Electrochemical functionalization of graphene nanosheets with catechol derivatives as an effective method for preparation of highly performance supercapacitors

    , Article Electrochimica Acta ; Vol. 147, issue , 2014 , pp. 136-142 ; ISSN: 00134686 Jokar, E ; Shahrokhian, S ; Zad, A. I ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Performance enhancement of supercapacitors has been recently discussed. In this paper a novel and facile procedure for functionalization of graphene with some electroactive molecules is presented. The graphene has been functionalized by catechol-based molecules, which are electroactive molecules with electrochemically reversible properties. The functionalized graphene exhibits very effective pseudocapacitor behaviorfor charge storage. For the first time, with the aim of an electrosynthesis procedure, catechol is covalently attached on graphene sheets. This attachment has been investigated by electrochemical, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and attenuated total reflectance methods. Catechol...

Graphene nanosheets were also prepared via modified Hummer's method followed by chemical reduction using hydrazine monohydrate. Electrical conductivity measurements using a standard four-point probe technique with FTIR and UV-vis studies revealed that conductive binary-doped emeraldine salt...

Nanosheet arrays of TiO2synthesized by one step conversion of ZnO nanosheets: Boosting of electron transport rate and application in dye solar cells

    , Article RSC Advances ; Vol. 4, issue. 85 , 2014 , pp. 45174-45179 ; ISSN: 20462069 Alimirsalari, S ; Tajabadi, F ; Salehkoutahi, S. M ; Ghahary, R ; Taghavinia, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A TiO2replica of ZnO nanosheet films is synthesized using a chemical replacement process. ZnO nanosheets are grown by electrodeposition on fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) films, and a dissolution/deposition process is used to convert the ZnO template into a TiO2replica. Electron microscopy shows the final TiO2structure follows the morphology of the initial ZnO template. X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive spectroscopy verify the total transformation of ZnO to TiO2. The as-synthesized TiO2sheets are amorphous and after annealing turn into the anatase phase. The film of TiO2nanosheets is used as the photoanode of a dye sensitized solar cell. Despite the low roughness factor of 100, a...

    Abstract
For the first time graphene nanosheets and carbon nanospheres/chitosan (GNS-CNS/CS) based nanocomposite film modified electrode was used for the electro-oxidation of mebendazole (MD). MD is a benzimidazole drug that is used to treat human infections caused by parasitic worms. MD causes slow immobilization and death of the worms by selectively and irreversibly blocking uptake of glucose. The electrochemical behavior of MD at GNS-CNS/CS modified glassy carbon electrode has been investigated using cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry in aqueous media at different pHs. The prepared electrode showed an excellent electrochemical activity toward the electro-oxidation of MD leading to a...

Wrapping bacteria by graphene nanosheets for isolation from environment, reactivation by sonication, and inactivation by near-infrared irradiation

    , Article Journal of Physical Chemistry B ; Volume 115, Issue 19 , 2011 , Pages 6279-6288 ; 15206106 (ISSN) Akhavan, O ; Ghaderi, E ; Esfandiar, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Bioactivity of Escherichia coli bacteria (as a simple model for microorganisms) and interaction of them with the environment were controlled by their capturing within aggregated graphene nanosheets. The oxygen-containing functional groups of chemically exfoliated single-layer graphene oxide nanosheets were reduced by melatonin as a biocompatible antioxidant. While each one of the graphene (oxide) suspension and melatonin solution did not separately show any considerable inactivation effects on the bacteria, aggregation of the sheets in the melatonin-bacterial suspension resulted in trapping the bacteria within the aggregated sheets, i.e., a kind of inactivation. The bacteria trapped within...

    Abstract
In this study synthesis of a drug delivery system (DDS) is described which has several merits over its counterparts. In order to synthesize this nano-carrier, graphene oxide nano-sheets are used to accommodate MCM-41 nanoparticles. Furthermore Fe3O4 nanoparticles are introduced to this nano-material to produce a traceable nanoparticle. Since cancerous tissues have lower pH than healthy tissues, pH-sensitive oligomers are attached to this nano-material. Finally the nano-carrier is wrapped by a biocompatible shell (PEGylated sodium alginate); this polymeric shell makes the DDS capable of a more controllable drug release. By measuring in vitro situation, ‘loading content%’...

    Abstract
Recently, hybrid graphene–quantum dot systems have attracted increasing attention for the next-generation optoelectronic devices such as ultrafast photo-detectors and solar energy harvesting. In this paper, a novel, one-step, reproducible, and solution-processed method is introduced to prepare hybrid graphene–PbS colloids by employing supercritical ethanol. In the hybrid nanocomposite, PbS quantum dots (~3 nm) are decorated on the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets (~1 nm thickness and less than 1 micron lengths). By employing X-ray photoelectron and Raman and infrared spectroscopy techniques, it is shown that the rGO nanosheets are bonded to PbS nanocrystals through carboxylic bonds....

    Abstract
The graphene-based Ziegler-Natta catalyst has been used to prepare ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene/graphene oxide (UHMWPE/GO) nanocomposite via in situ polymerization. The morphological investigations have been conducted using X-ray diffraction patterns and scanning electron microscopy method. The obtained results indicated that no diffraction peak is detected in a GO pattern, which could be due to the exfoliation of graphene nanosheets in the UHMWPE matrix. Morphological investigations indicated that GO nanosheets are dispersed almost uniformly in polymeric matrix, and that there should exist a good interaction between nanofillers and matrix. The mechanical properties of the...

Magnetite/dextran-functionalized graphene oxide nanosheets for in vivo positive contrast magnetic resonance imaging

    , Article RSC Advances ; Volume 5, Issue 59 , May , 2015 , Pages 47529-47537 ; 20462069 (ISSN) Moradi, S ; Akhavan, O ; Tayyebi, A ; Rahighi, R ; Mohammadzadeh, M ; Saligheh Rad, H. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nanomaterials are widely used as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents (CAs). These CAs significantly shorten transverse relaxation time (T2) and so decrease the intensity of the T2-weighted MRI (negative contrast imaging). However, the partial-volume effect is known to be one of the problems in negative contrast MRI. In this work, SPIO nanoparticles were modified by dextran and graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets to achieve a positive contrast MRI with high intensity. This modification resulted in shortening the longitudinal relaxation time (T1) of the SPIO nanoparticles (in addition to the T2 shortening)....

    Abstract
In this study, novel graphene oxide/chitosan nanocomposite coatings with long term drugeluting potential are presented. The coatings are fabricated by the facile and reproducible electrophoretic deposition technique. Analysis of the prepared films shows that the graphene oxide nanosheets are exfoliated in the chitosan matrix. Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry reveals polymer attachment to the carboxylic bonds of graphene oxide, providing a strong interaction and exfoliation of the nanolayers. In vitro viability assay by human osteosarcoma cells (MG-63) demonstrates that the nanocomposite films are highly biocompatible up to 30 wt% graphene oxide, but at higher concentrations a slight...

To modify this inherent disadvantage, different approaches have been studied including synthesizing interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) and nanocomposite hydrogels. So, this study has focused on preparation of a novel full-IPN structure based on anionic monomers of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid/acrylic acid-sodium acrylate via facile solution polymerization technique in an aqueous media with incorporation of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets. Mechanical performance of materials in the "as-prepared condition" and "swollen state" was characterized via tensile, compression, and rheology tests,...

Toxicity of graphene and graphene oxide nanowalls against bacteria

    , Article ACS Nano ; Volume 4, Issue 10 , October , 2010 , Pages 5731-5736 ; 19360851 (ISSN) Akhavan, O ; Ghaderi, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Bacterial toxicity of graphene nanosheets in the form of graphene nanowalls deposited on stainless steel substrates was investigated for both Gram-positive and Gram-negative models of bacteria. The graphene oxide nanowalls were obtained by electrophoretic deposition of Mg2+-graphene oxide nanosheets synthesized by a chemical exfoliation method. On the basis of measuring the efflux of cytoplasmic materials of the bacteria, it was found that the cell membrane damage of the bacteria caused by direct contact of the bacteria with the extremely sharp edges of the nanowalls was the effective mechanism in the bacterial inactivation. In this regard, the Gram-negative Escherichia coli bacteria with an...

    Abstract
TiO2 nanoparticles were physically attached to chemically synthesized single-layer graphene oxide nanosheets deposited between Au electrodes in order to investigate the electrical, chemical, and structural properties of the TiO2/graphene oxide composition exposed to UV irradiation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that after effective photocatalytic reduction of the graphene oxide sheets by the TiO2 nanoparticles in ethanol, the carbon content of the reduced graphene oxides gradually decreased by increasing the irradiation time, while no considerable variation was detected in the reduction level of the reduced sheets. Raman spectroscopy indicated that, at first, the photocatalytic...

    Abstract
Graphene thin films with very low concentration of oxygen-containing functional groups were produced by reduction of graphene oxide nanosheets (prepared by using a chemical exfoliation) in a reducing environment and using two different heat treatment procedures (called one and two-step heat treatment procedures). The effects of heat treatment procedure and temperature on thickness variation of graphene platelets and also on reduction of the oxygen-containing functional groups of the graphene oxide nanosheets were studied by atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. While formation of the thin films composed of single-layer graphene nanosheets with minimum thickness of...

    Abstract
In the present study, three influential parameters including concentration, temperature and specific surface area of graphene nanosheets were investigated, which are the effective parameters on the viscosity and thermal conductivity of aqueous graphene nanosheets (GNP) nanofluids. A mathematical model developed by respond surface methodology (RSM) based on a central composite design (CCD). Also, the significance of the models was tested using the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The optimum results of aqueous GNP nanofluid showed that the concentration has a direct effect on the relative viscosity and thermal conductivity. Furthermore, predicted responses proposed by the Design Expert software...

    , Article International Journal of Hydrogen Energy ; Volume 41, Issue 39 , 2016 , Pages 17390-17398 ; 03603199 (ISSN) Larimi, A. S ; Kazemeini, M ; Khorasheh, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2016
    Abstract
A series of M-doped Pt[sbnd]MgO (M = Pd, Ir, Re, Ru, Rh and Cr) sheet-shaped nano-catalysts were synthesized by the controlled co-precipitation method. The effects of M-doping on both the physicochemical and the chemisorption characteristics of Pt[sbnd]MgO catalysts were examined. The performance of the catalysts for the aqueous phase reforming (APR) of glycerol was also investigated. The APR activity of Pt[sbnd]M[sbnd]MgO catalysts depended on the type of the M dopant used. The APR activity varied in the following order: Rh > Pd > Cr > Ir > undoped ≈ Ru > Re, with the Rh-promoted catalyst having an activity of about one order of magnitude higher than the Re-promoted catalyst at 250 °C. It...
