    , Article SPE Journal ; Volume 21, Issue 3 , 2016 , Pages 899-908 ; 1086055X (ISSN) Kahrobaei, S ; Mansoori Habibabadi, M ; Joosten, G. J. P ; Van Den Hof, P. M. J ; Jansen, J. D ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Classic identifiability analysis of flow barriers in incompressible single-phase flow reveals that it is not possible to identify the location and permeability of low-permeability barriers from production data (wellbore pressures and rates), and that only averaged reservoir properties in between wells can be identified. We extend the classic analysis by including compressibility effects. We use two approaches: a twin experiment with synthetic production data for use with a time-domain parameter-estimation technique, and a transfer-function formalism in the form of bilaterally coupled four-ports allowing for an analysis in the frequency domain. We investigate the identifiability, from noisy...

Ramp tracking in systems with nonminimum phase zeros: one-and-a-half integrator approach

    Abstract
In this paper, a simple fractional calculus-based control law is proposed for asymptotic tracking of ramp reference inputs in dynamical systems. Without need to add any zero to the loop transfer function, the proposed technique can guarantee asymptotic ramp tracking in plants having nonminimum phase zeros. The appropriate range for determining the parameters of the proposed control law is also specified. Moreover, the performance of the designed control system in tracking ramp reference inputs is illustrated by different numerical examples. © 2016 by ASME

The design of PIP controller for a thermal system with large time delay

    , Article World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology ; Volume 32 , 2009 , Pages 890-894 ; 2010376X (ISSN) Zareh, S. H ; Sarrafan, A ; Ghaemi Osgouie, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper will first describe predictor controllers when the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers are inactive for procedures that have large delay time (LDT) in transfer stage. Therefore in those states, the predictor controllers are better than the PID controllers, then compares three types of predictor controllers. The value of these controller's parameters are obtained by trial and error method, so here an effort has been made to obtain these parameters by Ziegler-Nichols method. Eventually in this paper Ziegler-Nichols method has been described and finally, a PIP controller has been designed for a thermal system, which circulates hot air to keep the temperature of a...

    Abstract
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) has a great potential to elicit clinically useful information from tissues due to its high axial and transversal resolution. In practice, an OCT setup cannot reach to its theoretical resolution due to imperfections of its components, which make its images blurry. The blurriness is different alongside regions of image; thus, they cannot be modeled by a unique point spread function (PSF). In this paper, we investigate the use of solid phantoms to estimate the PSF of each sub-region of imaging system. We then utilize Lucy-Richardson, Hybr and total variation (TV) based iterative deconvolution methods for mitigating occurred spatially variant blurriness. It is...

    Abstract
In recent years some approaches for robust control of plants with uncertainty in their poles have been suggested. Recently a new approach for tuning controllers has been introduced that can preserve phase margin in desirable value despite large variations in location of one of the poles and also it is able to provide required gain crossover frequency in the nominal case. In this paper by benefiting from this approach, a fractional order proportional derivative controller is introduced to control the plants with fractional order transfer function with uncertainty in their poles with order in the range (1, 2). Also, sufficient conditions on design specifications and plant parameters for...

    Abstract
Existence of uncertainties in the model of real-world plants can trouble the control system designer in achievement of control objectives in control of such plants. In modeling of these plants by benefiting from fractional order models, one of the most commonplace types of uncertainties is the order uncertainty. This paper deals with presenting a method for tuning fractional order PI (FOPI) controllers to be used in control of plants, modeled by fractional order transfer functions consisting of a fractional order pole in addition to a time delay, such that the control system is robust against order variations. By the proposed tuning method, values of phase margin and gain crossover frequency...

    Abstract
In this letter, a new approach to perform edge detection is presented using an all-dielectric complimentary metal-oxide-semiconductor-compatible metasurface. Our design is based on the guided-mode resonance, which provides a high quality factor resonance to make the edge detection experimentally realizable. The proposed structure is easy to fabricate, and it can be exploited for detection of edges in two dimensions due to its symmetry. In addition, a tradeoff between gain and the resolution of edge detection is discussed, which can be adjusted using appropriate design parameters. The proposed edge detector potentially can be used in ultrafast analog computing and image processing. ©...

    Abstract
This paper deals with the boundary control problem for a certain class of linear infinite-dimensional systems commonly known as fractional-delay systems. It is assumed that the systems under consideration are, in general, described by multi-valued transfer functions. In this paper, we restrict our studies to a class of multi-valued transfer functions which are defined on a Riemann surface with limited number of Riemann sheets where the origin is a branch point. The proposed controller design algorithm is based on shaping the sensitivity function. Contrary to many other methods which approximate the underlying infinite-dimensional system by a finite-dimensional one and then apply a classical...

    Abstract
In the event of a BLEVE, the overpressure wave can cause important effects over a certain area. Several thermodynamic assumptions have been proposed as the basis for developing methodologies to predict both the mechanical energy associated to such a wave and the peak overpressure. According to a recent comparative analysis, methods based on real gas behavior and adiabatic irreversible expansion assumptions can give a good estimation of this energy. In this communication, the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approach has been implemented to predict the BLEVE mechanical energy for the case of propane and butane. Temperature and vessel filling degree at failure have been considered as input...

Robust control of temperature during local hyperthermia of cancerous tumors

    , Article European Journal of Control ; Volume 52 , 2020 , Pages 67-77 Sayyaf, N ; Tavazoei, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Local hyperthermia is one of the most common methods to treat cancerous tumors, near the skin surface or natural body orifices. In order to study the problem of temperature control during local hyperthermia, firstly the heat conduction process during this therapy is analytically modeled by a time-delayed fractional-order transfer function, parametrized with respect to the body temperature. Since the body temperature may vary under the influence of patient physiological reaction and heat source, a robustness criterion is proposed to achieve the phase margin invariance despite of the temperature variations. Afterwards, an analytical method is proposed to tune stabilizing FO-PI/PD controllers...

    Abstract
Analog computing has emerged as a promising candidate for real-time and parallel continuous data processing. This article presents a reciprocal way for realizing asymmetric optical transfer functions (OTFs) in the reflection side of the on-axis processing channels. It is rigorously demonstrated that the presence of cross-polarization exciting normal polarizabilities (CPENPs) of a reciprocal metasurface circumvents the famous challenge of Green's function approach in implementation of on-axis reflective optical signal processing while providing dual computing channels under orthogonal polarizations. Following a comprehensive theoretical discussion and as a proof of concept, an all-dielectric...

    Abstract
In this paper, we introduce a new and advanced algorithm, namely, multiple-shift algorithm for code acquisition in optical code-division multiple access (CDMA) systems using unipolar optical orthogonal codes (OOCs) as signature sequences. We analyze the performance of the newly proposed algorithm and obtain a bound on its performance and show its advantage in reducing the mean time of synchronization when compared with other synchronization methods. The algorithm can be used with many different receiver structures, like active or passive correlator with or without hardlimiter(s). However, in this paper, we only consider the simple active correlator structure for further discussions and...

Multi-angle data acquisition to compensate transducer finite size in photoacoustic tomography

    Abstract
In photoacoustic tomography (PAT) systems, the tangential resolution decreases due to the finite size of the transducer as the off-center distance increases. To address this problem, we propose a multi-angle detection approach in which the transducer used for data acquisition rotates around its center (with specific angles) as well as around the scanning center. The angles are calculated based on the central frequency and diameter of the transducer and the radius of the region-of-interest (ROI). Simulations with point-like absorbers (for point-spread-function evaluation) and a vasculature phantom (for quality assessment), and experiments with ten 0.5 mm-diameter pencil leads and a leaf...

    Abstract
This article deals with analyzing the phase–frequency response of commande robuste d'ordre non-entier approximations of fractional-order differentiators. More precisely, an algebraic tight upper bound is derived for the phase of the approximations obtained from the commande robuste d'ordre non-entier method. Then, some applications for this achievement are discussed in the viewpoint of control systems analysis. These applications include usefulness of the obtained upper bound in stability preservation analysis during the commande robuste d'ordre non-entier–based approximation process and applicability of such a bound in finding necessary or sufficient conditions for test of positive...

Fourier photoacoustic microscope improved resolution on single-pixel imaging

    , Article Applied Optics ; Volume 61, Issue 5 , 2022 , Pages 1219-1228 ; 1559128X (ISSN) Mostafavi, S. M ; Amjadian, M ; Kavehvash, Z ; Shabany, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A new single-pixel Fourier photoacoustic microscopy (PAM), to the best of our knowledge, is proposed to improve the resolution and region of interest (ROI) of an acquired image. In the previous structure of single-pixel Fourier PAM, called spatially invariant resolution PAM (SIR-PAM), the lateral resolution and ROI are limited by the digital micromirror device (DMD) pixel size and the number of pixels. This limitation is overcome here through illuminating fixed angle interfering plane waves, changing the fringe frequency via varying the frequency of the laser source. Given that the fringe sinusoidal patterns here can be produced by two mirrors, the DMD usage can be omitted. In this way, the...

Investigating the Propagation Noise in PWRs via Coupled Neutronic and Thermal-Hydraulic Noise Calculations

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Malmir, Hessam (Author) ; Vosoughi, Naser (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In operating nuclear reactor core, fluctuations (deviations from normal operating conditions) are usually produced and propagated. These fluctuations can be due to control rod vibrations, inlet coolant temperature fluctuations, inlet coolant velocity fluctuations and so on. The induced neutron noise can be detected by in-core neutron detectors. Noise source identifications (such as the type, location and propagating velocity) as well as the calculation of the dynamical parameters (such as moderator temperature coefficient in PWRs and Decay Ratio in BWRs) are of the main applications of the neutron noise analysis in power reactors.
Investigating the propagation noise in PWRs (specifically...
