    Abstract
Contamination of ictal Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals by muscle artifacts is one of the critical issues related to clinically diagnosing seizure. Over the past decade, several methods have been proposed in time, frequency and time-frequency domain to accurately isolate ictal EEG activities from artifacts. Among denoising approaches Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) and Independent Component Analysis (ICA) are widely used. Denoising based on Generalized EigenValue Decomposition (GEVD) is one of the Semi-Blind Source Separation (SBSS) methods which has been recently proposed. In the GEVD-based method, a couple of time-frequency covariance matrices are used. These time-frequency (TF)...

    , Article IEEE Sensors Journal ; Volume 18, Issue 9 , 1 May , 2018 , Pages 3745-3751 ; 1530437X (ISSN) Abolfathi Momtaz, A ; Behnia, F ; Amiri, R ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Least squares estimation is a widely-used technique for range-based source localization, which obtains the most probable position of mobile station. These methods cannot provide desirable accuracy in the case with a non line of sight (NLOS) path between mobile station and base stations. To circumvent this drawback, many algorithms have been proposed to identify and mitigate this error; however, they have a large run-time overhead. On the other hand, new positioning systems utilize a large set of base stations, and a practical algorithm should be fast enough to deal with them. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm based on subspace method to identify and eliminate the NLOS error....

Complex modal analysis and coupled electromechanical simulation of energy harvesting piezoelectric laminated beams

    Abstract
In this paper, coupled electromechanical behavior of a vibrational energy harvesting system composed of a unimorph piezoelectric laminated beam with a large attached tip mass is investigated. To achieve this goal, first the electromechanically coupled partial differential equations governing the lateral displacement and output voltage of the harvester are extracted through exploiting the Hamilton’s principle. Considering vibration damping due to mechanical to electrical energy conversion, a complex modal analysis is performed to extract the complex eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions of the system. Furthermore, an exact analytical solution is presented for the system response to the harmonic...

True damping and frequency prediction for aeroelastic systems: The PP method

    , Article Journal of Fluids and Structures ; Volume 25, Issue 7 , 2009 , Pages 1177-1188 ; 08899746 (ISSN) Haddadpour, H ; Firouz Abadi, R. D ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper presents a numerical scheme for stability analysis of the aeroelastic systems in the Laplace domain. The proposed technique, which is called the PP method, is proposed for when the aerodynamic model is represented in the Laplace domain and includes complicated transcendental expressions in terms of the Laplace variable. This method utilizes a matrix iterative procedure to find the eigenvalues of the system and generalizes the other methods such as the P and PK methods for prediction of the flutter conditions. The major advantage of this technique over the other approximate methods is true prediction of subcritical damping and frequency values of the aeroelastic modes. To examine...

On the static and dynamic stability of thin beam conveying fluid

    Springer Netherlands  2019
    Abstract
In this paper, numerical investigation of the statical and dynamical stability of aligned and misaligned viscoelastic cantilevered beam is performed with a terminal nozzle in the presence of gravity in two cases: (1) effect of fluid velocity on the flutter boundary of beam conveying fluid and (2) effect of gravity on the buckling boundary of beam conveying fluid. The beam is assumed to have a large width-to-thickness ratio, so the out-of-plane bending rigidity is far higher than the in-plane bending and torsional rigidities. Gravity vector is considered in the vertical direction. Thus, deflection of the beam because of the gravity effect couples the in-plane bending and torsional equations....

    Abstract
In this paper, we argue that in many basic algorithms for machine learning, including support vector machine (SVM) for classification, principal component analysis (PCA) for dimensionality reduction, and regression for dependency estimation, we need the inner products of the data samples, rather than the data samples themselves.Motivated by the above observation, we introduce the problem of private inner product retrieval for distributed machine learning, where we have a system including a database of some files, duplicated across some non-colluding servers. A user intends to retrieve a subset of specific size of the set of the inner product of every pair of data items in the database with...

Tight bound on the stability of control systems over parallel gaussian channels using a new joint source channel coding

    Abstract
In this paper, we address the stability problem of a noiseless linear time invariant control system over parallel Gaussian channels with feedback. It is shown that the eigenvalues-rate condition which has been proved as a necessary condition, is also sufficient for stability over parallel Gaussian channels. In fact, it is proved that for stabilizing a control system over the parallel Gaussian channels, it suffices that the Shannon channel capacity obtained by the water filling technique is greater than the sum of the logarithm of the unstable eigenvalues magnitude. In order to prove this sufficient condition, we propose a new nonlinear joint source channel coding for parallel Gaussian...

    Abstract
This paper is concerned with estimation and stability of control systems over communication links subject to limited capacity, power constraint, fading, noisy feedback, and different transmission rate rather than system sampling rate. A key issue addressed in this paper is that in the presence of noisy feedback associated with channel, which models transmission of finite number of bits over such links as is the case in most practical scenarios, the well-known eigenvalues rate condition is still a tight bound for stability. Based on an information theoretic analysis, necessary conditions are derived for stability of discrete-time linear control systems via the distant controller in the mean...

    Abstract
In this paper, size-dependent vibration analysis of axially functionally graded (AFG) supported nanotubes conveying nanoflow under longitudinal magnetic fields are performed, aiming at performance improvement of fluid-interaction nanosystems. Either the density or the elastic modulus of the AFG nanotube varies linearly or exponentially along the axial direction. Based on the nonlocal continuum theory, the higher-order dynamical equation of motion of the system is derived considering no-slip boundary condition. Galerkin discretization technique and eigenvalue analysis are implemented to solve the modeled equation. The validity of the simplified model is justified by comparing the results with...

    Abstract
Stability analysis of a cantilevered pipe with an inclined terminal nozzle as well as simultaneous internal and external fluid flows is investigated in this study. The pipe is embedded in an aerodynamic cover with negligible mass and stiffness simply to streamline the external flow and avoid vortex induced vibrations. The structure of pipe is modeled as an Euler–Bernoulli beam and effects of internal fluid flow including flow-induced inertia, Coriolis and centrifugal forces and the follower force induced by the exhausting jet are taken into account. In addition, neglecting the compressibility effect and using the unsteady Wagner model, aerodynamic loading is determined as a distributed...

Free vibration of joined cylindrical–hemispherical FGM shells

    Abstract
Free vibration response of a joined shell system including cylindrical and spherical shells is analyzed in this research. It is assumed that the system of joined shell is made from a functionally graded material (FGM). Properties of the shells are assumed to be graded through the thickness. Both shells are unified in thickness. To capture the effects of through-the-thickness shear deformations and rotary inertias, first-order shear deformation theory of shells is used. The Donnell type of kinematic assumptions is adopted to establish the general equations of motion and the associated boundary and continuity conditions with the aid of Hamilton’s principle. The resulting system of equations is...

Multi-objective robust design optimization (MORDO) of an aeroelastic high-aspect-ratio wing

    Abstract
In this paper, a new approach for multi-objective robust optimization of flutter velocity and maximum displacement of the wing tip are investigated. The wing is under the influence of bending–torsion coupling and its design variables have different levels of uncertainty. In designing and optimizing wings with a high aspect ratio, the optimization process can be done in such a way to increase the flutter velocity, but this can increase the amplitude of the wing tip displacement to a point that leads to the wings damage and structural failure. Therefore, single-objective design optimization may lead to infeasible designs. Thus, for multi-objective optimization, modeling is based on the...

Eigenvectors of deformed Wigner random matrices

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Information Theory ; 18 November , 2020 Haddadi, F ; Amini, A ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2020
    Abstract
We investigate eigenvectors of rank-one deformations of random matrices B = A + θuu* in which A ∈ RN×N is a Wigner real symmetric random matrix, θ ∈ R+, and u is uniformly distributed on the unit sphere. It is well known that for θ > 1 the eigenvector associated with the largest eigenvalue of B closely estimates u asymptotically, while for θ < 1 the eigenvectors of B are uninformative about u. We examine O(1/N) correlation of eigenvectors with u before phase transition and show that eigenvectors with larger eigenvalue exhibit stronger alignment with deforming vector through an explicit inverse law 1/θ*-x with θ* := θ + 1/θ. This distribution function will be shown to be the ordinary...

    Abstract
Objective: Joint analysis of multi-subject brain imaging datasets has wide applications in biomedical engineering. In these datasets, some sources belong to all subjects (joint), a subset of subjects (partially-joint), or a single subject (individual). In this paper, this source model is referred to as joint/partially-joint/individual multiple datasets unidimensional (JpJI-MDU), and accordingly, a source extraction method is developed. Method: We present a deflation-based algorithm utilizing higher order cumulants to analyze the JpJI-MDU source model. The algorithm maximizes a cost function which leads to an eigenvalue problem solved with thin-SVD (singular value decomposition)...

Multichannel electrocardiogram decomposition using periodic component analysis

    Abstract
In this letter, we propose the application of the generalized eigenvalue decomposition for the decomposition of multichannel electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings. The proposed method uses a modified version of a previously presented measure of periodicity and a phase-wrapping of the RR-interval, for extracting the "most periodic" linear mixtures of a recorded dataset. It is shown that the method is an improved extension of conventional source separation techniques, specifically customized for ECG signals. The method is therefore of special interest for the decomposition and compression of multichannel ECG, and for the removal of maternal ECG artifacts from fetal ECG recordings. © 2006 IEEE

Convex Optimization and MIMO RADAR waveform design in the presence of clutter

    Abstract
Waveform design for Target identification and classification in MIMO radar systems has been studied in several recent works. While the previous works considered signal independent noise and found optimal signals for an e stimation algorithm, here we extend the results to the case where clutter is also present and then we will find the optimum waveform for several estimators differing in the assumptions on the given statistics. Several different approaches to the optimal waveform design are proposed, including minimizing the error of MMSE estimator, minimizing the maximum error of the covariance shaping least square (CSLS) estimator and minimizing the MSE error of scaled least square (SLS)...

A 3D BEM model for liquid sloshing in baffled tanks

    Abstract
The present work aims at developing a boundary element method to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of liquid sloshing in 3D baffled tanks with arbitrary geometries. Green's theorem is used with the governing equation of potential flow and the walls and free surface boundary conditions are applied. A zoning method is introduced to model arbitrary arrangements of baffles. By discretizing the flow boundaries to quadrilateral elements, the boundary integral equation is formulated into a general matrix eigenvalue problem. The governing equations are then reduced to a more efficient form that is merely represented in terms of the potential values of the free surface nodes, which...

Two-dimensional model of melt flows and interface instability in aluminum reduction cells

    Abstract
We derive a new non-linear two dimensional model for melt flows and interface instability in aluminum reduction cells. This model is based on non-linear de St. Venant shallow water equations and contains the main features of an aluminum reduction cell. In this model we consider linear friction terms but in a new way that has not been considered in previous works. Our results are in good agreement with the results of simulation of viscous flow. This model is applicable both in determination of melt flows in molten aluminum and cryolite layers and also in finding the extreme limit for stability of interfacial waves in an aluminum reduction cell
