Modeling of the Behavior of Prestressed Concrete Column Confined by CFRP Composites

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yazdani, Mohammad (Author) ; Kazemi, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Because of mistakes in the design and calculation, incoherence between construction and design, structural changes, changes in loads and also damages caused by the passage of the time, concrete structures need to be improved and strengthened. Polymeric sheets reinforced by fibers (FRP), according to their appropriate characteristic, are more efficient for strengthening concrete structures. Most studies on confined columns refers to confined RC columns with FRP and less mentioned about prestressed columns. In this study, the behavior of prestressed columns is analyzed by modeling a case of prestressed column in a nonlinear analysis software. Samples of confined concrete columns with CFRP and...

An Experimental Evaluation of Environmental Effects on Fiber Composites-Construction Materials Interface

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Yarigarravesh, Mahdireza (Author) ; Mofid, Masood (Supervisor) ; Toufigh, Vahab (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Most of the investigations during the two past decades focused on the effect of moisture and temperature on the bond at the interface of carbon or glass-fabrics and concrete, masonry or timber. Few investigations have studied the effect of chemical solutions, dry heat exposure and ultravilolent (UV) radiation on the bond at the interface of other types of fiber reinforced-polymers (FRPs) and masonry, timber and concrete in the short and long terms. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the effect of five chemical solutions with pH of 2.5±0.1, 7±0.1, 7.25±0.1, 10±0.1 and 12.5±0.1 on the interfacial bond strength between seven types of FRPs (unidirectional, bidirectional and hybrids)...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karami Pabandi, Hossein (Author) ; Kokabi, Amir Hossein (Supervisor) ; Movahedi, Mojtaba (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today, dissimilar joining of metal to polymer is in increasing demand in automotive and aerospace industries. Conventional methods for dissimilar joining of metal to polymer have limitations such as need for complex system and high surface sensitivity. Therefore, in this study, it has been tried to join pre-drilled aluminum sheets to polymer, based on frictional heat and creation of interlocks between the base parts. Refilling the hole is the main advantage of the method. AA5052 sheet with 2 mm thickness and polypropylene reinforced with 3 wt% short-carbon-fiber composite were used as primary materials. The effect of hole diameter in 4 and 5.5 mm and tool rotational speed in 500, 1000, 1500...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kazemi, Farshad (Author) ; Rahimzadeh Rofooei, Fayaz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Buried pipes are among the most important urban infra-structures which are developed to distribute water, gas, oil, etc.. Researchers have already demonstrated that extreme failures which lead to total disruption of the pipelines, both mains and the distribution network, due to permanent ground displacement in fault zones. In order to avoid any disturbance in the regular performance of pipelines and prevention of environmental contamination, there is a need to investigate the vulnerability of pipelines and their seismic retrofitting, if necessary. In the presented study, the method of pipeline retrofitting by high strength CFRP composite is investigated. In that regard, using a 3D model of...

As a result, it is seen that rotary ultrasonic-assisted machining has a good performance in the milling and drilling of advanced materials. In particular, it is shown that fiber pull-out is...

On the Seismic Behavior of RC Frames with Brick Infilled Walls with Opening, Retrofitted by FRP

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Paeini Vayghan, Mostafa (Author) ; Rahimzadeh Rofooei, Fayaz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Wall systems are an essential part of the buildings and their capacity should be properly considered in their design. However, the seismic behavior of building systems with in-filled walls and their interaction is a very complex issue, yet to be understood. Using the in-filled walls in the buildings without including them in the design process changes the whole behavior of the structural system as well as their failure mechanism under earthquake excitations. On the other hand, there have been extensive researches on rehabilitation of the structures with in-filled walls or designing them as the main or one of the lateral load carrying systems against seismic input. In this research, first the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moradi, Hossein (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The rehabilitation of old structures holds a lot of importance, as many structures with a life span of over 30 years are prone to severe damage and even collapse. To overcome this problem, the use of FRP sheets to strengthen structures is suggested. RC-arches have been used in many structures such as bridges and require specific consideration in terms of strengthening. So far, the influence of the number of FRP layers and location, the height of arch and percentage of reinforcement on strengthened arch behavior have not been investigated. In this research, reinforced concrete arch members strengthened with GFRP and CFRP were investigated. A total of 28 Specimens, including four...

Seismic Performance Evaluation of Moment Frame Using Concrete Beams Reinforced with FRP Bars

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ali Asghar Mamaghani, Mojtaba (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today, many evidences, including the distribution of galactic velocities, gravitational lensing observations, and the cosmic microwave background, show that there exist dark matter (non-baryon matter) in large-scale cosmological structures that are stable, free of charge and without color, which has gravitational interaction like normal matter. The hypothesis that weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) as a dark matter candidate with mass range of several tens of GeV to several teV and with the typical couplings of Electroweak order of magnitude, is an attractive and desirable model, Which naturally explains the density of cosmic dark matter in agreement with observations. Alongside...

Behavior of RC Concrete Column Strengthened with CFRP, Steel Jacketand Reinforced Concrete Jacket

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Haghdel, Farhad (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Reinforced concrete (RC) column in building often needs strengthening either due to defects in the column themselves, having to support higher loads than those foreseen in the initial design of the structure or as the result of ageing or accidental damage such as earthquake force. The use of FRP wrapping, steel caging or reinforce concrete jacketing for this purpose is now a common practice in many countries throughout the world. Even though a considerable number of researches have been conducted on retrofitting methods during past years, but very limited researches have been done to compare these methods. This research has investigated the effect of jacketing from different views. The...
