    , Article IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid ; Volume 3, Issue 1 , 2012 , Pages 174-182 ; 19493053 (ISSN) Azizi, S ; Dobakhshari, A. S ; Nezam Sarmadi, S. A ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Observability of bulk power transmission network by means of minimum number of phasor measurement units (PMUs), with the aid of the network topology, is a great challenge. This paper presents a novel equivalent integer linear programming method (EILPM) for the exhaustive search-based PMU placement. The state estimation implemented based on such a placement is completely linear, thereby eliminating drawbacks of the conventional SCADA-based state estimation. Additional constraints for observability preservation following single PMU or line outages can easily be implemented in the proposed EILPM. Furthermore, the limitation of communication channels is dealt with by translation of nonlinear...

    Abstract
Aggregating fine-granular data measurements from smart meters presents an opportunity for utility companies to learn about consumers' power consumption patterns. Several research studies have shown that power consumption patterns can reveal a range of information about consumers, such as how many people are in the home, the types of appliances they use, their eating and sleeping routines, and even the TV programs they watch. As we move toward liberalized energy markets, many different parties are interested in gaining access to such data, which has enormous economical, societal, and environmental benefits. However, the main concern is that many such beneficial uses of smart meter big data...

    , Article International Journal of Control ; 2015 ; 00207179 (ISSN) Mahdian Dehkordi, N ; Namvar, M ; Karimi, H ; Piya, P ; Karimi Ghartemani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Distributed generation (DG) units are often interfaced to the main grid using power electronic converters including voltage-source converters (VSCs). A VSC offers dc/ac power conversion, high controllability, and fast dynamic response. Because of nonlinearities, uncertainties, and system parameters’ changes involved in the nature of a grid-connected renewable DG system, conventional linear control methods cannot completely and efficiently address all control objectives. In this paper, a nonlinear adaptive control scheme based on adaptive backstepping strategy is presented to control the operation of a grid-connected renewable DG unit. As compared to the popular vector control technique, the...

    Abstract
This paper investigates the optimal operation of distribution feeder reconfiguration (DFR) strategy in the smart grids with high penetration of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) and correlated wind power generation. The increased utilization of PEVs in the system with stochastic volatile behavior along with the high penetration of renewable power sources such as wind turbines (WTs) can create new challenges in the system that will affect the DFR strategy greatly. In order to reach the most efficiency from the PEVs, the idea of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) is employed in this paper to make a bidirectional power flow (either charging/discharging or idle mode) strategy when providing the main charging...

    Abstract
As the number of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) increases, so might their issues and impacts on the power system performance. Toward eliminating the negative impacts of PEVs on the power system, installation of a charging controller at customers' homes, which addresses such issues and brings convenience for customers, is fundamentally required in the smart grid era. This paper develops a novel in-home PEV charge/discharge scheduling method that employs vehicle-to-home (V2H) capability to schedule level of charging/discharging at each time slot. In doing so, a household controller minimizes customer payment cost and reliability cost. The proposed charging algorithm not only responds to...

    Abstract
In this paper, a non-isothermal model of natural gas in pipelines including mass, momentum and energy balance equations are used as model equations for modeling and state estimation in gas pipeline systems. It is shown that differential equations describing the dynamic behavior of a high-pressure and long-distance gas transmission network (GTN) can be solved efficiently using the orthogonal collocation method. The issues corresponding to the presence of discontinuities in the dynamic model is substantially discussed and studied. The non-isothermal model of a GTN can experience discontinuities during transient operations, which causes challenges in simulation and state estimation in this...

    Abstract
Summary Increasing interest in smart grids exhibits its potential benefits for providing reliable, secure, efficient, environmental friendly and sustainable electricity from renewable energy resources. Here, reliability models of four types of renewable and hybrid distributed generation were developed. A fuzzy multi-objective function was suggested for simultaneous optimization of reliability, electricity generation cost, grid loss and voltage profile. This not only considers uncertainty of renewable energy resources but also provides smart generation dispatching. An efficient reliability index consisting of energy and interruption frequency terms was also defined. A novel hybrid heuristic...

    Abstract
The use of brushless doubly-fed induction generator has been recently proposed for wind turbines because of its variable speed operation with fractional size converter without the need to brush and slip ring. This paper introduces a control scheme to improve low voltage ride-through capability of doubly-fed induction generator considering grid code requirements. The proposed control strategy is based on analysis of flux linkages and back electromotive forces and intends to retain the control-winding current below the safety limit (typically 2pu) during severe voltage dips. The time-domain simulations validate effectiveness of the proposed scheme to protect the converter against failure as...

A proportional-resonant controller-based wireless control strategy with a reduced number of sensors for parallel-operated UPSs

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Volume 25, Issue 1 , 2010 , Pages 468-478 ; 08858977 (ISSN) Hasanzadeh, A ; Caglar Onar, O ; Mokhtari, H ; Khaligh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a novel droop method to control the power sharing of parallel uninterruptible-power-supply (UPS) systems is presented. In a clear-cut contrast to the previously reported works, the controller is a proportional-resonant controller which ensures good transient response and steady-state objectives. Furthermore, the need for sensing the output current for the power-sharing control is removed by implementing it in a software routine. This brings a less complicated and less expensive structure in which the number of feedback sensors is reduced from three to two. The droop paralleling strategy is based on the drop in the inverter output frequency and amplitude. The application of...

    Abstract
Minimization of operating costs is one of the most important objectives of power system operators. To achieve this goal, several optimization problems such as unit commitment and optimal power flow have been introduced. Historically, in these problems, the transmission network has been considered as a static system, i.e., the ability of transmission lines switching is not modeled. On the other hand, it has been shown that transmission line switching can significantly reduce operating costs by the means of topology modification. However, considering this capability, a large number of binary variables are introduced in the objective function, and as a consequence, the computation time will be...

    Abstract
Security constrained Preventive Maintenance (PM) scheduling is addressed as a crucial issue especially coping with new challenges of smart grids. Under the smart grid environment, Demand Response Resources (DRRs) are considered as virtual power plants in energy policy decisions which affect the controllability of power system ranging from short-term to long-term. Here, DRRs are regarded as a virtual resource of capacity reserve acquisition. Furthermore, under new environment, multifarious objectives will be imposed to PM scheduling which can be replicated into a single objective problem via a weighted approach with consideration of arbitrary weighting coefficients. In this paper, a new...

    Abstract
Demand response (DR) will play an essential role in smart grids by contributing to the operational flexibility requirement arising from the increased penetration of intermittent renewable generation. However, DR activation could be hampered in the absence of intelligent network management. Real-time thermal rating (RTTR) functions as a smart network management tool for unlocking the network capacities by allowing the network to safely operate during overload states. This paper offers an optimal residential DR approach integrated with RTTR to balance the hourly wind power production. The proposed framework is modeled from the perspective of an electrical aggregator that manages the population...
