Non-equilibrium model of gravity drainage in a single block

    , Article Journal of Porous Media ; Vol. 16, issue. 6 , 2013 , p. 559-571 ; ISSN: 1091028X Jahanbakhshi, S ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Masihi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This work concerns with developing a non-equilibrium model of gravity drainage in a single block. The proposed model which considers both non-equilibrium effects of capillary pressure and relative permeabilities is used for prediction of oil recovery by gravity drainage from a single block. Close agreement observed between the model results and experimental data disclosed that the non-equilibrium assumption is completely reliable for modeling of gravity drainage. The results revealed that when the characteristic time of the saturation variation is comparable with the time required to establish capillary equilibrium, the non-equilibrium effects in gravity drainage must be considered. The...

    , Article Petroleum Science and Technology ; Vol. 29, issue. 3 , Sep , 2009 , p. 290-300 ; ISSN: 10916466 Tafty, M. F ; Masihi, M ; Momeni, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Water and miscible gas injection scenarios are considered in an Iranian oil reservoir for the purpose of recovery improvement. Firstly reservoir fluid modeling and modeling of a slim tube test were performed. Then, water alternating gas (WAG) injection was evaluated by optimizing the WAG half cycle and WAG ratio. Alternatively, hybrid WAG and separate injection of water and gas in the top and bottom of the reservoir were also investigated. The numerical simulation results showed that the optimum WAG, with half cycle of 1.5 years and WAG ratio of one, gave the highest recovery factor. Moreover, economic evaluation of these scenarios indicated that WAG had the highest net present value and was...

    , Article Arabian Journal of Geosciences ; 2014 ; ISSN: 18667511 Haeri, H ; Khaloo, A ; Marji, M. F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this research, a coupled numerical-experimental analysis of crack propagation, crack coalescence, and breaking process of jointed rock slopes is performed by studying the mechanical behavior of pre-cracked brittle substances considering the specially prepared rock-like specimens (rock-like specimens are specially prepared by a proper mixing of Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC), fine sand, and water in a rock mechanics laboratory) and natural rock slopes, simultaneously. The numerical analyses are accomplished using a numerical code based on the higher-order displacement discontinuity method (HODDM). A cubic displacement discontinuity variation along each boundary element is assumed to...

    Abstract
One of the methods that is used nowadays in enhanced oil recovery is surfactant flooding. The main mechanisms of surfactant flooding in reservoir consist of reduction of interfacial tension between water and oil and modification of rock wettability. In this study, the authors simulate the surfactant injection process in Darcy scale and in one-dimensional, multicomponent, multiphase state, and effects of physical phenomena such as adsorption, dispersion, convection, and exchange between fluids and solids are considered. Wettability alteration of reservoir rock due to presence of surfactant in injected fluid is detected in relative permeability and capillary pressure curves. First, the authors...

Aquifers are underground porous formations containing water. Confined aquifers are the formations surrounded by two impermeable layers, called cap rocks and bed rocks. These aquifers are suitable for seasonal thermal energy storage. In the present study, a confined aquifer was considered to meet the cooling and heating energy needs of a residential complex located in Tehran, Iran. Three different alternatives were analyzed in this aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES), including: using ATES for cooling alone, for cooling and heating, as a heat pump, and for heating alone, employing flat plate solar energy collectors. A numerical simulation, based on the finite difference method, was carried...

    , Article Applied Mechanics and Materials ; Vol. 629, issue , 2014 , pp. 97-103 ; ISSN: 16609336 Banazadeh A ; Banazadeh, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper provides an understanding of counter-flow fluidic thrust vectoring, in the presence of the secondary air vacuum, applied to the exhaust nozzle of a micro-jet engine. An analytical and numerical study is performed here on a divergent collar surface adjacent to the cylindrical exhaust duct system. The vectoring angle is controlled by manipulating the momentum flux through a vacuum gap that is located on a circle concentric to the main nozzle. Three dimensional numerical simulations are conducted by utilizing a computational fluid dynamics model with two-equation standard k-ε turbulence model to study the pressure and velocity distribution of internal flow and nozzle geometry....

    Abstract
The simulation and experimental results obtained from stretching test of a commercial sheet of AA1200 aluminum alloy were compared and evaluated. Uniaxial tensile tests were carried out to obtain the required input parameters for simulation. Finite element analysis of the forming process was carried out using Abaqus/Explicit by considering von Mises and Hill-1948 yield criteria. Simulation results including punch force and strain distribution were compared and validated with the experimental results. The results reveal that using anisotropic yield criteria for simulation has a better match in both cases with the experiments

Two plasticity approaches including the Chaboche's hardening model and the Nagode's spring-slider model are applied to simulate cyclic behaviors. To validate obtained results, strain-controlled fatigue tests are performed under low cycle and thermo-mechanical fatigue loadings. Numerical results demonstrate a good agreement with...

Control of nonholonomic mobile manipulators for cooperative object transportation

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Vol. 21, issue. 2 , 2014 , p. 347-357 Sayyaadi, H ; Babaee, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a methodology for transporting objects with a group of wheeled nonholonomic mobile manipulators is presented. A full dynamic model of a mobile manipulator with a three wheeled mobile base and a three DOF manipulator is derived using the Gibbs-Appell method. Since the dynamical equations of a mobile robot are highly nonlinear, an input-output linearization technique is used to control individual robots. Transporting the object is divided into two steps. First, the robots use a decentralized behavior-based method to approach and surround the object. Then, a virtual structure method is used to control the robots to transport the object cooperatively. A numerical simulation study...

    , Article Journal of Dispersion Science and Technology ; Vol. 35, issue. 12 , Aug , 2014 , p. 1764-1773 Hamidpour, E ; Mirzaei-Paiaman, A ; Ramazani, S. A. A ; Hatami, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Gravity, viscous, and capillary are three main forces affecting flow characteristics in porous media. No analytical solution can be found to model the flow by considering all these forces. In this work, by considering all these forces, the polymer-flooding process is modeled by using a numerical simulation approach. For characterizing the polymer, the modified Blake-Kozeny model is chosen, which benefits consideration of the permeability reduction due to polymer adsorption on the rock surface

The Effect of the Step Height on Energy Dissipation in Stepped Spillways Using Numerical Simulation

    , Article Arabian Journal for Science and Engineering ; Vol. 39, issue. 4 , 2014 , p. 2587-2594 Attarian, A ; Hosseini, K ; Abdi, H ; Hosseini, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
From 1970s, studies have been conducted on the hydraulic design of stepped spillways and many empirical formulas were developed. Despite the simple geometry of these spillways, their hydraulic behavior is complicated. As a result, for many cases, the physical models are studied to verify the design. Numerical simulation is considered as a tool to reduce the laboratory tests, in order to save time and money. Furthermore, the parameters which are not investigated or measured in physical models could be evaluated. In this paper, the results of numerical simulations are compared with the results of physical models and empirical formulas for the spillway of Renwick dam studied in a 1/8 scale...

    , Article Metals and Materials International ; Volume 19, Issue 5 , September , 2013 , Pages 959-967 ; 15989623 (ISSN) Haghayeghi, R ; Ezzatneshan, E ; Bahai, H ; Nastac, L ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
An investigation was carried out on the grain refinement of molten AA5754 Aluminum alloy through intensive shearing. The results show intensive shearing via cavitation decreases the grain size significantly. The above hypothesis for structure refinement was evaluated and an experiment was performed to ensure the creditability of this assumption. Finally, it was simulated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. It was understood that shearing is the responsible mechanism for creation of cavitation bubbles and further collapse of them. It was also concluded the pressure which generated from the collapse of the bubble is well enough for braking the oxide layer and wetting them. It was...

    Abstract
This paper investigates the development of cellular structures created by the propagation of a detonation wave in a gaseous mixture. Two dimensional reactive Euler equations with an idealized one-step Arrhenius type reaction model are solved using the PPM scheme coupled with the exact Riemann solver. The numerical flow solver simulates the evolution process of regular cellular structures of a weakly unstable detonation wave. The cellular structures are generated by two-dimensional sinusoidal perturbations imposed on a ZND detonation wave. The initial sinusoidal perturbation wavelengths are predicted from linear stability analysis. The objective of these calculations is to examine the...

2D numerical simulation of density currents using the SPH projection method

    , Article European Journal of Mechanics, B/Fluids ; Volume 38 , 2013 , Pages 38-46 ; 09977546 (ISSN) Ghasemi V., A ; Firoozabadi, B ; Mahdinia, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Density currents (DCs) or gravity currents are driven by gravity in a fluid environment with density variation. Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) has been proved to have capabilities such as free surface modeling and accurate tracking of the immiscible-fluids interface that can be useful in the context of gravity currents. However, SPH applications to gravity currents have been limited to often-coarse simulations of high density-ratio currents. In this work, the SPH projection method is tried to solve currents with very low density-ratios (close to one), at a resolution, that captures the Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities at the fluids interface. Existing implementations of the SPH...
