    Abstract
Due to the increasing need for drinking water in the world, various membrane processes have been developing significantly over the past several years. The process of membrane distillation is one of the non-isothermal processes that cause steam to pass from the membrane due to the difference in temperature and the resulting difference in vapor pressure. Due to the lack of precision in the amount of flux and thermal efficiency in various operating conditions the membrane distillation process still needs development. This article attempted to examine the effects of flowrate, temperature, and module length on the performance of the membrane distillation process using computational fluid dynamics...

    Abstract
In this article, a new soft switching isolated push-pull dc-dc converter using a three-winding transformer is proposed. The proposed hybrid resonant and pulse width modulated converter employs a conventional push-pull structure in the primary side, a voltage doubler in the secondary side, and a bidirectional switch besides the transformer, altogether help offering a high efficiency over a wide range of input and output voltage signals with an unsophisticated fixed-frequency control mechanism. The primary-side switches are commutated under zero voltage switching with low switching current and the secondary-side diodes are commutated under zero current switching. In this article, we first...

    Abstract
This article offers a holistic model and approach on reliability assessment of conventional isolated multiswitch pulsewidth modulation dc-dc (IMSDC-DC) power electronic converters with conventional half-bridge, full-bridge, and push-pull dc-dc topologies. The proposed reliability assessment analytics encapsulate correlated effects of several conditions (e.g., open- and short-circuit faults) and prevailing parameters (e.g., duty cycle, input voltage, output power, transformer turns ratio, voltage gain, switching frequency, operation time duration, and components characteristics) on the overall reliability performance of IMSDC-DC converters. Such insights are then harnessed within a Markov...

Optical isolation enabled by two time-modulated point perturbations in a ring resonator

    Abstract
In this paper we achieve non-reciprocity in a silicon optical ring resonator, by introducing two small time-modulated perturbations into the ring. Isolators are designed using this time-perturbed ring, side-coupled to waveguides. The underlying operation of the time-modulated ring and isolator is analyzed using Temporal Coupled Mode Theory (TCMT). The TCMT is used to find the angular distance, phase difference and thickness of the two time-modulated points on the ring resonator and also to find and justify the optimum values for the modulation frequency and amplitude, which yields maximum isolation in the isolator arrangements. Insight into the major players that determine isolation are also...

    Abstract
The macro-scale molecular communication (MC) recently received considerable attention because of its potential applications. Since most of the experimental research in MC focuses on the micro-scale cases, it is necessary to study and implement experiments to investigate the concept’s feasibility as well as to validate the models and parameters. In this paper, a macro-scale flow-based MC platform with fluidic medium is developed, in a semi-cylindrical channel with laminar flow condition. The transmission medium we consider is water in the plexi pipe, a transmitter releases Hydrochloric acid molecules into this pipe and a chemical sensor is used as the receiver. We propose an LTI model for the...

    Abstract
In this study, a new isolated high-gain switched-boost DC/DC converter employing two symmetrical switched-boost networks along with a modified control algorithm based on the combination of the pulse-width modulation (PWM) and phase-shift modulation is proposed. Utilising symmetrical switched-boost networks increase the voltage gain of the proposed converter, significantly. Moreover, applying the proposed switching algorithm on the proposed isolated switched-boost DC/DC converter leads to the following advantages: (i) high-voltage gain, (ii) zero voltage switching (ZVS) turn-on of two switches, (iii) ZVS turnoff of two switches and (iv) appearing three controllable parameters (the...

    Abstract
The nature of molecular transmitter imposes some limitations on the molecule production process and its storage. As the molecules act the role of the information carriers, the limitations affect the transmission process and the system performance considerably. In this paper, we focus on the transmitter's limitations, in particular, the limited molecule production rate and the finite storage capacity. We consider a time-slotted communication where the transmitter opens its outlets and releases the stored molecules for a specific time duration to send bit '1' and remains silent to send bit '0'. By changing the Release Duration (RD), we propose an adaptive RD modulation. The objective is to...

Pluronic as a biocompatible thermo-sensitive polymer is frequently used as a self-emulsifying drug delivery system. Magnetite nanoparticles with double layer coating of oleic acid and pluronic F127 have been reported as an on-demand smart carrier for hydrophobic drugs. LCST was examined using differential scanning calorimetry...

A novel design of hybrid-time-interleaved current steering digital to analog converter and its behavioral simulation considering non-ideal effects

    , Article Integration ; Volume 69 , 2019 , Pages 321-334 ; 01679260 (ISSN) Sariri, H ; Torkzadeh, P ; Sadughi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2019
    Abstract
This work presents a behavioral model for non-ideal effects in a novel Hybrid time-interleaved digital to analog converter (TIDAC). In Hybrid DACs, both ΔΣ and Nyquist structures are used. In this work, in the Nyquist path, the 2-time-interleaving technique is used and in the ΔΣ path, a new structure is proposed to reduce the critical path in the TI delta-sigma modulator (DSM). In conventional TIDSM, adding each channel to the structure leads to increasing the critical path as one full-adder. This, in turn, decreases the speed of modulator since a single feedback loop is utilized to compute the running sum of the input signals. In this work, a new type of poly-phase decomposition is...

    Abstract
Identification of modulation and space-time block code (STBC) is an important task of receivers in applications such as military, civilian, and commercial communications. Here, we consider multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We propose two methods for STBC identification when the modulation is known. We also introduce a method for joint identification of code and modulation. Additionally, we present an enhanced zero-forcing (ZF) equaliser to improve the separation between the features of different classes. Higher order cumulants are used as the statistical features. In the first method of STBC identification, after the proposed equalisation, received data samples are segmented,...

    , Article IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters ; Volume 18, Issue 10 , 2019 , Pages 2086-2089 ; 15361225 (ISSN) Mazaheri, M. H ; Fakharzadeh, M ; Akbari, M ; Safavi Naeini, S ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2019
    Abstract
In this letter, we use G/T as a figure of merit to evaluate the performance of time-modulated arrays (TMA). The noise performance of a receiver, which is periodically switched on and off, is quite different from that of a conventional receiver. We analytically investigate the noise performance of a TMA. Based on this analysis, the figure of merit, G/T, of the TMA structure is investigated, including the details of the receiver hardware. Moreover, the G/T of the TMA is compared with that of a phased array. The comparison indicates that the TMA structure provides the same or even better performance compared to a phased array system, which demonstrates the capability of TMA in providing...

    Abstract
As the emergence of Internet of Things (IoT) brings the realization of ubiquitous connectivity ever closer, our reliance on these applications gets more important. Nowadays, such connected devices could be found everywhere, from home appliances to industrial control systems and environmental monitoring applications. One of the main challenges in IoT infrastructures is that of reliability, which emboldens itself in the context of Low-power and Lossy Networks (LLN) as they are inherently prone to packet loss as a result of their environmental and design constraints. Therefore, reliability of IoT devices becomes crucially important. With communication, the most important consideration in these...

    Abstract
In this paper, an optimized topology for switched-capacitor (SC) multilevel inverter is proposed. The proposed topology, which is referred to as Optimized Switched-Capacitor Multilevel Inverter (OSC-MI), offers a boosted staircase voltage by using only one dc source and fewer switches count. Since each industrial load requires a specific power factor (PF), an optimal converter can be designated in a way that it both satisfies the required PF and employs fewer switches and gate drivers. Therefore, the main strategy of reducing switches count in the proposed topology is to design the converter according to the required PF value. In this paper, the theoretical analytics and comparison results...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Systems ; Volume 34, Issue 4 , 2019 , Pages 2744-2754 ; 08858950 (ISSN) Setareh, M ; Parniani, M ; Aminifar, F ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2019
    Abstract
Online monitoring of inter-area oscillations is a vital need for secure operation of large-scale power systems. This paper aims at online estimation of inter-area modes by a novel stabilized fast transversal recursive least squares (SFTRLS) filter running on ambient power system data received from phasor measurement units. The SFTRLS filter is a fast finite-impulse response adaptive filter that is widely used in communication applications, such as noise and echo cancelation. It has the lowest computational complexity among least-squares filters and directly calculates coefficients of the parametric model selected for identifying a system under study. In the proposed method, the SFTRLS filter...

    Abstract
In this paper we investigate the active impedance of Time Modulated Array (TMA) as a low-cost and simple beamforming architecture. Since the antenna elements in TMA are periodically turned on and off, the active impedance of this structure has less variation compared to a phased array architecture. In this paper, we have compared the active impedance of a TMA structure and that of the phased array for different cases. The active reflection coefficient of the TMA is always below-10 dB, while the impedance of the phased array becomes unmatched for certain scan angles

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics ; Volume 34, Issue 6 , 2019 , Pages 5439-5450 ; 08858993 (ISSN) Noroozi, N ; Yaghoubi, M ; Zolghadri, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2019
    Abstract
The leakage current originated from the fluctuations of the common-mode voltage (CMV) is an issue in a transformerless grid-connected photovoltaic system. In this paper, a modified space vector modulation based on the Fourier transform analysis is proposed to reduce the leakage current in a three-phase quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI). The CMV harmonic content in a qZSI contains low-and high-frequency harmonics that cause safety and electromagnetic interference problems, respectively. By implementing the proposed modulation in a three-phase qZSI, the low-frequency harmonics of the CMV are mainly reduced. The distribution of the high-frequency harmonics is also modified in a way they can be...

    Abstract
The modulation transfer function (MTF) is well known as a crucial parameter in quality assurance of computed tomography (CT) scanners, which provides detailed information of both contrast and resolution of CT images. Different methods have been introduced and developed to calculate the MTF of CT scanners. However, a robust methodology which accurately estimates the MTF of CT scanners under the use of every range of object electron density and tube current-time product (mAs) has not been reported so far. To this aim, a new wavelet-based circular edge method for MTF measurement has been presented in this work. Owning to the edge spread function (ESF) susceptibility to noise, the approach was...

    Abstract
We develop a concept for a waveguide that exploits spatial control of nonlinear surface-polaritonic waves. Our scheme includes an optical cavity with four-level N-type atoms in a lossless dielectric placed above a negative-index metamaterial layer. We propose exciting a polaritonic Akhmediev breather at a certain position of the interface between the atomic medium and the metamaterial by modifying laser-field intensities and detunings. Furthermore, we propose generating position-dependent polaritonic frequency combs by engineering widths of the electromagnetically induced transparency window commensurate with the surface-polaritonic modulation instability. Therefore, this waveguide acts as a...
