    Blind source separation of discrete finite alphabet sources using a single mixture

    Abstract
    This paper deals with blind separation of finite alphabet sources where we have n sources and only one observation. The method is applied directly in time (spatial) domain and no transformation is needed. It follows a two stage procedure. In the first stage the mixing coefficients are estimated, and in the second stage the sources are separated using the estimated mixing coefficients. We also study restrictions of this method and conditions for which its performance is acceptable. Simulation results are presented to show the ability of this method to source separation in images and pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) signals

    Abstract
    Pulse Repetition Interval (PRI) Modulation Detection is an important subsystem of a typical electronic warfare support system. In this paper, a robust, fast, and well designed structure for detection of simple and complex PRI modulations based on statistical and sequential analysis of Pulse Repetition Interval (PRI) is proposed.     Abstract
    A novel substrateless power amplifier module realized by ridge gap waveguide (RGW) technology is proposed in Ka-band. Up to our knowledge, this is the first time that an active device is directly integrated with an RGW structure. No substrate is used in the RF section of the implemented power amplifier and the whole structure is made by machining a piece of metal. The amplifier was made of two pieces and was easily assembled without needing a precise contact between the two sections. The cavity resonance of the amplifier is suppressed using a pining structure. The fabricated amplifier module is self-packaged and does not need any packaging. It is shown that the simulated and measured results...

    Abstract
    In this paper we study slotted ALOHA random access optical code division multiple access packet-switching networks with a chip-level receiver structure. We use generalized optical orthogonal codes (GOOCs) and the overlapping pulse position modulation (OPPM) signaling technique to improve system performance. The impact of physical layer parameters such as the GOOC cross-correlation value and the OPPM overlapping index on key performance benchmarks such as network throughput and delay are analyzed.     Abstract
    In this paper, we investigate the implementation of wavelet modulation (WM) in a digital communication system and propose novel methods to improve its performance. We will put particular focus on the structure of an optimal detector in AWGN channels and address two main methods for inserting the samples of the message signal in different frequency layers.     Abstract
    In this paper we achieve non-reciprocity in a silicon optical ring resonator, by introducing two small time-modulated perturbations into the ring. Isolators are designed using this time-perturbed ring, side-coupled to waveguides. The underlying operation of the time-modulated ring and isolator is analyzed using Temporal Coupled Mode Theory (TCMT). The TCMT is used to find the angular distance, phase difference and thickness of the two time-modulated points on the ring resonator and also to find and justify the optimum values for the modulation frequency and amplitude, which yields maximum isolation in the isolator arrangements.     Abstract
    A new technique for coding and decoding of optical signals through the use of polarization is described. In this technique the concept of coding is translated to polarization. In other words, coding is done in such a way that each code represents a unique polarization. This is done by implementing a binary pattern on a spatial light modulator in such a way that the reflected light has the required polarization. Decoding is done by the detection of the received beam's polarization.     Abstract
    In this paper, a two channel abdominal PPG instrumentation is developed. The proposed instrument consists of IR-LED and its driver, photo-detector and data acquisition card. The modulation frequency generation, demodulation and digital signal processing is done completely in the digital domain using LabView. The results show that the developed instrument is able to acquire signal from the abdomen even at 4 cm source to detector separation. This instrument is intended for future application in trans-abdominal fetal heart rate detection. © 2008 Springer-Verlag  

    Design and performance of a plastic optical fiber leakage sensor

    Abstract
    In this article design and operation of a plastic optical fiber (POF) sensor based on the unconventional light leakage from one fiber to another one causing intensity modulation are presented. The dominant loss mechanism was found to be the evanescent loss and based on this phenomenon the optical fiber sensor was designed. The penetration depth of evanescent wave as a function of different refractive index of cladding was calculated. Operation of this sensor was tested as a liquid level sensor for different liquids and the experimental results are compared. Two distinct mechanisms are considered for the optical power loss and the sensor operation is explained in terms of these effects.     This paper is devoted to the analysis of nonlinear behavior of amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM) modes of atomic force microscopy. For this, the microcantilever (which forms the basis for the operation of AFM) is modeled as a single mode approximation and the interaction between the sample and cantilever is derived from a van der Waals potential.     Abstract
    We present an analytical thermal model to explain the crosstalk in YBCO edge-transition bolometer arrays. The verification of the model was tested on sample array devices made of 200 and 400 nm YBCO films on LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 substrates. The model presented was able to explain the effects of the various physical parameters of the devices, such as the film thickness, operating temperature, and the device separation, which cause different response behaviours based on the variation of the related thermal crosstalk characteristics.     Abstract
    A novel decoding technique for DFT-based error control codes that is robust against quantisation noise and additive white Gaussian noise is proposed. The algorithm simultaneously determines the number and the positions of the corrupted samples. In contrast to the conventional decoding technique, the proposed decoding method is stable in the presence of both quantisation noise and additive white Gaussian noise. © IEE, 2005

    Abstract
    In the classical DTC scheme, due to the limited number of the VSI voltage vectors, large and small errors can not be distinguished. In fact, the switching vectors chosen for large errors are the same as those chosen for small errors. In this paper, in order to overcome this problem, after considering the primary ideas of the DSVM-DTC technique, a new approach for the realization of the DSVM-DTC methodology of the induction machine is proposed. The proposed method, along with its simplicity, has an improved performance in terms of the torque and the current ripple and can be easily extended.     Abstract
    Recently, a group of novel devices based on conducting interfaces is proposed. These conducting interfaces can be implemented by using the inversion layer of MOS structures, trapped charges or depletion layer charges. It has been shown that these structures can support surface electromagnetic waves. In this paper, the coupling of surface electromagnetic waves supported by conducting interfaces is analyzed and an analytical formula is driven by using the coupled mode theory.     In the present work, numerical simulation of cross-flow microfiltration of non-alcoholic beer in a tubular membrane has been studied. Finite element analysis was used as a powerful tool for simulation. The feed stream, which flows mainly tangentially to the porous membrane surface, is modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations.     This thesis studies on diffusion-based molecular communication channel between two nano-machines. The effect of the amount of memory on performance is characterized, and a simple memory-limited decoder is proposed and its performance is shown to be close to that of the best possible decoder (without any restrictions on the computational complexity or its functional form), using Genie-aided upper bounds.     This article examines the Weibull statistical analysis that was used for investigating the effect of melt filtration on tensile properties and defects formed inside the casting. Forming and entrapping of double oxide films have been explained by using the context of critical velocity of melt in the runner. SutCast software results were used to examine the amounts of the velocity of melt as such. SEM/EDX analysis is used to observe the presence of double oxide films in the fracture surfaces of the tensile specimens.
