    Abstract
Previous studies have shown that a small variation in the chemical composition of metallic glasses (MGs) can drastically alter their strength and ductility. However, the underlying structural origin and atomistic mechanisms remain unclear. Using large-scale molecular dynamics simulations, we studied the effect of chemical composition and affinity on the microstructure and deformation behaviour of Zr50Ni50 − xAlx MG by varying the value of x in the range of 5 ≤ x ≤ 25 (at.%). We show that an increase in x is able to strengthen and embrittle the material. In particular, a ductile (homogeneous deformation) to brittle (shear banding) transition occurs at x ~ 15. To reveal the structural origin,...

    Abstract
Execution speed seriously bothers application developers and users for wearable devices such as Google Glass. Intensive applications like 3D games suffer from significant delays when CPU is busy. Energy is another concern when the devices are in low battery level but users need them for urgency use. To ease such pains, one approach is to expand the computational power by cloud offloading. This paradigm works well when the available Internet access has enough bandwidth. Another way is to leverage nearby devices for computation-offloading, which is known as device-to-device (D2D) offloading. In this paper, we present Dandelion, a unified code offloading system for wearable computing. Dandelion...

    Abstract
A new method for fabrication of silver nano-islands on glass fibers using a top-down process is introduced. A thin layer of silver chemically coated on the surface of the glass fibers evolves into silver islands by heat treatment. The effect of the concentration of the initial solution and the temperature were investigated. Segregation was more clearly observed for lower solution concentrations and higher temperatures. The temperature of 500 °C was found optimum where separated islands form. At higher temperatures, the coagulation and burial of silver islands occur. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and diffused reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) were...

    Abstract
Toughness improvement of an epoxy resin and respective hoop wound composite were investigated systematically using amine-terminated butadiene acrylonitrile (ATBN) liquid rubber. Rubber modification improves fracture toughness of epoxy resin with slight reduction in the glass transition temperature (Tg), flexural and compressive properties of resin. Impact resistance of composite is improved by rubber modification similar to modified resin. Interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), compressive modulus and strength, and flexural strength of composite decreased slightly with rubber modification. To interpret the data, the void content of composite samples was determined and the damaged surfaces of...

A new insight into pore body filling mechanism during waterflooding in a glass micro-model

    , Article Chemical Engineering Research and Design ; Volume 151 , 2019 , Pages 100-107 ; 02638762 (ISSN) Rezaei Dehshibi, R ; Sadatshojaie, A ; Mohebbi, A ; Riazi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Institution of Chemical Engineers  2019
    Abstract
By displacing oil in porous media with other fluid, different mechanisms of fluid displacing occur. The importance of understanding the trapping mechanisms like pore body filling is irrefutable. Pore body filling mechanism with a coordination number of four has different events like I0, I1, I2 and I3. Previous studies showed that the event of I0 occurs when the pore is only filled by a compressible non-wetting phase, but this study showed that this event could also occur by an incompressible non-wetting phase. Trapping mechanisms can be examined in a glass micro-model. In this research, a glass micro-model with three different patterns was used. Results showed that at two spots of the...

    Abstract
The structural integrity of the sealant is critical for the reliability of solid oxide cells (SOCs) stacks. In this study, elastic modulus (E), hardness (H) and fracture toughness (KIC) of a rapid crystallizing glass of BaO–CaO–SiO2 system termed “sealant G” are reported as determined using an indentation test method at room temperature. A wide range of indentation loads (1 mN–10 N) was used to investigate the load-dependency of these mechanical properties. Values of 95 ± 12 GPa, 5.8 ± 0.2 GPa and 1.15 ± 0.07 MPa m0.5 were derived for E, H and KIC using the most suitable indentation loads. An application relevant annealing treatment of 500 h at 800 °C does not lead to a significant change of...
