The Study of the Behaviour and Performance of a New Elevated Tank

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tajmir Riahi, Hossein (Author) ; Khansari, Vahid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Various types of tanks are used to store a variety of liquids, drinking water, chemicals, petrochemicals, and liquefied natural gas. Of these, one type is ‘elevated tank’ which is used to provide the required pressure for the water distribution systems rather than satisfying the water demand. Satisfactory performance of tanks during strong ground motions is crucial for modern facilities. Theoritical and experimental investigations of the dynamic behaviour of liquid storage tanks are conducted to seek possible improvments in the design of such tanks to resist earthquakes. The behaviour and performance of a new elevated tank was studied in this work. It was carried out through finite elements...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Roghangaran, Reza (Author) ; Haddadpour, Hassan (Supervisor) ; Dehghani Firouz-abadi, Rouhallah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This M.Sc thesis aims at studding system of fluid and solid interaction. Based on the potential flow assumption along with using the perturbation technique, the governing kinematic and dynamic boundary conditions of the first- and second-order velocity potential are derived. Then, a boundary element model is developed for the sloshing dynamics which is formulated in terms of the velocity potential of the liquid free-surface. The boundary element model is used to determine the natural mode shapes of sloshing and their corresponding frequencies. Using the modal analysis technique, a nonlinear model is represented for calculation of the first- and second-order potential which can be used to...

    Abstract
Considering the role of fluid storage tanks within or after an earthquake and the irreparable damages of such structures that arise from the flammable or toxic nature of the fluids stored in them, it is very important to ensure stability and durability of the tanks under seismic loading. One of the most important damages to storage tanks within the past earthquakes has been lack of stability of their shells taking place in the form of a local bulge of wall, known as “elephant foot buckling’. This phenomenon is a subsequent of high levels of hoop tension, which is a result of containing liquid pressure, along with axial load of surrounding walls. Recent studies reveal that there is no...

Investigation of Dynamic Behavior and Structural Health Monitoring of the Gas Pipeline due to Turbulent Flow

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mostafavi, Mohsen (Author) ; Zabihollah, Abolghasem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Vibration is one of the major problems in gas and oil pipelines. Vibrations can cause damage to the pipes, supports, valves and other equipment installed in the system. These vibrations can be caused by equipment installed on pipelines like compressors and pumps or by fluid flow in pipes and fixed equipment like connections and valves. This research investigates the dynamic behavior of fluid flow in pipelines in Karanj and Parsi oil fields located in the southern part of Iran. The pipeline is responsible for injecting gas into the field. Excessive vibrations in the system cause repeatable damage which in turn increases the operating and maintenance cost. First, the vibration of pipelines has...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alipour, Davoud (Author) ; Saidi, Mohammad Said (Supervisor) ; Sani, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Insulin pump treatment is considered the most physiological way to imitate the healthy body's insulin profile in patients with diabetes. They provide a precisely controlled rate of insulin delivery to diabetic patients who would normally need multiple daily injections to regulate blood glucose levels. The firmware allows numerous modifications to the bolus dose and basal rate to enable patients to manage insulin levels in response to events such as eating, sleeping, and exercise.
In this Study, we have first investigated different models of insulin pumps on the market and chose the Spring ZoneTM insulin pump model for our study due to its innovative technology. This pump employs a...

    Abstract
In this thesis, We consider a model of a fluid–structure interaction defined on a bounded domain Ω ⊆ R2, that describes a body of elasticity interacting with a fluid. Ω is a bounded simply connected domain, consisting of two open sub-domains Ωs and Ωf .Ωf is the exterior domain with non-overlapping boundaries Γf and Γs, so that ∂Ωs = Γs. Ωs is an interior domain with boundary Γs.Ωs is occupied by an elastic body while Ωf is filled with a fluid. The interaction between the elastic body and the fluid takes place at the interface Γs.The dynamics of the fluid is described by the Navier–Stokes equation and the dynamics of the elastic body is described by an elasto-dynamic system of wave equations....

An Implicit Algorithm for Numerical Simulation of Large Deformation Structures with Incompressible Fluid Flow

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Fouladi, Nematollah (Author) ; Darbandi, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The fluid structure interaction (FSI) problems are widely encountered in many industrial applications in mechanical, aerospace, biomedical, marine, and wind engineering. The main contributions of this research are focused on simulating flow with moving or deforming boundaries including FSI problems with large movement or deformations. In this regard, a hybrid finite-element-volume (FEV) method was used in an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) framework. In this research, a new layer-by-layer mesh movement strategy was developed to perform the unstructured grid movement more robustly. This strategy converts the complex data structure of an unstructured grid to a simple quasi-structured data...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rajabzadeh Oghaz, Hamidreza (Author) ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Supervisor) ; Saidi, Mohammad Said (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Single ventricle anomaly is a congenital heart disease which is characterized by anatomical malformations. The main abnormality that a patient faces is desaturated blood flow, which, without any treatment increases the risk of death. The classical treatment is based on a three stage palliative procedure which should begin from the first few days of patient’s life. The final stage is known as Fontan procedure which directly connects inferior vena-cava to pulmonary arteries without going through the ventricle. This connection is known as Total Cavo Pulmonary Connection (TCPC). After surgery, the single ventricle could supply adequate and saturated systemic blood flow for the body, but TCPC...

Effects of Mechanical Loading Environment on Aneurysm

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abdollahi, Rahim (Author) ; Abedian, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Human body is subjected to body accelerations or vibrations in several circumstances. During gravitational changes, the hydrostatic pressure gradient along the body axis changes, and then body fluids are redistributed. Prolonged exposure to high level external acceleration may lead to serious or even fatal situations on account of disturbances in blood flow. Due to physiological importance of body acceleration many theoretical investigations have been carried out for the flow of blood under the influence of body acceleration. In this study, the mechanical loads that pilots experience during flight are considered. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of mechanical...

Multiscale Modeling of Coronary Blood Flow and Effects on Endothelial Cells

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Pakravan, Hossein Ali (Author) ; Saeedi, Mohammad Saeed (Supervisor) ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Atherosclerosis in coronary arteries is one of the most important topics due to its high prevalence and the importance of these arteries for supplying blood to the heart. The morphology of endothelial cells (ECs) is an independent index for determining the atheroprone sites. The ECs show a regular elongated and aligned configuration to the blood flow, at the atheroprotected regions; on the other hand, at the atheroprone regions, the cells have a polygonal, randomly oriented morphology. The thesis intended to propose a method for coronary artery simulation, which is able to determine the atheroprone sites regarding the ECs morphology. In addition, the attempts were made to investigate the...

Existence and Uniqueness of Solutions to a Fluidstructure Model Coupling the Navier-Stokes Equations and the Lame System

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Golmirzaee, Narges (Author) ; Hesaraki, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, we consider a system containing fluid equations, structure equations, and equations of these two materials’ common interface in three dimensions and on the regular domains. We suppose that the solid which is described by the Lamé system of linear elasticity, moves inside an incompressible viscous fluid in three dimensions, and the fluid obeys the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a time-dependent domain. At the fluid–solid interface, natural conditions are imposed, continuity of the velocities and of the Cauchy stress forces. The fluid and the solid are coupled through these conditions. By this interaction, the fluid deforms the boundary of the solid which in turn...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Rahmanian, Mohammad (Author) ; Dehghani Firouz Abadi, Ruhollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the current study, nonlinear vibration and stability of conical shells with both separate and concurrent internal and external flows are studied. External and internal flows are in the supersonic and subsonic regimes, respectively. The Krumhar’s aerodynamic piston theory is utilized to model the external loading on the structure as well as the compressible potential flow model to capture the internal fluid dynamics. The so-called compressible fluid model is obtained via simplification of the Navier-Stockes equations after applying the inviscid and irrotational assumptions. The nonlinear structural equations of motion are derived using the Hamiltonian dynamics approach and utilizing the...

    Abstract
In the present study, the numerical simulation of the panel flutter in compressible inviscid flow is performed by the compact finite difference method. For this purpose, the 2D compressible Euler equations written in the arbitrary Lagrange-Eulerian form are considered and the resulting system of equations in the generalized curvilinear coordinates is solved by the fourth-order compact finite-difference method. An appropriate nonlinear filter is applied for the shock capturing and for the solution to be stable. The governing equation for the panel is also numerically solved by using the fourth-order compact finite difference method. The time integration in the flow domain is made by the...

Analyzing Fluid–Structure Interaction Problems in Compressible Flows

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Azampour, Mohammad Hadi (Author) ; Hejranfar, Kazem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The goal of this thesis is the development and application of the finite volume method (FVM) with a same solution procedure in the fluid and structure domains for the simulation of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems in the compressible fluid flow. The unsteady Euler equations written in the arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) form are considered as the governing equations of the compressible fluid flow and the moderate/large nonlinear deformation of the elastic structure is considered to be governed by the Cauchy equations in the Lagrangian/total Lagrangian forms. Therefore, the nonlinear phenomena in the unsteady compressible fluid flow and the large deformation of the elastic...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseini Gerdeh Koohi, Mozhgan (Author) ; Rahimzadeh Rofooei, Fayaz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The objective of this research is to investigate the use of passive control system to reduce the seismic response of fixed-roof, above-ground, cylindrical steel tanks as well as to decrease the damage caused to these structures in the event of an earthquake. The most crucial step for a safe design in this case is determining the lateral forces due to earthquake with sufficient accuracy; These forces are eventually resisted by the storage tank walls and the supports. Determining analiytical solution to the problem is not possible due to the interaction of the liquid with the structure. Therefore, numerical approach was adopted to determine the response of the tank using ANSYS program. Two...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Roustaei, Mehrdad (Author) ; Dehghan Firoozabadi, Bahar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to increased atherosclerosis-caused mortality, identification of its genesis and development is of great importance. Although, key factors of the origin of the disease is still unknown, it is widely believed that cholesterol particle penetration and accumulation in arterial wall is mainly responsible for further wall thickening and decreased rate of blood flow during a gradual progression. To date, various effective components are recognized whose simultaneous consideration would lead to a more accurate approximation of Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) distribution within the wall. In this research, a multilayer Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) model is studied to simulate the penetration...

Investigation the Effect of Fluid/Structure Interaction on the Seismic Response of Structure Containing a Cylindrical Liquid Tank

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Khajeh Ahmad Attari, Nader (Author) ; Rahimzadeh Rofooei, Fayyaz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The lateral response of a Single Degree of Freedom (SDOF) structural system containing a rigid circular cylindrical liquid tank, under harmonic and earthquake excitations is considered. The governing differential equations of motion for the combined system is derived considering the first three liquid sloshing modes (1,1), (0,1), and (2,1), under horizontal excitation. The system is considered nonlinear due to the convective term of liquid acceleration and the nonlinear surface boundary conditions, both caused by the inertial nonlinearity. The harmonic and seismic response of the system is investigated in the neighborhood of 1:1 and 1:2 internal resonances between the SDOF system and the...
