    Simple and rapid determination of effective Murphree component efficiencies for operating absorbers, strippers and distillation columns filled with any type of trays

    Abstract
    Estimating efficiency of an operating column has to be distinguished from that of a column being designed. This crucial point has been totally overlooked in the literature. All the methods and models available for predicting the Murphree efficiencies of tray columns have been developed for the design case. They generate their own mass and heat transfer rates and empirical parameters rather than produce true transfer rates by using operating column (realistic) data, especially the specifications of outlet streams. In addition, most of these methods are limited in application and insufficient in accuracy, especially if applied outside the range of conditions under which they were formulated....

    Abstract
    In this work, steady state and dynamic performances of quaternary distillation column sequences designed based on steady state and dynamic cost functions have been investigated. To quantify the dynamic performance, product losses due to disturbances have been considered in the objective function. In addition, variations of operating costs such as utilities have been considered in the objective function. To separate a quaternary mixture into four products, 22 configurations have been used.     A brass vortextube is used to carry out a series of experiments. The main objective of the present research is to investigate the separation performances of a vortex tube (VT) for a hydrocarbon mixture. Examination is also applied to study the effects of nozzle intakes number and cold fraction on the gas species separation at specific inlet pressure 236.37 kPa in a VT with two gas mixtures (LPG as a hydrocarbon mixture and LPG-N2). A two-dimensional computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model simulation of a VT is presented.     A steady-state equilibrium-stage model based on MESH equations was proposed to simulate saline extractive distillation columns. The interaction parameters between each component of water-CaCl 2 and ethanol-water were obtained from mean ionic activity coefficients and vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) experimental data. Additionally, the interaction coefficients for the ethanol-CaCl 2 pair were fitted to experimental VLE data which were reported by Nishi for the ethanol-water-CaCl 2 system.
