    Abstract
A great deal of computational power and time is necessary for the simulation of highly heterogeneous fractured reservoirs with complicated geometry. Simulating such largescale complex reservoirs with both minimum time and maximum accuracy has consistently remained a topic of concern to reservoir simulation engineers worldwide. The currently used linear solvers in well-known commercial simulators that utilize classical methods such as Nested Factorization (NF) and Incomplete LU Factorization (ILU) as their preconditioners, all suffer from severe convergence problems in models with high heterogeneity and/or large number of non-neighbor connections. To overcome such problems, a novel Adaptive...

    , Article Advances in Water Resources ; Volume 146 , 2020 Rabbani, A ; Babaei, M ; Shams, R ; Wang, Y. D ; Chung, T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
DeePore2 is a deep learning workflow for rapid estimation of a wide range of porous material properties based on the binarized micro–tomography images. By combining naturally occurring porous textures we generated 17,700 semi–real 3–D micro–structures of porous geo–materials with size of 2563 voxels and 30 physical properties of each sample are calculated using physical simulations on the corresponding pore network models. Next, a designed feed–forward convolutional neural network (CNN) is trained based on the dataset to estimate several morphological, hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical characteristics of the porous material in a fraction of a second. In order to fine–tune the CNN design,...

A new procedure to determine equivalent strut of infill walls with openings for engineering applications

, Article Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers: Structures and Buildings ; Volume 173, Issue 8 , 2020 , Pages 585-601 Tabeshpour, M. R ; Noorifard, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    ICE Publishing  2020
    Abstract
In architecture, design of doors and windows for functional requirements, circulation, natural light and ventilation, aesthetics and view is inevitable. Parameters such as size, location and aspect ratio of the openings change the seismic behaviour of infilled frames. Ignoring these parameters in structural analysis may lead to substantial inaccuracy in predicting the lateral stiffness, strength and ductility of the frame. Despite numerous experimental and numerical studies on perforated infill walls in recent decades, the related provisions are rare in seismic codes and engineers tend not to use their results in analysis and design due to their complexity. The main purpose of this work was...

New half-pixel accuracy motion estimation algorithms for low bitrate video communications

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 15, Issue 6 , 2008 , Pages 507-516 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Mahdavi Nasab, H ; Kasaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2008
    Abstract
Fractional-pixel accuracy Motion Estimation (ME) has been shown to result in higher quality reconstructed image sequences in hybrid video coding systems. However, the higher quality is achieved by notably increased Motion Field (MF) bitrate and more complex computations. In this paper, new half-pixel block matching ME algorithms are proposed to improve the rate-distortion characteristics of low bitrate video communications. The proposed methods tend to decrease the required video bandwidth, while improving the motion compensation quality. The key idea is to put a deeper focus on the search origin of the ME process, based on center-bias characteristics of low bitrate video MFs. To employ the...

Saturated hydraulic conductivity of problematic soils measured by a newly developed low-compliance triaxial permeameter

    , Article Engineering Geology ; Volume 278 , 2020 Sadeghi, H ; AliPanahi, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
Research on the reliable characterization of saturated permeability has received great yet necessary attention globally. However, most studies were carried out on soils with a volumetric tendency being almost insensitive to water saturation or at least with this hidden assumption. This is clearly not the case when dealing with the two broad categories of problematic soils, including collapsible and expansive soils. As confirmed by previous research, at least one-fifth of the planet comprises of these soils with a relatively fair distribution. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to introduce a low-compliance double cell/burette permeameter to track all volumetric changes during the...

Simultaneous determination of gas–water relative permeability and capillary pressure from steady-state corefloods

    , Article Journal of Hydrology ; Volume 598 , 2021 ; 00221694 (ISSN) Borazjani, S ; Hemmati, N ; Behr, A ; Genolet, L ; Mahani, H ; Zeinijahromi, A ; Bedrikovetsky, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2021
    Abstract
For traditional calculations of relative phase permeability (Kr) from coreflood Steady-State Test (SST), the capillary pressure (Pc) is required. Usually, Pc is determined from a separate test, using a centrifuge or porous-plate methods. However, during SSTs, water cut and pressure drop are measured during the transition period between two sequential fractional-flow steps. We developed a novel method for simultaneous determination of Kr and Pc from SST by using both steady-state and transient data. In the proposed method, the transition data on the pressure drop across the core are used instead of the traditionally utilised Pc-curve. The main idea is that the stabilisation period during each...

Analysis of well testing results for single phase flow in reservoirs with percolation structure

    , Article Oil and Gas Science and Technology ; Volume 76 , 2021 ; 12944475 (ISSN) Shahrian, E ; Masihi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Editions Technip  2021
    Abstract
Constructing an accurate geological model of the reservoir is a preliminary to make any reliable prediction of a reservoir's performance. Afterward, one needs to simulate the flow to predict the reservoir's dynamic behaviour. This process usually is associated with high computational costs. Therefore, alternative methods such as the percolation approach for rapid estimation of reservoir efficiency are quite desirable. This study tries to address the Well Testing (WT) interpretation of heterogeneous reservoirs, constructed from two extreme permeabilities, 0 and K. In particular, we simulated a drawdown test on typical site percolation mediums, occupied to fraction "p"at a constant rate Q/h,...

A probabilistic climate change assessment for Europe

    , Article International Journal of Climatology ; Volume 42, Issue 13 , 2022 , Pages 6699-6715 ; 08998418 (ISSN) Moghim, S ; Teuling, A. J ; Uijlenhoet, R ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Globally, the impacts of climate change can vary across different regions. This study uses a probability framework to evaluate recent historical (1976–2016) and near-future projected (until 2049) climate change across Europe using Climate Research Unit and ensemble climate model datasets (under RCPs 2.6 and 8.5). A historical assessment shows that although the east and west of the domain experienced the largest and smallest increase in temperature, changes in precipitation are not as smooth as temperature. Results indicate that the maximum changes between distributions of the variables (temperature and precipitation) mainly occur at extreme percentiles (e.g., 10% and 90%). A group analysis...

    Abstract
Mobile phones are known as the most widely used electronic instruments, and an enormous number of discarded mobile phones are generated. The present work used a pure culture of Penicillium simplicissimum in a bubble column bioreactor to extract Cu and Ni from mobile phone printed circuit boards (MPPCBs) waste. Molasses was used as an efficient carbon source to enhance bioleaching efficiency and increase the cost benefits. The adaptation phase was done at Erlenmeyer flasks to reach 40 g/L of MPPCBs powder. The most significant parameters, including the mass of MPPCBs powder, aeration, molasses concentration, and their interaction, were optimized in order to leach the maximum possible Cu and...

Mapping surface temperature in a hyper-saline lake and investigating the effect of temperature distribution on the lake evaporation

    , Article Remote Sensing of Environment ; Volume 136 , 2013 , Pages 374-385 ; 00344257 (ISSN) Sima, S ; Ahmadalipour, A ; Tajrishy, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Remote sensing is an effective tool for capturing spatial and temporal variations of water surface temperature (WST) in large lakes. The WST of Urmia Lake in northwestern Iran was examined from 2007 to 2010, using MODIS land surface temperature (LST) products. Spatial and temporal (diurnal, monthly, seasonal and inter-annual) variations of Urmia Lake WST were also investigated. Results indicate that the MODIS-derived WSTs are in a good agreement with the in situ data (R2=0.92 and bias=-0.27). Spatial analysis of WST revealed that there are three thermal zones along the lake: the shallow region in barriers of the causeway, islands and the shoreline; the south part; and the deep north parts....

Analytical approach to dynamic and vibration analysis of a spherical ball under contact stress

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 18, Issue 6 , 2011 , Pages 1306-1312 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Aram, A ; Hosseinzadeh, A ; Foumani, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This paper presents a nonlinear model to illustrate the effect of contact stress in the vibration behavior of mechanical components, especially rotating systems. The problem is considered in the case of the vertical vibration of a sphere on a plate. The Hertzian contact theory is used to obtain the relationship between contact force and the deflection of the mass center of the sphere. Modeling the system by a mass and a nonlinear spring, the vibration equation of the mass center of the sphere is derived. The method of LindstedtPoincar is implemented to solve the equation of motion, and obtain vibration characteristics under a compressive preload. The dependency of frequency on several...

    Abstract
This paper investigates the applicability of frequency-domain system identification technique to achieve the equivalent linear dynamics of an autonomous underwater vehicle for control design purposes. Frequency response analysis is performed on the nonlinear and coupled dynamics of the vehicle, utilizing the CIFER® software to extract a reduced-order model in the form of equivalent transfer functions. Advanced features such as chirp-z transform, composite window optimization, and conditioning are employed to achieve high quality and accurate frequency responses. A particular frequency-sweep input is implemented to the nonlinear simulation model to achieve pole-zero transfer functions for yaw...

Simulation of a density current turbulent flow employing different RANS models: a comparison study

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 16, Issue 1 , 2009 , Pages 53-63 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Mehdizadeh, A ; Firoozabadi, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The accuracy of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence models to predict the behavior of 2-D density currents has been examined. In this work, a steady density current is simulated by the k - ε, k - ε RNG, two-layer k - ε and modified v̄2 - f model, all of which are compared with the experimental data. Density currents, with a uniform velocity and concentration, enter a channel via a sluice gate into a lighter ambient fluid and move forward down-slope. The eddy-viscosity concept cannot accurately simulate this flow because of two stress production structures found within it. Results show that all isotropic models have a weak outcome on this current, but by improving the ability of...

The interaction between temperature and streamflow was considered in the study. Two statistical indexes, mean square error (MSE) and coefficient of determination (R2), were used to evaluate the performances of the...

A new multiphase and dynamic asphaltene deposition tool (MAD-ADEPT) to predict the deposition of asphaltene particles on tubing wall

    , Article Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering ; Volume 195 , 2020 Naseri, S ; Jamshidi, S ; Taghikhani, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
As expounded, the precipitation and deposition of asphaltene particles in pipelines has been proved to be the most challenging flow assurance problem due to its unknown and complex behaviors. In this work, a new multicomponent, multiphase and dynamic tool was developed to model the aggregation and deposition of asphaltene particles in a bulk medium. The multiphase and dynamic asphaltene deposition tool, shortened as MAD-ADEPT is, in fact, a modified version of the previously developed ADEPT. The new tool was developed to make the asphaltene deposition and aggregation concepts in oil production wells more predictable. To tackle the complexity of the asphaltene problem, a bespoke algorithm was...

    , Article Geothermics ; Volume 101 , 2022 ; 03756505 (ISSN) Bahmani, M.H ; Hakkaki Fard, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Horizontal Ground Heat Exchangers (HGHE) as a means of exploiting geothermal energy has come to the fore for a few decades. Various analytical and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods have been proposed to predict the performance of the HGHEs. The available analytical approaches are fast; however, they are based on various simplifications and assumptions, affecting their accuracy. On the other hand, CFD methods are more accurate, but their computational cost is a burden. Therefore there is an acute need for an accurate and fast method for predicting the long-term performance of HGHEs. To this aim, this study puts forward a novel hybrid analytical-numerical model for predicting the...
