Assessing the EROI of Oil Production Through Life Cycle Analysis Approach

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Salehi, Mohammad (Author) ; Sabouhi, Yadollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
EROI is an indicator to analyse energy productivity of a resource. EROI of Sirri operation unit is assessed in two different levels. Direct energy consumption and total associated gas are used in first and second level respectively. Two important aspects of the present research are considering environmental externalities and estimation of EROI related to outputs of multi-production systems. Also a model is introduced to identify relationship between oil price and EROI. Energy Abatement Cost is used to include environmental externalities to EROI. Thre benchmarks – price, energy and exergy content and exergy cost – are considered as a basis to for estimating EROI. Using LCA for taking into...

Seismic Performance and Cost Assessment of Concrete Bridges Designed by Iranian Bridge Code

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Haghani Baei, Ali (Author) ; Esmaeil Purestekanchi, Homayoun (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance and seismic costs for pre-designed bridges according to the Iranian Bridge Code, which maps and details are available in Code 294. In order to evaluate performance, seismic costs of a structures are determined over its life cycle and these costs are compared eventually. Seismic costs are divided into two parts of the initial cost and life cycle cost of the structure. The initial costs depend on the cost of constructing the bridge, but life cycle costs are depends on seismic damage for structure and its users over the useful life of the bridge. These damages include the cost of maintenance of the bridge over its useful life and the...

ET method has been used for predicting response of models.in this investigation two conc. & steel models, with similar geometrical specification and different design results,...

Investment Valuation Model for Retrofit of Infrastructure under Uncertainty

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Asghari, Vahid (Author) ; Haj Kazem Kashani, Hamed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Infrastructure systems play a critical role in the economic and social activities of a community. Effective and continuous performance of these infrastructure systems is essential to the welfare and prosperity of the communities. Infrastructure systems comprise networks of interdependent assets that are built through a long and costly process. These assets are subject to a variety of factors that reduce the performance and reliability over time. These factors also increase the vulnerability of infrastructure assets in face of future probable hazards. In order to ensure the continuous and uninterrupted performance of infrastructure assets in post-hazard situations, asset managers should plan...

    Abstract
Hyperscale cloud data center (HCDC) (a.k.a., hyperscale data center) is the backbone of a wide variety of Internet services such as web-hosting, ecommerce, social networking, software as a service (SaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), application as a service (AaaS), and cloud computing.HCDC platforms consist of massive parallel processing, high utilization rate, and high volume storage that cost hundreds of million dollars. The increased demand for various Internet services and the subsequent dramatic growth in HCDC platforms, have caused an exponential increase in utilization of energy. With energy costs on the rise and global attention focused on carbon footprints, organizations are...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sahraee, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Farhadi, Fathollah (Supervisor) ; Bozorgmehri, Ramin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the present work, a comprehensive economic, environmental and exergy analysis and multi-objective optimization for world’s largest aromatic plant are provided and the interaction between decision variables in these criterions is discussed. In the first part, potentials of seven environmental features of the operational plant are quantified and normalized using life cycle assessment (LCA) for both process waste and utility environmental impacts. Exergy analysis (EA) is also used to determine the lowest eco-efficiency equipment. By choosing proper decision variables based on sensitivity analysis, LCA and EA results, optimization is performed to determine the best design variables based on...

Life Cycle Cost Analysis and Comparison Of Concrete Structures with and Without Shear Walls by Endurance Time Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Eslami Farkoosh, Ehsan (Author) ; Esmaeilpour Estekanchi, Homayun (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The actual value of structures should not be evaluated only based on initial cost, because failure cost and economical losses due to corrosion and natural hazards can be catastrophic. When a long life Performance of a structure is expected, life cycle cost analysis is the best way to assess and compare economic value of different design choices. The main purpose of this work is investigating the effect of shear walls in limit state cost and total cost . Results demonstrate that shear walls can reduce limit state cost up to 70 percent . Furthermore the influence of increasing thickness of shear walls and effect of reducing dead loads in total life cycle cost is discussed. It is shown that...

    The Economics of Stormwater BMPs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tavakoli, Sakineh (Author) ; Agha Mohammad Hossein Tajrishi, Massoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent decades, local, regional and national research programs have discovered stormwater runoff as the principal cause of water pollution in most urban areas. To solve urban stormwater runoff problems, we should use revisory measures. This is possible by using Best Management Practices (BMPs). BMPs are innovative technologies to reduce the movement of pollutants from land into surface or groundwaters, in order to protect water quality within natural and economic limitations.Three types of BMPs are discussed in this study; swale, bioretention systems and pond. They have different installation requirements, costs and pollutant removal efficiency. The main objective of this research is to...

In addition, the effects of fuel change and application of emission control methods on results of the life cycle and emergy analyses...

Value-based Seismic Performance Assessment of Common Masonry Facades in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khalili, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Esmaeil Purestekanchi, Homayoon (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Financial losses and casualties due to the collapse of the masonry facade and the infill walls of the building in recent earthquakes were motivators of this research to study seismic performance assessment of masonry facade. One of the main reasons for the collapse of buildings facade is their inadequate connection to the infill walls and structure frame. The mentioned item caused when earthquakes such as Kermanshah earthquake occurred, although a large number of buildings remained undamaged in terms of their structural, facades of these buildings collapsed. The details of the masonry facade, such as the metal wires mentioned in the codes, are not usually applied in Iran, and the connection...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Eshraghi, Alireza (Author) ; Miremadi, Iman (Supervisor) ; Vesal, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
New technology-based firms (NTBFs) are the driving force behind creating innovation and technology in countries and can play a crucial role in job creation and economic growth. These companies also facilitate technology transfer and strengthen the absorptive capacity of national innovation systems. Therefore, given the externalities of these companies, as well as their significant role in promoting innovation, governments around the world implement policies to support these firms. In Iran, the Vice President for Science and Technology has implemented policies to support NTBFs since 2013. Recently, a few studies have been carried out to evaluate these policies. However, the number of these...
