    Abstract
Reliability evaluation is a key factor in serviceability and safety analysis of air vehicles. Structural health monitoring methods have grown to a degree of maturity in many industries. However, there is a challenging interest to tie in SHM with reliability assessment. In this respect, consideration of stochastic structural dynamics with SHM data and random loadings opens a new chapter in failure prevention. The current study focuses on the stochastic behavior of structures as a way to relate SHM data with reliability. In this respect, uncertain factors such as atmospheric turbulence, structural parameters, and sensor outputs are considered in the process of reliability assessment. Firstly,...

In this study, a new idea is employed for the re-construction of the 20 shut-down PM10 monitoring stations of Berlin. It endeavours to find the non-linear relationship between the hourly PM10 concentration of both the still operating and the shut-down PM10 monitoring stations by using a fuzzy modelling technique, called modified active learning method (MALM). In addition, the simulations were performed by using not only raw PM10 databases but also log-transformed PM10 databases for skewness reduction. According to the results of hourly PM10 simulation (root mean square error about...

Reliability assessment of the standby system with dependent components by bivariate exponential distributions

, Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part O: Journal of Risk and Reliability ; Volume 236, Issue 5 , 2022 , Pages 761-769 ; 1748006X (ISSN) Yaghoubi, A ; Gholami, P ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In the reliability analysis of systems, all system components are often assumed independent and failure of any component does not depend on any other component. One of the reasons for doing so is that considerations of calculation and elegance typically pull in simplicity. But in real-world applications, there are very complex systems with lots of subsystems and a choice of multiple components that may interact with each other. Therefore, components of the system can be affected by the occurrence of a failure in any of the components. The purpose of this paper is to give an explicit formula for the computation of the reliability of a system with two parallel active components and one spare...

    Abstract
Extensive recent researches have been underway to model the fracture mechanics degradation based on continuum damage mechanics (CDM) technique. CDM theory is a powerful tool for solving problems such as large plastic deformations that the fracture mechanics is unable to solve. This model is derived by means of the thermodynamics internal variable theory and based on the experimental results on material properties. In this paper, the reliability of rectangular plates containing a central circular hole under static tensile load using the CDM approach for ductile fracture has been studied. To investigate the initiation and evolution of damages, anisotropic damage expressed by second order...

    Abstract
Assessment of architectural evolution is a challenge and plays a significant role in system evolution management. Although the evolution rules of the software architecture are defined by some expert engineers or architects, there is no guarantee that applying them will end to the desired change. So, having a reliable assessment technique promotes the overall accuracy and quality of the evolution process. Compliance checking with expert-defined rules is a well-known assessment approach that can be applied in architectural evolution. In this paper, an approach is proposed for compliance checking of evolution processes. To this end, evolution paths and processes are modeled by Reo coordination...

    Abstract
Meeting the reliability requirements in wind integrated power systems is a challenging problem due to the volatility of wind power generation. Wide implementation of demand response (DR) programs is an effective solution for this problem. This paper studies the impacts of DR programs on short-term reliability assessment of wind integrated power systems. A new algorithm including the effects of time and components initial states is presented for short-term reliability evaluation. This algorithm involves a multi-segment optimal power flow (OPF) approach to model the lead-time of DR and reserve resources. Taking into account the uncertainties associated with DR programs, a new model for these...

    Abstract
Continuity of supply plays a significant role in modern distribution system planning and operational studies. Accordingly, various techniques have been developed for reliability assessment of distribution networks. However, owing to the complexities and restrictions of these methods, many researchers have resorted to several heuristic optimization algorithms for solving reliability-constrained optimization problems. Therefore, solution quality and convergence to global optimality cannot be guaranteed. Aiming to address this issue, two salient mathematical models are introduced in this paper for topology-variable-based reliability evaluation of both radial and radially-operated meshed...

    Abstract
Depending on the application in which power electronic converters (PECs) are deployed, failure processes may endanger the desirable performance of PECs. This paper offers holistic insights on reliability modeling of PECs considering dependencies in two simultaneous failure processes, namely gradual wearing-out degradation and vibration sudden degradation. While sudden and gradual degradation processes may individually affect the useful lifetime of PECs, their mutual interdependencies could significantly accelerate the aging mechanisms. A new analytical model for reliability assessment of PECs is proposed that can capture such mutual interdependence of simultaneous failure processes. The...

    Abstract
Standard mathematical-programming-based models have attracted considerable attention for optimizing distribution system planning and operation due to their salient advantages. More specifically, mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) has proven very effective in modeling such problems. The availability of optimization software for efficiently solving MILP problems with guaranteed convergence to optimality while providing a measure of the distance to the optimal solution has made MILP models more popular. Although a plethora of efficient MILP formulations have been proposed for planning and operating studies of distribution grids, incorporating reliability into such models is still...

    Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop an efficient probability-based seismic fragility assessment method for steel moment-resisting frames (MRFs). In this method, Bayes estimators are used to improve the accuracy of the results based on new analyses or experimental observations. The efficiency of Bayes estimators in the updating process of fragility curves is demonstrated based on the results of incremental dynamic analysis of three-, five- and seven-storey steel MRFs under a set of 40 spectrum-compatible earthquake ground motions. The results indicate that the constant-hazard-level (engineering demand parameter based) fragility analysis approach leads to less than 6% error in the prediction...

    Abstract
Localization and quantification of structural damage and estimating the failure probability are key outputs in the reliability assessment of structures. In this study, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is used to reduce the computational effort required for reliability analysis and damage detection. Toward this end, one demonstrative structure is modeled and then several damage scenarios are defined. These scenarios are considered as training data sets for establishing an ANN model. In this regard, the relationship between structural response (input) and structural stiffness (output) is established using ANN models. The established ANN is more economical and achieves reasonable accuracy in...
