Steel plate shear walls having door openings with different arrangements of stiffeners

    , Article Advances in Structural Engineering ; Volume 22, Issue 10 , 2019 , Pages 2222-2235 ; 13694332 (ISSN) Rostami, P ; Mofid, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
As steel plate shear walls are typically used in the building central cores around the elevators and stairs, introduction of an opening as door seems to be inevitable in steel plate shear wall spans. Due to the weakening of the steel plate shear walls’ performance caused by this particular type of opening, the use of stiffeners around the opening is necessary. Nevertheless, introduction of stiffeners around all sides of the opening, which does continue to boundary elements, is very expensive and inefficient. Therefore, the study on the effect of different arrangements of stiffeners on the behavior of steel plate shear walls is significant. In this research, a number of steel plate shear...

Linear spatial stability analysis of particle-laden stratified shear layers

, Article Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering ; Volume 41, Issue 6 , 2019 ; 16785878 (ISSN) Khavasi, E ; Firoozabadi, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Verlag  2019
    Abstract
Hydrodynamic instabilities at the interface of stratified shear layers could occur in various modes. These instabilities have an important role in the mixing process. In this work, the linear stability analysis in spatial framework is used to study the stability characteristics of a particle-laden stratified two-layer flow. The effect of parameters such as velocity-to-density thickness ratio, bed slope, viscosity as well as particle size on the stability is considered. A simple iterative method applying the pseudospectral collocation method that employed Chebyshev polynomials is used to solve two coupled eigenvalue equations. Based on the results, the flow becomes stable for Richardson...

A pressure-based algorithm for internal compressible turbulent flows through a geometrical singularity

    , Article Numerical Heat Transfer, Part B: Fundamentals ; Volume 75, Issue 2 , 2019 , Pages 127-143 ; 10407790 (ISSN) Nouri Borujerdi, A ; Shafiei Ghazani, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Compressible turbulent flow through the abrupt enlargement in pipes is studied numerically by means of Advection Upstream Splitting Method (AUSM+-up). In low Mach numbers, a pressure correction equation of elliptic type is derived. This equation is compatible with the nature of governing equations and retrieves hyperbolic characteristic at higher Mach numbers. It is shown that the proposed numerical algorithm is computationally more efficient than the preconditioned density-based methods. The flow parameters such as reattachment length, pressure loss coefficient and wall shear stress are predicted. It is found that the loss coefficient of the compressible flow rises drastically with...

Serrated flow during inhomogeneous bending deformation of bulk metallic glasses: From self-organized critical to chaotic dynamics

    , Article Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids ; Volume 505 , 2019 , Pages 62-71 ; 00223093 (ISSN) Asadi Khanouki, M. T ; Tavakoli, R ; Aashuri, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this research, the dynamic behavior of serrated flows observed in the flexural stress-deflection curves during three-point bending (3 PB) tests on Zr-, Ti- and La-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) is statistically analyzed. Furthermore, the effect of strain rate on the serrations is studied. Based on the ductility of alloy, two distinct types of dynamics are detected. For more ductile alloys (Zr- and Ti-based BMGs) the stress drop magnitude of serrations obeys a power-law distribution of shear avalanches, which is an indicator of the self-organized critical (SOC) state in dynamics. In this case, the size of avalanches has no characteristic scale. In contrast, the size of serrations...

    Abstract
Usage of masonry system in many regions of the world like the Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East, India, and China is still significantly high, despite their highly energy and intensive emission. Most of the failures in this system are caused by low ductility of cement mortars. This type of failure could be seen in masonry structures in areas in east Iran after Kermanshah earthquake in 2017. The present study investigates the shear bond characteristics of structures constructed by masonry using green materials. “Taftan” natural pozzolan and two types of rice husk ash (RHA) were used in mix design of used mortars as green materials. In this investigation, a modified direct shear test...

    Abstract
In this study, the effect of through-thickness shear (TTS) stress has been examined on the prediction of forming limit diagrams (FLDs). Determination of the FLD is based on the Marciniak–Kuczynski (M–K) model with some modifications on the stress states for consideration of the TTS stress effects. For solving the equations, the Newton–Raphson method has been used. Furthermore, the Nakazima test has been simulated to investigate the stress state which occurs in the sheet during the test. Results showed that the formability of sheet metal could be better as the through-thickness stress increased. Also, implementation of TTS stress in the present model, the corresponding FLD has better...

    Abstract
Determination of soil shear modulus is one of the most controversial topics in unsaturated soil dynamics. Due to the fact that soils have an anisotropic response, the shear strength and stiffness of geological materials are greatly dependent on the principal stress direction and the intermediate principal stress. In this study, the effects of principal stress direction on shear modulus of unsaturated medium-dense sand have been investigated using cyclic hollow cylinder apparatus. Three series of stress-controlled cyclic tests with different fixed principal stress directions were carried out on the sand sample under different values of suction. Results reveal that shear modulus of unsaturated...

    Abstract
Considering the interaction of flexural moment and shear force in the steel frames with haunch or intermediate beam length and eccentrically braced frames with intermediate link length is a major concern of the structural analysis and design. This article contains two stages. In the first stage, to investigate the moment–shear interaction for the highly ductile steel I-sections, a study is carried out using finite element analysis and a simple and practical relationship is developed. In the second stage, a simple approach based on virtual work method for assemblage of interconnected rigid bodies is employed to consider collapse mechanisms with mixed hinges. Using this approach, the...

    Abstract
Shear lag phenomenon has long been taken into consideration in various structural codes; however, the AISC provisions have not proposed any specific equation to calculate the shear lag ratio in some cases such as fillet-welded connections of front-to-front double channel sections. Moreover, those equations and formulas proposed by structural codes are based on the studies that were conducted on riveted and bolted connections, and can be applied to single channel sections whilst using them for fillet-welded double channels would be extremely conservative due to the symmetrical shape and the fact that bending moments will not develop in the gusset plate, resulting in less stress concentration....

    Abstract
Shear connectors are essential elements in the design of steel-concrete composite systems. These connectors are utilized to prevent the occurrence of potential slips at the interface of steel and concrete. The two types of shear connectors which have been recently employed in construction projects are C- and L-shaped connectors. In the current study, the behavior of C and L-shaped angle shear connectors is investigated experimentally. For this purpose, eight push-out tests were composed and subjected to monotonic loading. The load-slip curves and failure modes have been determined. Also, the shear strength of the connectors has been compared with previously developed relationships. Two...

    Abstract
Due to shear layer at the interface of density current and ambient fluid, density current disturbs and entrains the surrounding fluid. Most existing analytical and numerical models for density current flows are based on the equations for single-phase flows. In this research, the density current has been modeled with two-phase flow model. The governing equations are continuity, x- momentum, and y- momentum equations for every fluid. The volume-of-fluid (VOF) interface tracking technique which uses a piecewise-linear interface calculation (PLIC) in each cell is used to determine the deformation of free surface in density current, numerically. Surface tension is implemented by the continuous...

A theory for coupled lithium insertion and viscoplastic flow in amorphous anode materials for Li-ion batteries

    , Article Mechanics of Materials ; Volume 152 , 2021 ; 01676636 (ISSN) Bagheri, A ; Arghavani, J ; Naghdabadi, R ; Brassart, L ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Amorphous lithium metal alloys (LixM, with M=Si, Ge, Sn, …) are attractive anode materials for lithium-ion batteries owing to their high energy-storage capacity and safety characteristics. However, repeated insertion of lithium often leads to chemo-mechanical degradation of the alloy, which can severely reduce the battery capacity and cycle life. Better understanding of the chemo-mechanical response of lithium alloys is needed to guide the design of damage-resistant anode microstructures. In this work, we propose a constitutive theory that couples large, viscoplastic deformations to the insertion and extraction of lithium in amorphous electrode materials. The theory relies on the concept of...

Free vibrations of functionally graded material cylindrical shell closed with two spherical caps

    Abstract
Free vibration response of a cylindrical shell closed with two hemispherical caps at the ends (hermit capsule) is analysed in this research. It is assumed that the system of joined shell is made from functionally graded materials (FGM). Properties of the shells are assumed to be graded through the thickness. Cylindrical and hemispherical shells are unified in thickness. To capture the effects of through-the-thickness shear deformations and rotary inertias, first order theory of shells is used. Donnell type of kinematic assumptions are adopted to establish the general equations of motion and the associated boundary and continuity conditions with the aid of Hamilton's principle. The resulting...

    Abstract
Nanofluids are widely used as the continuous phase during droplet formation in microsystems due to their impressive features such as excellent thermal, magnetic, and interfacial properties. Although it is well-known that nanofluids are susceptible to exhibit non-Newtonian behavior even at a low concentration of nanoparticles, effects of non-Newtonian behavior of nanofluids have not been studied on droplet formation thus far. In this study, oil-in-water droplet formation with a relatively high viscosity ratio of the immiscible phases was studied numerically in a T-junction microchannel. To inspect the non-Newtonian effects of aqueous nanofluids on droplet formation, empirical data on the...

    Abstract
The electrohydrodynamic (EHD) 3D printing technology is an Additive Manufacturing (AM) method that can be used in the manufacture of submicron-size structures. In this process, which is based on the formation of Taylor jet from a metallic ink, the investigation of particles reaction and aggregate formation in ink during printing is of great importance. In this paper, a new Finite Element model based on particle tracing in fluids is presented that couples the different physics that govern an EHD phenomenon. Vortex flow caused by boundary shear stress was observed in the ink jet; which was more like the Marangoni phenomenon in a stationary drop. By experimentally validating the presented model...

    Abstract
Many important public buildings have suffered significant damages due to terrorist attacks in the last few decades. This paper investigates the behavior of structures with steel plate shear wall lateral load resisting system under various blast loadings. A number of twenty steel frames with different heights and widths subjected to four different blast scenarios are modeled and analyzed in opensees software. The results showed that structures with steel plate shear wall systems subjected to blast loading have better behavior in high-rise structures than in low-rise structures in terms of drift and ductility ratio. The steel plate shear wall system exhibited shear-dominated,...

    Abstract
The dynamics of the nanofluid flow between two plates that are placed parallel to each other is of huge interest due to its numerous applications in different industries. Keeping in view the significance of such flow, investigation of the heat transfer in the Cu-H2O nanofluid is conducted between parallel rotating plates. For more significant results of the study, the squeezing effects are incorporated over the plates that are electrically conducting. The nondimensional flow model is then treated analytically (VPM), and the results are sketched against the preeminent flow parameters. The remarkable heat transfer in the nanofluid is noticed against the Eckert and Prandtl numbers, whereas the...
