    Abstract
The effects of initial heat treatments, i.e. solution treating and over ageing, on deformation behavior of an age hardenable Al-Cu-Mg alloy, including mechanical properties and texture evolution, during multi-directional forging (MDF) are investigated. Hardness measurements, electron back scatter diffraction (EBSD) maps, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) are carried out. Mechanical behaviors of the alloy in terms of compressive stress and hardness test after MDF are investigated. In both solution treated and over-aged alloys, the compressive stress during MDF shows an increase up to the second pass, and by further straining the flow stress is decreased. However, shear and...

    Abstract
Abstract: The effect of annealing temperature on the properties of silver thin films has been investigated. Ag thin films have been deposited on glass substrates by electron beam coating, afterward subjected to annealing in a mixed ambient of air and oxygen at 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500°C for 3 h and then cooled slowly. The crystallographic structures of the Ag thin films were studied as a function of the annealing temperature. X‑ray diffraction (XRD) was used to estimate the crystallographic texture and grain size. All the films were found to have crystalline structure. The film microstructures were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The XRD and SEM results confirmed the...

    Abstract
During recent years, decay, fraction, corrosion and leakage of oil pipe lines have resulted in soil pollution. Gas oil is one of the main causes of soil pollution in different places. Soil and pollutant interaction results in varying soil geotechnical properties which causes shear strength, permeability, etc. to change drastically. After careful recognition of the problem, it should be encountered in a good manner. Therefore, comprehensive investigation regarding the effect of oil production on soil should be done. In this thesis, properties of combination of sand, kaolinite and pollutant in different situation such as different fine grain content, different relative compaction, and...

Evaluation the Effect of Thermo-Mechanical Parameters on Microstructure and Texture of Electrical Steel for Improving Magnetic Permeability

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadian, Peyman (Author) ; Akbarzadeh, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Dependence of some magnetic properties such as core loss and permeability on temper rolling was studied in this thesis. It is shown that with a proper temper rolling sharper textures are obtained in the electrical steel and the magnetic properties in the longitudinal and traverse directions are improved. By texture analysis, it is shown that because of temper rolling, shear strain on the surface of the sheet is the main factor for abnormal grain growth and shear texture formation on the surface. The result of formation of this texture is enhancement of the {100} intensity and reduction of the {111} intensity, leading to the improvement of the permeability. Temper rolling is always...

    Abstract
In content based image retrieval, low level features are used to find similar image. To do this, many system has been proposed by other people, in which in many of them, combination of features in the same time are used as a step of retrieval to increase accuracy. Feature combination are divied in two category: vector based and weight based which in weight based approach, features can get different weight, based on their importance and role in retrieval accuracy. Each image contain different partition, which some of them like background, base on their lower discrimintivity power, have lower importance. Based on our study, some image have powerfull color features and some of them have...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nowrozi, Danial (Author) ; Ramezanin, Rassul (Supervisor) ; Jamzad, Mansour (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
3D face modeling is currently a popular area in Computer Graphics and Computer Vision. Many techniques have been introduced for this purpose, such as using one or more cameras, 3D scanners, and many other systems of sophisticated hardware with related software. But the main goal is to find a good balance between visual reality and the cost of the system. In this thesis, reconstruction of a 3D human face from a pair of orthogonal views, front face and side face is studied. Unlike many other systems, facial feature points are obtained automatically from two photographs with the help of an Active shape model algorithm for the frontal face and an edge detection algorithm for side view of the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farhadi, Marzyieh (Author) ; Jamzad, Mansour (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) is a research area in computer vision. This area comprises of two main steps, low level feature extraction such as color, texture and shape extraction and also similarity measures for comparison of images. The challenge in this system is the existence semantic gap between the low level visual features and the high level image semantics. The aim of research in this field is to reduce this semantic gap. In this study the images are divided into regions using Meanshift method, for color segmentation and then moments of each region as color feature are calculated. Also for extracting texture the images are divided into regions using Jseg method, and then...

    Abstract
The research field of localization with high precision (precision of 10 micrometers) has greatly attracted attentions in recent years. Optical flow sensor is one of the inexpensive solutions for the localization of robot, which have been used in computer mice. The most important application of this thesis is to localize walking micro robot. The main challenge of previous research is the fact that sensor's precision is highly dependent on the surface texture. The aim of this research is to implement an appropriate algorithm on optical flow sensor in order to increase the robustness of sensor's precision to surface texture. In this regard, firstly experimental hardware has been designed and...

A robust multilevel segment description for multi-class object recognition

    , Article Machine Vision and Applications ; Vol. 26, issue. 1 , 2014 , pp. 15-30 ; ISSN: 0932-8092 Mostajabi, M ; Gholampour, I ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We present an attempt to improve the performance of multi-class image segmentation systems based on a multilevel description of segments. The multi-class image segmentation system used in this paper marks the segments in an image, describes the segments via multilevel feature vectors and passes the vectors to a multi-class object classifier. The focus of this paper is on the segment description section. We first propose a robust, scale-invariant texture feature set, named directional differences (DDs). This feature is designed by investigating the flaws of conventional texture features. The advantages of DDs are justified both analytically and experimentally. We have conducted several...

    Abstract
This paper is presenting the data on interactions between Fiber laser and shale. With this obvious goal that is dependent on improving the efficiency of laser power. The idea of selecting shale sample was because of variety of this rock type in Iranian oil and gas formations. In the experiment, a long pulsed laser beam was arranged to drill and propagate surfaces, in the opposite direction to the earth gravity, and it was used to drill hole from the top to the bottom of cylindrical Shale rock. The heat that been induced from the Fiber laser is absorbed in the direct surfaces in front and cause heat flux generation inside of rock texture. The specific heat transfer inside of shale sample can...

    , Article Physical Review E - Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics ; Volume 88, Issue 1 , 2013 ; 15393755 (ISSN) Seyednejad, S. R ; Mozaffari, M. R ; Ejtehadi, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Nematic shells of liquid crystals have been provided in microscales. Defect structures in the shells are very essential in the electro-optical applications of such colloidal objects. We have numerically minimized the free energy of symmetric and asymmetric spherical shells of the nematic liquid crystal. Considering degenerate planar anchoring on the surfaces and isotropic nematic elasticity, a variety of defect structures are observed by controlling or varying the thicknesses of the shell and its degree of asymmetry. In symmetric shells, our calculations show that boojums (bipolar) defects appear in thick shells and tetrahedral (baseball) defects in thin shells. In asymmetric shells, while...

Effects of thickness and texture on mechanical properties anisotropy of commercially pure titanium thin sheets

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 44 , February , 2013 , Pages 528-534 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Nasiri Abarbekoh, H ; Ekrami, A ; Ziaei Moayyed, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Simultaneous effects of thickness and texture on the anisotropy of mechanical properties and fracture behaviors of commercially pure titanium thin sheets were studied. The activation of different deformation systems, due to the split distribution of basal texture, led to mechanical properties anisotropy. The crack initiation and propagation energies, when the loading direction was parallel to the initial rolling direction, decreased with increasing thickness ranges from 0.25 to 1 mm. The changes of size, shape and distribution of dimples with increasing thickness confirmed the restriction of deformation systems and the development of triaxial stress state and plane-strain condition at the...

    Abstract
In this study Al2O3-SiC micro/nanocomposites have been fabricated by mixing alumina nanopowders and silicon carbide micro/nanopowders, followed by hot pressing at 1550, 1600, 1650 and 1700°C. The density, mechanical properties and fracture mode of Al2O3-SiC composites containing different volume fractions (2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, 10% and 15%) of micro/nanoscale SiC particles were investigated and compared with those of alumina. The relative density of composites could reach values very close to theoretical density, especially after sintering at 1700°C. However, relative density declined by increasing the SiC fraction at the same sintering temperature. The flexural strength of composites was best for...

CDSEG: Community detection for extracting dominant segments in color images

    , Article ISPA 2011 - 7th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis ; 2011 , Pages 177-182 ; 9789531841597 (ISBN) Amiri, S. H ; Abin, A.A ; Jamzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Segmentation plays an important role in the machine vision field. Extraction of dominant segments with large number of pixels is essential for some applications such as object detection. In this paper, a new approach is proposed for color image segmentation which uses ideas behind the social science and complex networks to find dominant segments. At first, we extract the color and texture information for each pixel of input image. A network that consists of some nodes and edges is constructed based on the extracted information. The idea of community detection in social networks is used to partition a color image into disjoint segments. Community detection means partitioning vertices of a...

    Abstract
Suggestion and application of a set of new features for on-line Partial Discharge (PD) monitoring, where there is no information about the type of PD is a challenging task for condition assessment of power equipments, such as a power transformer. This is looked for in this paper. So far, in past various techniques have been employed to develop a comprehensive PD monitoring system, however limited success has been achieved. One of the challenging issues in this field is the discovering of proper features capable of differentiating the involvement of possible types of PD sources. In order to examine the efficiency of the method established in this paper, which is based on application of a set...
