    , Article Robotics and Computer-Integrated Manufacturing ; Volume 22, Issue 1 , 2006 , Pages 1-16 ; 07365845 (ISSN) Houshmand, M ; Jamshidnezhad, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
In this paper, we present an axiomatic modeling of lean production system design, using process variables (PVs). So far, we had developed a model for conceptual design of lean production systems by means of FR-DP relationships, the key characteristics of axiomatic design (AD) methodology, appeared in the proceedings of Second International Conference of Axiomatic Design. Albeit the model in question was thorough enough to be applied in various cases, its embedded abstract principles hamper straightforward applications and the required resources, tools, and techniques are not clarified. In AD terms, it lacks PVs created by mapping the design parameters (DPs) to the process domain to clarify...

    , Article Chemical Engineering Science ; Volume 226 , 2020 Eini, S ; Jhamb, S ; Sharifzadeh, M ; Rashtchian, D ; Kontogeorgis, G. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
The Atmospheric Lifetime (ALT) of a compound represents the potential for the atmospheric accumulation of chemicals. Chemicals with a long lifetime are more resistant to natural decomposition and remain in the environment for a longer period. Minimum Ignition Energy (MIE) is one of the most important properties when evaluating hazardous chemicals. Despite the significance of these environment and safety-related properties, currently, there are no group contribution (GC) models that enable their predictive modeling. The present research aims at filling this gap. To this end, experimental data were collected from literature and the GC model parameters were estimated using the weighted...

    Abstract
Nowadays, many manufacturing and service systems provide products and services to their customers in several consecutive stages of operations, in each of which one or more quality characteristics of interest are monitored. In these environments, the final quality in the last stage not only depends on the quality of the task performed in that stage but also is dependent on the quality of the products and services in intermediate stages as well as the design parameters in each stage. In this paper, a novel methodology based on the posterior preference approach is proposed to robustly optimize these multistage processes. In this methodology, a multi-response surface optimization problem is...

    Abstract
An LQ-based tracker is designed in this paper, using output feedback. For performing the design, at first, a structured controller is introduced for a set of equations. The controller is obtained by mini-mizing a cost function which has some penalties on both the system's inputs and states. After that, an estimator is introduced and combined with the controller to close the loop. Running the nonlinear simulation at the end verifies the superiority of Extended Kalman Estimator (EKF)to the Linear Kalman Estimator (LKF). © 2005 IEEE

    Abstract
This paper presents a low-order and accurate method for the design of FIR fractional delay (FD) filters with complex coefficients. This method employs least square technique in Hilbert space to approximate the ideal FD transfer function with a FIR filter and to calculate its coefficients. The main advantages of the resulting filter are: very good response at all frequencies compared to other FD filter design methods and a good method to create very small delay. Design examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of this new design approach. © World Scientific Publishing Company

    Abstract
In this paper, a tolerance allocation approach is proposed which attempts to select tolerances for individual dimensional variables of a product in a way that minimizes the cost while maintaining critical design requirements. The algorithm uses a reciprocal power cost-tolerance function which incorporates variable sensitivities computed in a DLM-based tolerance analysis technique. The process capabilities are applied as constraints and the genetic algorithm is used to find the optimum solution. The method is applied to a heavy duty brake problem and its results are presented. Elsevier BV  2005
    Abstract
A methodology is presented for optimization of the dynamic response of concentrically braced steel frames subjected to seismic excitation, based on the concept of uniform distribution of deformation. In order to obtain the optimum distribution of structural properties, an iterative optimization procedure has been adopted. In this approach, the structural properties are modified so that inefficient material is gradually shifted from strong to weak areas of a structure. This process is continued until a state of uniform deformation is achieved. It is shown that the seismic performance of such a structure is optimal, and behaves generally better than those designed by conventional methods. In...

    Abstract
A new approach for the design of two-stage Miller-compensated CMOS op amps is presented. The paper studies the basic relations between power consumption, unitygain bandwidth, the biasing region, technology parameters, and the external capacitive load. As a result, simple and efficient design guides are provided to achieve the minimum possible power consumption for the given specifications and for short-channel devices. It is shown that the conventional design procedures do not always result in minimum power op amps. The presented results are also verified by Spectre simulations

Functional process capability analysis in mechanical systems

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Vol. 73, issue. 5-8 , July , 2014 , p. 899-912 ; 02683768 Khodaygan, S ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Functional quality in the mechanical products is governed mainly by the degree of satisfaction of the design requirements, which itself depends on the variations in the effective variables. The functional parameters cannot be easily measured in mass production, and thus, are not usually considered as a direct inspection objective. Process capability indices are useful tools for evaluating the ability of a process to produce the dependent variables of a product that meet certain specifications. In this paper, the conventional process capability concept is extended to develop a computational tool for analysis of the functional quality of a mechanical product. Through defining new proper...

Optimization of biodiesel production from Iranian bitter almond oil using statistical approach

    , Article Waste and Biomass Valorization ; Volume 4, Issue 3 , September , 2013 , Pages 467-474 ; 18772641 (ISSN) Atapour, M ; Kariminia, H. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to optimize the process of biodiesel production from Iranian bitter almond oil. Design of experiments was performed by application of a 5-level-3-factor central composite design in order to study the effect of different factors on the product yield, biodiesel yield and biodiesel purity. These factors were reaction temperature (30-70°C), catalyst concentration (0.3-1.7% w/w) and methanol to oil molar ratio (4.4-13.6 mol/mol). A quadratic model was suggested for the prediction of the biodiesel yield. Analysis of variance revealed that the factors were significant on the production process of biodiesel. For each factor, the optimum value was...
