    , Article Materials Science and Engineering B: Solid-State Materials for Advanced Technology ; Volume 128, Issue 1-3 , 2006 , Pages 53-57 ; 09215107 (ISSN) Sadrnezhaad, S. K ; Vaezi, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
The effect of one of the surfactants such as Tiron, a compound based on the benzene molecule, on the morphology and chemical composition of zinc oxide deposits, produced from a zinc complex solution using two-stage chemical deposition (TSCD) technique, has been investigated. TSCD technique is a novel and simple chemical route for the deposition of ZnO film from aqueous solution. Zinc oxide films deposited on high purity alumina (HPA) as a substrate. The results show that the addition of Tiron changes the surface morphology and causes to form the fine-grained structure. With a dense and nodular-shape appearance, the film produced from the precursor of zinc complex-containing Tiron, is...

    , Article International Journal of Engineering Transactions C: Aspects ; Volume 34, Issue 6 , 2021 , Pages 1512-1522 ; 24237167 (ISSN) Gholami, P ; Kouchakzadeh, M. A ; Farsi, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
Materials and Energy Research Center  2021
    Abstract
The purpose of this study is to define a piecewise fatigue damage model (PFDM) for the prediction of damage in composite laminates under cyclic loading based on the continuum damage mechanics (CDM) model. Assuming that damage in fiber-reinforced plastic structures accumulates nonlinearly, a piecewise degradation growth function is defined and coupled with CDM and micromechanics approaches. The model divides the damage behavior of fiber, matrix, and fiber/matrix debonding at the ply scale, into three different stages. For generality, a fully multi-stage damage formulation on a single-ply level is employed. The unknown parameters of the PFDM are estimated according to obtained experimental...

    Abstract
Soil salinity threatens agricultural production worldwide by constraining plant growth and final crop yield. The early stages are most sensitive to salinity, in response to which salicylic acid (SA) has demonstrated beneficial effects in various plant species. Based on this, a maize (Zea mays L.) pot experiment was set up combining three levels of soil salinity (0, 6 and 12 dS m–1), obtained through NaCl addition, with three levels of SA (0, 300 and 600 mM), applied by leaf spraying 20 days after seedling emergence. Fifteen days later, the following traits were assessed: morphology (plant height, leaf number), growth (root and shoot dry weight), leaf water status [relative water content...

    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Second generation immigrant entrepreneurs (SGIEs) in developed economies have contributed to the emergence of new areas of business activity, especially in information technology, business services, and creative industries. An understanding of their growth strategies can shed light on the role of individual immigrants in the founding of potentially global firms competing with large multinational enterprises. Based on eleven case studies of SGIEs of Indian origin in the UK, our findings reveal that SGIEs are heterogeneous in their growth strategies contingent on their a) founding or succession context, and b) use of social ties. Founder SGIEs combining non-co-ethnic ties with non-family...

    , Article Separation and Purification Technology ; Volume 80, Issue 3 , August , 2011 , Pages 566-576 ; 13835866 (ISSN) Amiri, F ; Mousavi, S. M ; Yaghmaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Statistically based experimental designs were applied to screen and optimize the bioleaching of spent hydrocracking catalyst by Penicillium simplicissimum. Eleven factors were examined for their significance on bioleaching using a Plackett-Burman factorial design. Four significant variables (pulp density, sucrose, NaNO3, and yeast extract concentrations) were selected for the optimization studies. The combined effect of these variables on metal bioleaching was studied using a central composite design (CCD). Second-order polynomials were established to identify the relationship between the recovery percent of the metals and the four significant variables. The optimal values of the variables...

Investigating Starin Growth in Concentric Braces and Specify the Start Time of Failure in Section

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hayatbini, Kourosh (Author) ; Moghaddam, Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this Thesis, the behaviour of stell brace was studied in finite element models. In this section, a comparison between the results of these models and the results of experimental models which were done in past years, was carried out. It shows that these result is in good agreement with each other, Moreover it has been found that the primary cause of failure in the sample is local bucking and then change in the geometry of sample which will be followed by strain jumping in next cycles which shows the importance of local buckling due to the proximity of this event to strain jumps and can be accepted as braces limit state design. Finally, we try to predict the time of failure of samples with...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nikmaneshi, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Supervisor) ; Mozafari, Ali Asghar (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Search for effective methods for treating cancer requires a deep understanding of the tumor microenvironment and its role in cancerous tumor growth and progression. Mathematical modeling methods, which have fewer limitations than experimental methods for examining the microcirculation of cancer in detail, are suggested to answer many questions about the behavior and dynamics of cancerous tumors. In the present study, a multi-scale mathematical model of the three-dimensional tumor microenvironment, including molecular, cellular, and tissue scales, is presented. In this model, important aspects of tumor microenvironmental dynamics including tumor growth, angiogenesis, cancer metabolism, and...

Prediction of Stable Fatigue Crack Growth in Laser Peened 316L SS with Variable Beam Diameter and Pre-crack Length Using Artificial Neural Network

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ariyanfar, Alireza (Author) ; Farrahi, Gholamhossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Processing an alloy can enhance its mechanical properties. Based on repeated radiation of high-power pulsed laser beam, laser shock peening (LSP) is one way to impart favorable residual stress in an alloy and to enhance its damage tolerance property. Study of overlapping LSP is possible through the simulation of limited laser shots. Still, its computational cost is higher than that of a single shot. This research, primarily, is aimed at improving a methodology for reduction of computations in the study of an overlapping LSP and its impacts on fatigue crack growth. Addressing research gaps by utilizing the methodology is the secondary goal. The methodology consists of plastic strain...

A PEG construction of finite-length LDPC codes with low error floor

    , Article IEEE Communications Letters ; Volume 16, Issue 8 , 2012 , Pages 1288-1291 ; 10897798 (ISSN) Khazraie, S ; Asvadi, R ; Banihashemi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
The progressive-edge-growth (PEG) algorithm of Hu et al. is modified to improve the error floor performance of the constructed low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. To improve the error floor, the original PEG algorithm is equipped with an efficient algorithm to find the dominant elementary trapping sets (ETS's) that are added to the Tanner graph of the under-construction code by the addition of each variable node and its adjacent edges. The aim is to select the edges, among the candidates available at each step of the original PEG algorithm, that prevent the creation of dominant ETS's. The proposed method is applicable to both regular and irregular variable node degree distributions....

    Abstract
The morphological characteristics and electronic structure of the BaTiO 3 films grown by pulsed-laser deposition technique have been investigated. AFM and FE-SEM images reveal columnar growth characteristic of these films. Utilizing spectrophotometer, optical band gap of the films were reckoned to be about 3.76 eV. Both dα/dE and PL vs. E plots reveal numerous luminance states in the gap. Despite the presence of many luminance faults in the gap, cations manage to preserve their electronic states

Rapid growth of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles using ultrasonic irradiation

    , Article Ultrasonics Sonochemistry ; Volume 17, Issue 5 , Jun , 2010 , Pages 853-856 ; 13504177 (ISSN) Rouhani, P ; Taghavinia, N ; Rouhani, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
A rapid, environmental friendly and low-cost method to prepare hydroxyapatite nanoparticles is proposed. In this method, hydroxyapatite is produced in a sonicated pseudo-body solution. The sonication time was found effective in the formation of the crystalline phase of nanoparticles. In our experimental condition, 15 min sonication resulted in the most pure hydroxyapatite phase. Also it was shown that growth temperature is a crucial factor and hydroxyapatite crystallizes only at 37 °C. The particles formed by sonication were generally smaller and more spherical than those obtained without sonication. Sonication increased the hydroxyapatite crystal growth rate up to 5.5 times compared to...

Stabilization of nanostructured materials using fine inert ceramic particles

    , Article Ceramics International ; Volume 36, Issue 2 , 2010 , Pages 793-796 ; 02728842 (ISSN) Razavi Tousi, S. S ; Rahaei, M. B ; Abdi, M. S ; Sadrnezhaad, S. K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Modified versions of the Zener drag equation were obtained by evaluating a non-random distribution of incoherent ceramic particles in a nano-crystalline material. Analytical investigation of particle-boundary correlation indicates that the limiting grain size would be proportional to fV -1/3 for fV larger than 2.96%. The limiting grain size can be obtained by a combination of random and non-random Zener drag pressure in the case of volume fractions smaller than 2.96%

Feeder growth: a new method for automatic optimal feeder design in gravity casting processes

    , Article Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization ; Volume 39, Issue 5 , 2009 , Pages 519-530 ; 1615147X (ISSN) Tavakoli, R ; Davami, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The optimal feeder design in gravity casting processes is considered. The design problem is formulated as an additive, growth-like, evolutionary topology optimization problem. The initial design of the presented method is a casting part which is placed in a suitable environmental mould box. The method is composed of three stages: determining the feeder-neck connection point on the casting surface, constructing the feeder-neck and the feeder growth. During the growth stage, the feeder topology is changed gradually until satisfying some predefined criteria. The design of multiple feeders is also considered in this work. In the presented method, feeders are designed in a descending order of...

    Electrophoretic deposition of chitosan

    , Article Materials Letters ; Volume 63, Issue 26 , 2009 , Pages 2253-2256 ; 0167577X (ISSN) Simchi, A ; Pishbin, F ; Boccaccini, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of chitosan on metallic substrates was investigated. The electrophoretic mobility of the natural biopolymer in aqueous solution as a function of pH was studied. Because the protonation/deporotonation of chitosan is pH-dependent, the electrophoretic mobility and deposition rate is shown to increase with increasing pH from 2.9 to 4.1. The film growth rate is estimated to vary in the range 0.02-0.08 μm/s depending on the pH value. At high growth rates (> 0.05 μm/s), a porous film is obtained due to hydrogen entrapment. The EPD method developed here is applicable for the surface modification of metal implants by chitosan to develop novel bioactive coatings. ©...
