The numerical simulation of the turbulent viscous flow and a gradient-based adjoint...

Influence of channel shape on wave-generated parameters by a pressure source in shallow water

    , Article Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Engineering ; Volume 143, Issue 5 , 2017 ; 0733950X (ISSN) Javanmardi, M ; Binns, J ; Renilson, M ; Thomas, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The present work is a numerical investigation into the waves generated by a pressure source moving in straight channels with a nonrectangular cross-channel depth profile. Wave fields generated by the moving pressure source are described, and the effects of channel bathymetry on the generated wave characteristics of wave height, wave-breaking location, wave-breaking type and intensity, and peel angle are presented. Four different channel cross-section shapes were investigated, and the results were analyzed. It was concluded that the maximum wave height depended primarily on pressure-source parameters and that the investigated channel shapes did not have a significant effect on the maximum...

    , Article Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering ; Volume 95, Issue 6 , 2017 , Pages 1213-1223 ; 00084034 (ISSN) Maaref, S ; Rokhforouz, M. R ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Wiley-Liss Inc  2017
    Abstract
The aim of the present work is to assess the effects of wettability, heterogeneity, and viscosity differences on water-oil displacement process in micromodel porous media through numerical modelling. The two-phase flow was simulated by Cahn-Hilliard phase field method (PFM) using a finite element package. The micromodel was initially saturated with oil (wetting phase) and oil was produced through invasion of the displacing phase into the matrix. The computed oil and water saturations were in good agreement with those obtained by the visual flooding experiment. Using the validated model, sensitivity analysis was performed to investigate the effects of different wettability states,...

SPH numerical simulation of tsunami wave forces impinged on bridge superstructures

    , Article Coastal Engineering ; Volume 121 , 2017 , Pages 145-157 ; 03783839 (ISSN) Sarfaraz, M ; Pak, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2017
    Abstract
This paper addresses numerically-derived tsunami wave loads on bridge superstructures using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), which is a type of mesh-free methods. Although there exist some relationships for the case of impinged loads on bridges exerted by regular (sinusoidal) waves, for the case of solitary waves such as tsunamis, no relation has yet been proposed in the literature. This shortcoming is partly due to the lack of understanding the mechanism of wave action on the bridge superstructures. In this study, three water depths, three wave amplitudes and four submergence depths of the deck are considered for the process of numerical investigation of tsunami-induced loads on...

In addition, the simulation results for the bubble fraction and axial velocity of gas bubbles were compared with experimental data reported in the literature and good agreement was observed. As the apex angle was increased, the fraction of gas bubbles with large sizes increased and the fraction of bubbles with small sizes decreased. As the particle size...

Numerical investigation of effects of uniform magnetic field on heat transfer around a sphere

    , Article International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer ; Volume 114 , 2017 , Pages 703-714 ; 00179310 (ISSN) Abbasi, Z ; Molaei Dehkordi, A ; Abbasi, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2017
    Abstract
In this article, ferrohydrodynamic forced-convection heat transfer from a heated sphere embedded in a ferrofluid in the presence of the uniform external magnetic field has been studied numerically for the first time over a wide range of Reynolds number value, nanoparticle diameter, particle volume fraction, and magnetic field intensity. Despite the uniform external magnetic field applied, the internal magnetic field near the sphere could be nonuniform due to the considerable difference between the relative magnetic permeability of the sphere and the surrounding medium. Kelvin body force arises from this nonuniformity and induces vortexes near the sphere. These vortexes disturb the boundary...

Experimental and numerical investigation of the center-cracked horseshoe disk method for determining the mode I fracture toughness of rock-like material

    , Article Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering ; Volume 51, Issue 1 , 2018 , Pages 173-185 ; 07232632 (ISSN) Haeri, H ; Sarfarazi, V ; Yazdani, M ; Bagher Shemirani, A ; Hedayat, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper presents a new procedure for determining the fracture toughness of rock-like specimens using the diametric compression test with the center-cracked horseshoe disk (CCHD) method. Using finite element analysis, a dimensionless stress intensity factor was obtained and a formula was rendered for determining mode I fracture toughness. To evaluate the accuracy of the measurement results produced by the CCHD method, fracture toughness experiments were conducted on the same rock-like material using the notched Brazilian disk (NBD) method. The CCHD tests were simulated using a two-dimensional particle flow code for validation of the experimental results, and a great agreement between the...

Numerical investigation of the stability of armour units in low-crested breakwaters using combined SPH–Polyhedral DEM method

    , Article Journal of Fluids and Structures ; Volume 81 , 2018 , Pages 14-35 ; 08899746 (ISSN) Sarfaraz, M ; Pak, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Academic Press  2018
    Abstract
Low-crested breakwaters have become more attractive because they do not hinder the beautiful coastal landscape and are more environmentally friendly comparing to traditional breakwaters. The available formulae for design of these types of structures mainly focus on wave transmission, reflection and dissipation aspects. However, stability of the armour blocks are not directly taken into account in the design process. In this study the Lagrangian meshfree method of SPH along with a discrete element method i.e. Polyhedral DEM are used to simulate the interaction between the sea water waves with different characteristics and low-crested breakwaters constructed using cubic armour blocks. SPH is...

    Abstract
This study investigates GH2/LOX coaxial jet flame at trans- and supercritical conditions using the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes approach. Four two-equation-turbulence models, three real equation of states, two chemical mechanisms, and three different chamber pressures are examined. Predictions show good agreement with measurements qualitatively and quantitatively. Based on the results, the predictions of the Soave-Redlich-Kwong equation of state (EOS) are closer to the experiment, while the Aungier-Redlich-Kwong EOS has more deviation than the others. Moreover, the k-ω shear stress transport model has better performance than the other turbulence models. It is also found that the flow...
