    , Article Applied Energy ; Volume 300 , 2021 ; 03062619 (ISSN) Norouzi, M ; Aghaei, J ; Pirouzi, S ; Niknam, T ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Shafie khah, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
Electric spring (ES) as a novel concept in power electronics has been developed for the purpose of dealing with demand-side management. In this paper, to conquer the challenges imposed by intermittent nature of renewable energy sources (RESs) and other uncertainties for constructing a secure modern microgrid (MG), the hybrid distributed operation of ESs and electric vehicles (EVs) parking lot is suggested. The proposed approach is implemented in the context of a hybrid stochastic/robust optimization (HSRO) problem, where the stochastic programming based on unscented transformation (UT) method models the uncertainties associated with load, energy price, RESs, and availability of MG equipment....

    Abstract
This study aims to develop the Consistent Fish-Bone (CFB) simplified model for efficient estimation of Engineering Demand Parameters (EDPs) in irregular steel Moment Resisting Frames (steel-MRFs). To achieve this goal, some modifications based on the energy consistent approach have been applied to the Improved Fish-Bone (IFB) simplified model previously presented for reinforced concrete MRFs. These modifications include: 1) adding truss elements to the IFB model to consider the effect of flexural deformations and determining their areas by balancing the overturning moment and the strain energy due to the axial deformation of columns in the original steel-MRF with the overturning moment and...

Numerical simulation of cold and hot water injection into naturally fractured porous media using the extended–FEM and an equivalent continuum model

    , Article International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics ; Volume 46, Issue 3 , 2022 , Pages 617-655 ; 03639061 (ISSN) Mortazavi, S. M. S ; Pirmoradi, P ; Khoei, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Ltd  2022
    Abstract
In this paper, a computational technique is presented for the isothermal and non-isothermal water injection into naturally fractured oil reservoirs. A remarkable number of naturally fractured reservoirs contain relatively heavy oils that could not be extracted economically; hence, the thermal recovery methods are extensively used for such reservoirs. In this study, the effectiveness of hot water injection over cold (isothermal) water injection in oil production is quantified. The influence of long and short fractures and their alignments on oil recovery are discussed. To this end, a 2D model for two-phase fluid flow and heat transfer is presented. The medium is assumed to be partially...

    , Article Renewable Energy ; Volume 41 , 2012 , Pages 86-95 ; 09601481 (ISSN) Roshandel, R ; Arbabi, F ; Moghaddam, G. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell performance is directly related to the bipolar plate design and their channels pattern. Power enhancements can be achieved by optimal design of the type, size, or patterns of the channels. It has been realized that the bipolar plate design has significant role on reactant transport as well as water management in a PEM Fuel cell. Present work concentrates on improvements in the fuel cell performance by optimization of flow-field design and channels configurations. A three-dimensional, multi-component numerical model of flow distribution based on Navier-Stokes equations using individual computer code is presented. The simulation results showed excellent...

    , Article Transport in Porous Media ; Volume 91, Issue 3 , 2012 , Pages 973-998 ; 01693913 (ISSN) Mohammadi, S ; Masihi, M ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Many heavy oil reservoirs contain discontinuous shales which act as barriers or baffles to flow. However, there is a lack of fundamental understanding about how the shale geometrical characteristics affect the reservoir performance, especially during polymer flooding of heavy oils. In this study, a series of polymer injection processes have been performed on five-spot glass micromodels with different shale geometrical characteristics that are initially saturated with the heavy oil. The available geological characteristics from one of the Iranian oilfields were considered for the construction of the flow patterns by using a controlled-laser technology. Oil recoveries as a function of pore...

    , Article Renewable Energy ; Volume 36, Issue 12 , December , 2011 , Pages 3319-3331 ; 09601481 (ISSN) Tavakoli, B ; Roshandel, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Models play an important role in fuel cell design and development. One of the critical problems to overcome in the proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells is the water management. In this work a steady state, two-dimensional, isothermal model in a single PEM fuel cell using individual computational fluid dynamics code was presented. Special attention was devoted to the water transport through the membrane which is assumed to be combined effect of diffusion, electro-osmotic drag and convection. The effect of current density variation distribution on the water content (λ) in membrane/electrode assembly (MEA) was determined. In this work the membrane heat conductivity is considered as a...

Assessment of vapor extraction (VAPEX) process performance in naturally fractured reservoirs

    , Article Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering ; Volume 75, Issue 3-4 , January , 2011 , Pages 260-273 ; 09204105 (ISSN) Fatemi, S. M ; Kharrat, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The Vapour Assisted Petroleum Extraction (VAPEX) process, a newly developed Enhanced Heavy Oil Recovery process, is a promising EOR method for certain conventional non-fractured heavy oil sandstone reservoirs such as those in Canada, but its applicability on low permeable Naturally Fractured Reservoirs (NFR) such as those in the Middle East and Persian Gulf still remained as a question. Previous studies show that the foremost concern for VAPEX application in the case of NFR is the low non-economical production rates. The aim of the present work is to study the effect of fractures geometrical properties such as orientation (vertical or horizontal), density, spacing, location and networking on...

    , Article Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering ; Volume 31, Issue 5-6 , 2011 , Pages 792-804 ; 02677261 (ISSN) Seiphoori, A ; Mohsen Haeri, S ; Karimi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this study, the nonlinear seismic analysis of a typical three-dimensional concrete faced rockfill dam is reported. Three components of the Loma Prieta (Gilroy 1 station) earthquake acceleration time history are used as input excitation. The dam under study is considered as if it were located in a prismatic canyon with a trapezoidal cross-section. A nonlinear model for the rockfill material is used, and contact elements with Coulomb friction law are utilized at the slab-rockfill interface. Vertical joints in the face slab are also considered in the finite element model. A substructure method, in which the unbounded soil is modelled by the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM), is...

    , Article Iranian Journal of Science and Technology, Transaction B: Engineering ; Volume 34, Issue 6 , 2010 , Pages 619-635 ; 10286284 (ISSN) Siahi, M ; Porkar, S ; Abbaspour Tehrani Fard, A ; Poure, P ; Saadate, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Distribution systems management is becoming an increasingly complicated issue due to the introduction of new technologies, new energy trading strategies, and new deregulated environment. In the new deregulated energy market and considering the incentives coming from the technical and economical fields, it is reasonable to consider Distributed Generation (DG) as a viable option to solve the lacking electric power supply problem. This paper presents a mathematical distribution system planning model considering three planning options to system expansion and to meet the load growth requirements with a reasonable price as well as the system power quality problems. DG is introduced as an...

    Abstract
The first notable megawatt class wind turbine, which was the pioneer of improvement in the blade performance in large wind turbines, appeared in Vermont. Nowadays, modern wind turbines are using blades with multi-airfoils at different sections. In this study, in order to indicate the best airfoil profile for the optimum performance in different sections of a blade, five popular airfoils, including S8xx, FFA and AH series, were studied. On the large-scale profile, shear stress transport K–ω model was applied for the simulation of horizontal axis wind turbines for different wind speeds. The aerodynamic simulation was accomplished using computational fluid dynamic method, which in turn is based...

    Abstract
Land use regression (LUR) has not been applied thus far to ambient alkylbenzenes in highly polluted megacities. We advanced LUR models for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, p-xylene, m-xylene, o-xylene (BTEX), and total BTEX using measurement based estimates of annual means at 179 sites in Tehran megacity, Iran. Overall, 520 predictors were evaluated, such as The Weather Research and Forecasting Model meteorology predictions, emission inventory, and several new others. The final models with R2 values ranging from 0.64 for p-xylene to 0.70 for benzene were mainly driven by traffic-related variables but the proximity to sewage treatment plants was present in all models indicating a major local...

Theoretical modeling of actin-retrograde-flow passing clusters of confined T cell receptors

    , Article Mathematical Biosciences ; Volume 283 , 2017 , Pages 1-6 ; 00255564 (ISSN) Ghasemi V., A ; Firoozabadi, B ; Saidi, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Inc  2017
    Abstract
Through the activation process of T cells, actin filaments move from the cell periphery toward the cell center. The moving filaments engage with T cell receptors and thus contribute to transportation of the signaling molecules. To study the connection between the moving actin filaments and T cell receptors, an experiment available in the literature has measured filaments flow velocity passing over a region of confined clusters of receptors. It shows that flow velocity decreases in the proximity of the receptors, and then regains its normal value after traversing the region, suggesting a dissipative friction-like connection. In this work, we develop a minimal theoretical model to re-examine...

    Abstract
Microfluidic devices are beneficial in miniaturizing and multiplexing various cellular assays in a single platform. Chondrogenesis is known to pertain to chemical, topographical, and mechanical cues in the microenvironment. Mechanical cues themselves have numerous parameters such as strain magnitude, frequency, and stimulation time. Effects of different strain magnitudes on the chondrogenic differentiation of adult stem cells have not been explored thoroughly. Here, a new multilayer microdevice is presented for the unidirectional compressive stimulation of cells in a three-dimensional cell culture. Numerical simulations were performed to evaluate and optimize the design. Results showed a...

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 16, Issue 1 , 2009 , Pages 92-100 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Tiourad, M ; Mozafari, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Certain stratified charge divided chamber engines have a very small pre-chamber, equipped with a spark plug and a main chamber connected to the pre-chamber through nozzles, A theoretical model is presented in this research to predict ignition delay and initiation of combustion in the pre-chamber. It considers flame progress in the pre-chamber up to the point where the flame penetrates the main chamber through the connecting nozzles. Step by step calculations then continue in the main chamber and the mass fraction burned and the energy release rate are calculated. The process continues to the point where all the fuel is burned. At each step, due to a one degree rotation of the crank shaft,...

    Abstract
Overall turbine analysis requires large CPU time and computer memory, even in the present days. As a result, choosing an appropriate computational domain accompanied by a suitable boundary condition can dramatically reduce the time cost of computations. This work compares different geometries for numerical investigation of the 3D flow in the runner of a Francis turbine, and presents an optimum geometry with least computational effort and desirable numerical accuracy. The numerical results are validated with a GAMM Francis Turbine runner, which was used as a test case (GAMM workshop on 3D computation of incompressible internal flows, 1989) in which the geometry and detailed best efficiency...

Dynamic model for market-based capacity investment decision considering stochastic characteristic of wind power

    , Article Renewable Energy ; Volume 36, Issue 8 , August , 2011 , Pages 2205-2219 ; 09601481 (ISSN) Hasani Marzooni, M ; Hosseini, S. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This paper proposes a decentralized market-based model for long-term capacity investment decisions in a liberalized electricity market with significant wind power generation. In such an environment, investment and construction decisions are based on price signal feedbacks and imperfect foresight of future conditions in electricity market. System dynamics concepts are used to model structural characteristics of power market such as, long-term firms' behavior and relationships between variables, feedbacks and time delays. For conventional generation units, short-term price feedback for generation dispatching of forward market is implemented as well as long-term price expectation for...
