    Abstract
An upgraded integrated fixed-film activated sludge-oxic settling anoxic (IFAS-OSA) system is a new technology for reducing nutrients and excess sludge. The results showed that the average TN removal efficiency of the IFAS-OSA system was gradually increased up to 7.5%, while the PO4–3-P removal efficiency increased up-to 27%, compared with that of the IFAS system. The COD removal efficiency of the IFAS-OSA system was slightly increased up-to 5.4% and TSS removal efficiency increased up to 10.5% compared with the control system. Biomass yield coefficient (Yobs) in the IFAS and IFAS-OSA systems were 0.44 and 0.24 (gr MLSS/ gr COD). Hence, sludge production decreased by 45%. The average SVI was...

    Abstract
Ethylene glycol is an environmental pollutant, which exists in airport runoff and industrial waste. In this article, biodegradation of ethylene glycol in a two-chamber, batch-mode microbial fuel cell was investigated. Glucose and ethylene glycol at different concentrations were used as carbon and energy sources. Chemical oxygen demand removal in the range of 92-98% indicated that microbial fuel cell can be used for biodegradation of ethylene glycol. Ethylene glycol also improved power generation and the maximum power density was 5.72 mW/m2 (137.32 mW/m3), with respect to the same glucose and ethylene glycol concentrations (500 ppm)

    Abstract
Dyestuffs removal from industrial wastewater requires special advanced technologies, since dyes are usually difficult to remove by biological methods. In this study nanofiltration process was used for removal of different dyestuffs from solutions. The rate of dye removal by spiral wound nanofiltration membrane in film thin composite MWCO=90 Dalton, was evaluated for four classes of dyes acidic, disperse, reactive and direct in red and blue dyes medium. Dye absorbance was measured by spectrophotometric method (2120 Standard Method 1998). Effects of feed concentration, pressure and total dissolved solids concentration were also studied. Results showed that increasing dye concentration lead to...

    , Article International Journal of Global Warming ; Vol. 6, issue. 2-3 , 2014 , pp. 295-302 ; ISSN: 17582083 Safa, M ; Alemzadeh, I ; Vossoughi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A novel implementation of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) has been studied in this paper. It is utilised as combination of rotating biological contractor (RBC) and an external membrane for oily wastewater treatment. The performance of MBR was compared with the standalone RBC. The RBC used in this investigation is the same one combined with the membrane to form the MBR. Wastewater biodegradability has been evaluated by two factors: chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH). They are both compared together for different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) and petroleum pollution concentrations in RBC and MBR. The ratio of TPH to COD of molasses has been varied between 0.2 to...

Iron and aluminum were used as anode and cathode electrodes, respectively. Under the optimal conditions (pH 5, 60 min, 10 V), this treatment method led to 85% removal of COD and 78.5% removal of lignin. Furthermore, clear treated water with complete color removal was generated that suggests the application of electrocoagulation for industrial wastewater treatment, especially in pulp and...

The effect of influent COD and upward flow velocity on the behaviour of sulphate-reducing bacteria

    , Article Process Biochemistry ; Volume 40, Issue 7 , 2005 , Pages 2305-2310 ; 13595113 (ISSN) Shayegan, J ; Ghavipanjeh, F ; Mirjafari, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
The effect of up velocity and influent COD concentration on the activity of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in UASB reactors is discussed. To study these effects, four UASB reactors were built and utilized in parallel. Examinations were carried out in two different concentrations of molasses (500 mg COD/l and 1000 mg COD/l) and four different upward flow velocities. It was observed that at velocities greater than 1 m/h, SRB bacteria were easily washed out from the reactors due to lower density and lack of ability to form dense and firm granules. It was found that in low-strength wastewaters with a COD to sulphate ratio of 2, an upward velocity in the range of 1.5-2.5 m/h could be...

    Abstract
Lignocellulosic materials are recalcitrant to bioconversion, due to their rigid physiochemical structure. In this work, the effects of Fe2O3–TiO2 and NiO–TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) and FeCl3 and NiCl2 salts, on the anaerobic digestion (AD) of wheat straw have been investigated. For this purpose, metal oxide-TiO2 NPs were synthesized and fully characterized. Results showed that addition of 0.252 mg of NiO–TiO2/g total solids (TS) to batch assays resulted in increase of soluble chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 67% increase in volatile fatty acids (VFAs) concentration compared to control tests during the first 4 days of experiments. These results indicate that hydrolysis and acidogenesis rates...

MBBR and MBR Reactor Configuration for Better Performance

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology (Author) ; Borgheei, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) which are commonly understood as the combination of membrane filtration and biological treatment using activated sludge have several advantages, but membrane fouling reduces the membrane efficiency, permeability and lifetime. An alternative is replacing a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) with the activated sludge system which may reduce the effect of membrane fouling. The sludge produced in MBBRs has poor settling characteristics, therefore, their efficiency is limited by the sedimentation tank performance and they require a larger settling surface. The combination of moving bed biofilm reactors and membrane bioreactors can compensate for the drawbacks of both of...
