Different profiles of the rate, pressure, and temperature of the two-dimensional tube at volume fraction, porosity coefficient and Darcy numbers have been obtained and finally, the results are compared. Then, the Nusselt number and the friction coefficient in the range...

Prediction of waterflood performance using a modified capacitance-resistance model: A proxy with a time-correlated model error

    , Article Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering ; Volume 198 , March , 2020 Mamghaderi, A ; Aminshahidy, B ; Bazargan, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B. V  2020
    Abstract
Capacitance-Resistive Model (CRM), as a fast yet efficient proxy model, suffers from some limitations in modeling relatively complex reservoirs. Some current improvements on this proxy made it a more powerful simulator with updating parameters over time. However, the model's intrinsic uncertainty arisen from simplifying fluid-flow modeling by some limited number of constant parameters is not addressed yet. In this study, this structural limitation of CRM has been addressed by introducing a time-correlated model error, including stochastic and non-stochastic parameters, embedded into this proxy's formulation. The error term's non-stochastic parameters have been tuned to be used in forecasting...

    , Article Physics of Fluids ; Volume 32, Issue 7 , 2020 Omidi, J ; Mazaheri, K ; Sharif University of Technology
American Institute of Physics Inc  2020
    Abstract
Plasma actuator is a flow control device to improve the aerodynamic performance of wind turbine blades at low airspeeds. One of the most robust numerical models for simulation of plasma actuator interaction with the fluid flow is the electrostatic model. This model is improved recently and is extensively verified by the authors. Due to the high cost of performing experimental optimizations, the optimized geometrical dimensions and materials of a plasma actuator may be sought by this numerical model. The aim of the present study is the aerodynamic enhancement of a DU21 wind turbine blade airfoil in which the effect of geometric parameters and the dielectric material is examined separately....

Simulation of wetting tendency of fluids with high density ratios using RK Lattice Boltzmann method

    , Article 16th Asian Regional Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, ARC 2019, 14 October 2019 through 18 October 2019 ; 2020 Sadeghi, M ; Pak, A ; Sadeghi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
Asian Regional Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering  2020
    Abstract
Several lattice Boltzmann models for multi-phase flow have been developed, but few of them are capable of modeling fluid flows with high density ratio in the order of 1000. Therefore, an advanced chromodynamics, Rothmann-Keller (RK) type model is employed in current study, which can handle liquid-gas density ratio in the order of 1000 and viscosity ratio in the order of 100. Other distinctive characteristics of the proposed model are high stability, and capability of setting parameters such as surface tension independently. In spite of these benefits, the original RK model fails to model wetting tendency of the fluids. As a result, it is impossible to correctly simulate two-fluid phase flow...

    Abstract
Inertial microfluidics is utilized as a powerful passive method for particle and cell manipulation, which uses the hydrodynamic forces of the fluid in the channel to focus particles in specific equilibrium positions in the cross section of the channel. To achieve high performance manipulation, knowledge of focusing pattern of particles in the cross section of channel is essential. In this paper, we propose a method to address this important issue. To this end, firstly inertial microfluidics is analyzed in rectangular cross section channels. The results indicate that fluid flow velocity and channel's cross-sectional profiles have great impacts on the forces exerted on particles. Next, these...

    Abstract
The aim of this research is to design an implantable integrated microfluidic system in order to regularly measure the glucose level in the human body, nonenzymatically, using the microdialysis method. The main compartments of this system are a micropump, array of hollow microneedles and an electrochemical sensor. At the base of the microneedles, there are located semipermeable membranes, that when the pumped dialysis fluid passes over them, the glucose of the interstitial fluid diffuses into the dialysis fluid and then, in the sensor section, it is measured nonenzymatically using the amperometry method. Both the arrangement of the miconeedles and the amount of the dialysis fluid flow are...

An exact analytical model for fluid flow through finite rock matrix block with special saturation function

    , Article Journal of Hydrology ; Volume 577 , 2019 ; 00221694 (ISSN) Izadmehr, M ; Abbasi, M ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Sharifi, M ; Kazemi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2019
    Abstract
An exact analytical solution for one-dimensional fluid flow through rock matrix block is presented. The nonlinearity induced from flow functions makes the governing equations describing this mechanism difficult to be analytically solved. In this paper, an analytical solution to the infiltration problems considering non-linear relative permeability functions is presented for finite depth, despite its profound and fundamental importance. Elimination of the nonlinear terms in the equation, as a complex and tedious task, is done by applying several successive mathematical manipulations including: Hopf-Cole transformation to obtain a diffusive type PDE; an exponential type transformation to get a...

    Abstract
Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing is a novel technology used for fabricating high-resolution part features from a wide range of materials. Due to the multiphysics dynamics and the multiphase nature of the microdroplet formation in the EHD printers, modeling of this phenomenon is complicated. In this paper, the formation of a droplet in an EHD printer—under a pulsed electrical field—is simulated using a new numerical model which couples the fluid flow, the electric field distribution and the movement of the electric charges under dynamic and transient conditions. The level-set method is applied to the entire multiphysics domain in order to study the formation of the droplet. The presented...

    Abstract
Hybrid FVM-LBM schemes are developed in the past few years to use capabilities of both Navier-Stokes based finite volume method (FVM) and lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) to solve macro-meso multiscale problems. In this scheme, the major task is to develop some lifting relations that reconstruct distribution functions in LBM sub-domain from macroscopic variables and their derivatives. The macroscopic variables are computed using Navier-Stokes based FVM in macroscale sub-domain, while distribution functions are computed using LBM in mesoscale sub-domain. The pioneer works in this area used the single relaxation time (SRT) version of LBM. However, it is known that the numerical stability and...

    Abstract
Scale precipitation due to the mixing of incompatible injected water with formation brine and its subsequent deposition in porous media is an unpleasant phenomenon in water injection projects that can lead to severe injectivity and productivity decline. As a result of the complexity of geochemical reactions, modelling scale precipitation and deposition is a challenge. This paper presents a coupled geochemical and fluid flow model to simulate reactive flow in porous media which models pressure difference increase resulting from scale formation during water injection into porous media. To simulate chemical reactions during scale formation and subsequent rock permeability decline, PHREEQC...

    Abstract
Recently, Colloidal Gas Aphron (CGA) based fluids have been introduced to further develop depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs. This fluid system has been employed in an attempt to control drilling fluid invasion and, thus, reducing formation damage occurred during drilling operations. Understanding the mechanisms of fluid invasion control is of great importance for successful design and application of CGA-based fluids in drilling operations. Although fluid flow of conventional foams has been studied extensively in the available literature, little attention has been paid to CGA fluids flow, especially in heterogeneous fractured porous media. Here, an experimental study was conducted to achieve...

    Abstract
In this article, effects of magnetic fields induced by a finite length solenoid on the forced-convection heat transfer in a pipe partially filled with porous medium have been investigated. In this regard, two-dimensional steady-state fluid flow in the pipe was considered and the Darcy–Brinkman equation of motion was applied to model the fluid flow in the porous medium, as well as the thermal equilibrium was assumed between the solid phase and the magnetic nanofluid. Effects of electric current passing through the solenoid and the solenoid dimensions (i.e.; diameter and length) on the forced-convection heat transfer were studied carefully. The combined effects of the magnetic field and the...

Bidirectional water transport through non-straight carbon nanotubes

    , Article Journal of Molecular Liquids ; Volume 276 , 2019 , Pages 39-46 ; 01677322 (ISSN) Kargar, S ; Moosavi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2019
    Abstract
Natural nanochannels and those used for applied purposes are often several nanometers in diameter and have lengths up to micrometer scales. Since normally no pressure gradient, mechanical force or electrical field is exerted on fluids in these situations, the fluid flow within them is not single-file and can be bidirectional. For this reason, studying the behavior of bidirectional flows in the channels is of paramount importance. In this study, a comprehensive investigation on the straight and non-straight bidirectional water transfer through carbon nanotubes is conducted via extensive molecular dynamics simulations. The results indicate that by changing the length, the diameter and the...
