Experimental Investigation on the Behavior of RC Arches Strengthened by GFRP and CFRP Composites

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moradi, Hossein (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The rehabilitation of old structures holds a lot of importance, as many structures with a life span of over 30 years are prone to severe damage and even collapse. To overcome this problem, the use of FRP sheets to strengthen structures is suggested. RC-arches have been used in many structures such as bridges and require specific consideration in terms of strengthening. So far, the influence of the number of FRP layers and location, the height of arch and percentage of reinforcement on strengthened arch behavior have not been investigated. In this research, reinforced concrete arch members strengthened with GFRP and CFRP were investigated. A total of 28 Specimens, including four...

Behavior of Concrete Slabs Reinforced with FRP Bars, Design and Analysis

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Adimi, Alireza (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Despite extensive studies on the behavior of reinforced concrete slabs, especially those reinforced with steel rebars, no comprehensive studies have been conducted on the behavior of concrete slabs reinforced with FRP rebars. Therefore, there are some ambiguities regarding the tensile and compressive behavior of these rebars in the load-bearing capacity of reinforced concrete slabs (depending on their amount in the slab and their combination with steel rebars). Hence, in this study, in order to ensure the accuracy of numerical simulations, the numerical 3D simulation of a one-way concrete slab reinforced with tensile FRP rebars was performed using the finite element Abaqus software....

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Faghihi, Kamyar (Author) ; Khaloo, Ali Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Concrete is the second most structural material in the world. So attention and promotion of the concrete mix design with respect to variable issues and requirements, is very important. On the other hand, these days environment and its pollution has become very popular discussion. Waste-glass which is produced by human products is one of the environmental pollutants. In this thesis it replaces some aggregate in concrete and it can reduce the level of this material in the world. Also we study effects of silica-fume as cement replacement and properties enhancer in our concrete mix design and see how it can ...

Effect of Carbon and Glass FRP Confinement on Compressive Strength of Pre-Damaged Concrete Cylinders

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammadi Firouz, Reza (Author) ; Joghatae, Abdolreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Recent investigations on construction engineering have determined that repairing of Reinforced Concrete (RC) by means of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites is an effective method of retrofitting existing columns. The main research in this thesis focuses on the repair of concrete specimens which are damaged and their initial strength has been reduced. To achieve this purpose, through experimental procedures, the effect of confining damaged concrete cylinders by FRP, has been investigated. The experimental program included three parameters: type of fibers (glass or carbon), type of confining (full or partial), and the number of layers. First concrete cylinders were made and loaded to...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Zarghami, Vahid (Author) ; Ghorbani, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Shokrgozar, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor) ; Pooshang Bagheri, Kamran (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Aseptic loosening and infection are two major problems of bone implants. Aseptic loosening occurs due to poor cell growth and poor adhesion to the implant surface over time. Bone infection at the implant site occurs mainly by the staphylococcus aureus bacteria. In some cases, infection occurs in the short term and in the early times after implantation, and in some cases, infection occurs in later times. The aim of this study is to synthesize and evaluate antibacterial coatings, while having cell growth-promoting components and cell differentiation to solve bone implant problems simultaneously. Also, the issue of bacterial resistance to antibiotics and their risks in bone implants is another...

The size effect of biogactive glass particles (6 μm, 250 nm, <100 nm) and morphology of titania nanostructures (spherical, tube, leaf-like, and flower-like particles) were elaborated. The biogactive glass particles with different sizes were prepared...

Experimental Study of Drying and Calcination of Simulated High-Level Waste (HLW)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farahzadi, Zahra (Author) ; Samadfam, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Zahakifar, Fazel (Supervisor) ; Zaheri, Parisa (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the novel methods of stabilization of nuclear waste is the use of vitrification technology. In order to stabilize high level wastes (HLLW) in glass, it is required that the elements are in their oxide form. Therefore, it is necessary to evaporate the waste and turn it into a solid form so that the elements can be converted into oxide form in the calcination furnace. Hence, one of the challenges of stabilization is the optimization of evaporation and calcination conditions. In this research, the parameters affecting evaporation were first investigated. Using laboratory measurements of application: temperature (110 to 180 °C), presence of nitric acid (0.5 to 4 mol/L), ratio of zirconium...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khatirian, Mahdi (Author) ; Samadfam, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Sepehrian, Hamid (Supervisor) ; Yadollahi, Ali (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Considering the operation of the current nuclear reactors and the country's policy to achieve 10,000 megawatts of nuclear power in the horizon of 1420, in the coming years we will face a huge amount of radioactive waste, the majority of which is waste with low and intermediate levels of radioactivity (LILW). A large percentage of the radioactive waste production in Bushehr power plant is concentrated waste with a low and intermediate level of radioactivity (about 70% by volume). Due to the commisining of phase 2 and 3 of Bushehr power plant in the coming years and the increase in the radioactive waste production, proper planning should be done for waste management in order to reduce the...

    Abstract
Considering the operation of the current nuclear reactors and the country's policy to achieve 10,000 megawatts of nuclear power in the horizon of 1420, as well as the construction of research reactors, we will face a huge amount of radioactive waste in the coming years. Meanwhile, spent ion exchange resins constitute a large amount of low and intermediate level (LILW) solid radioactive waste produced from the nuclear industry. Therefore, appropriate precautionary measures should be taken for the immobilization and disposal of these radioactive wastes in order to ensure the sustainable development of the nuclear industry and the protection of the environment and human health. In this study,...

Study on Chemical Durability of Vitrified High Level Waste in Borosilicate Glass Matrix

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tabatabaee Moradi, Haniyeh (Author) ; Samadfam, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Sepehrian, Hamid (Supervisor) ; Yadollahi, Ali (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
As nuclear energy continues to be used as a useful energy resource, waste management, especially management of high-level nuclear waste (HLW), will always be a major concern, as the future generations should not be deprived of the valuable benefits of this energy. Vitrification of liquid high-level radioactive waste (HLW) has received greater attention, worldwide, than any other high-level waste solidification process. The high solubility of HLW in borosilicate glass, the controllable temperature of this type of glass and its low leaching rate in repository environment, have introduced borosilicate glass as a suitable host for HLW immobilization. In this project, the immobilization of the...

    Efficient Offloading in Ambient Cloud

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Golkarifard, Morteza (Author) ; Movaghar Rahimabadi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Execution speed seriously bothers application developers and users for wearable devices such as Google Glass. Intensive applications like Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) suffer from significant delays when CPU is busy. Energy is another concern when the devices are in low battery level but users need them for urgency use. To ease such pains, one approach is to expand the computational power by cloud offloading. This paradigm works well when the available Internet access has enough bandwidth. Another way, however, is to leverage nearby devices for computation offloading, which is known as device-to-device (D2D) offloading. In this paper, we present Dandelion, a unified code offloading system...

Numerical Modelling on Effects of Elevated Temperatures on the Performance of Concrete-filled Pultruded GFRP Tubular Columns

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mollakhalili, Arian (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Concrete-filled FRP tubes have gained popularity among structures in areas with harsh environmental condition. Despite their unique material properties such as resistance to corrosion, noticeable axial stiffness, and durability, FRP materials have poor resistance to elevated temperatures. This paper presents numerical investigations on the behavior and capacity of concrete-filled pultruded GFRP tubes (CFGFTs) after exposure to elevated temperatures under concentric compression. Variables in this study were the tube’s thickness of 3, 5, and 7mm, the infill concrete’s compressive strengths of 30 and 60MPa, and the exposure temperature of 25, 100, 200, 300, and 400°C. The results in this study...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Tabatabaeian Nimavard, Mojtaba (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Concrete-filled GFRP and PE tubes are composite systems using the polymeric tubes as confinement for the marine structures to extend their service life. However, elevated temperatures and thermal cycles in marine environments can affect the behavior of such composite systems. In this investigation, the effect of elevated temperatures and thermal cycles on the performance of concrete-filled pultruded GFRP tubes (CFPGT) and concrete-filled polyethylene tubes (CFPT) is assessed, respectively. For this, different parameters such as concrete core strength (30 and 60 MPa), exposure temperature (25, 100, 200, 300, and 400°C), time exposure (60 and 120 min.), number of thermal cycles (50, 100, and...

Dynamic Performance Enhancement of RC Slabs by Steel Fibers vs. Externally Bonded GFRP Sheets under Impact Loading

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Soltani, Hesam (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Recently, to improve the dynamic behavior of Reinforced Concrete (RC) slabs under impact load, the methods of externally bonding Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) sheets to slab and internally reinforcing concrete by steel fibers have been proposed. Nevertheless, it is required to investigate the comparison between these two methods on response of RC slabs under impact loads. In this study, the influence of volume fraction of steel fibers, the number of GFRP sheet layers (one or two) and the arrangement of GFRP sheets (covering the whole or parts of surface), are examined. Performance of fourteen mm concrete slabs including one plain slab, one steel RC slab, three steel RC slabs...

Behavior of Concrete Frames Reinforced with FRP Bars

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tafarroji, Armin (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
FRP rebars due to various properties such as high resistance to weight ratio, high corrosion resistance, high tensile strength, low weight, resistance to electrical and magnetic conductivity, and other desirable properties, have always been an interesting topic for researchers as an alternative to steel rebars in special conditions. In this research, a two-dimensional sway intermediate concrete frame with three stories and two bays reinforced with GFRP bars was designed and studied. Unlike previous researches and design codes, the compressive strength of the bars was considered in the design process. With computer coding in Matlab software, column interaction diagrams and a special contour...

Numerical Investigation of the Performance of Concrete Beamcolumns with FRP Bars under Concentric and Eccentric Loading and Four-Points Bending

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aghabozorgi, Pegah (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bars with significant corrosion resistance lead to an improvement in the performance of concrete structures and a significant reduction in costs. High ratio of tensile strength to weight, non-conductive, and non-magnetic properties are other features of GFRP bars. Recent international design standards, such as ACI 440.1R-15 do not recommend including FRP reinforcement in compression, so they replace them by concrete in calculations. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of concentric and excentric axial loading on the axial capacity and ductility of GFRP reinforced concrete columns compared to steel reinforced concrete columns,...

Investigation of Dynamic Behavior of Concrete Slabs Reinforced with GFRP Bars and Prestressed Concrete Slabs under Impact Loading

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Sadraie, Hamid (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Prestressed and reinforced concrete slabs are common structural elements that could be exposed to impact loading. Although, use of reinforced concrete slabs and utilization of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) as alternative to traditional steel reinforcement slabs are growing, but the influence of various parameters on their response under impact loads is not properly evaluated. In addition, studies on steel reinforced concrete slabs have been found in literature, but investigation of prestressed slabs and GFRP reinforced concrete slabs under impact load is limited. This study investigated the effect of rebar’s material, amount and arrangement of reinforcements, concrete strength and slab...

The concrete was used in this study is C45 and as a constant parameter.Specimens were tested with four-point bending method using the actuator equipped at the strong floor laboratory to attain maximum flexural strength and...

Seismic Performance Evaluation of Moment Frame Using Concrete Beams Reinforced with FRP Bars

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ali Asghar Mamaghani, Mojtaba (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today, many evidences, including the distribution of galactic velocities, gravitational lensing observations, and the cosmic microwave background, show that there exist dark matter (non-baryon matter) in large-scale cosmological structures that are stable, free of charge and without color, which has gravitational interaction like normal matter. The hypothesis that weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) as a dark matter candidate with mass range of several tens of GeV to several teV and with the typical couplings of Electroweak order of magnitude, is an attractive and desirable model, Which naturally explains the density of cosmic dark matter in agreement with observations. Alongside...
