    Abstract
Application of the network equivalent concept for external system representation for power system transient analysis is well known. However, the challenge to utilize an equivalent network, approximated by a rational function, is to guarantee the passivity of the corresponding model. In this regard, special techniques are required to enforce the passivity of the equivalent model through a post processing approach that minimizes its impact on the original model characteristics. In this paper, the passivity is enforced by expressing the problem in terms of a convex optimization problem that guarantees the global optimal solution. The convex optimization problem is efficiently solved by recently...

    Abstract
Developing an accurate network equivalent to reduce the computational time of an electromagnetic transient study has been the major task of many researches in the past two decades. However, still no accurate wide band equivalent for an asymmetrical network is addressed in the literature. This paper presents a Hybrid equivalent for the external system, assuming that it contains an asymmetrical transmission system at the terminal of this external system. The proposed method is based on the introduction of an asymmetrical transmission system in the model through application of a real constant transformation matrix in the subsystem and dealing with its asymmetrical effects in the external...

    Abstract
In this paper, a new method for the calculation of electromagnetic fields around a transmission line subjected to a lightning strike is described and discussed. The electric fields and magnetic fields are presented graphically as a function of spatial coordinate, as a function of time and as a function of both. It is believed that this exact solution have not been published before. First, a double exponential lightning surge current is injected into a transmission line. Once The temporal variations of current is known, then electric and magnetic fields can be calculated by using the field expressions for electric dipoles over infinitely conducting ground. As the calculation was done for each...

    Abstract
To make the energy market reliable and transactions deliverable, transmission owners must provide required ancillary services that are critical to ensure transmission open access, and to maintain an acceptable level of power system security. Spinning reserve is one of the most important ancillary services required to maintain system reliability in case of occurring a contingency. By definition, spinning reserve is the unloaded section of synchronized generation that is able to respond immediately to serve load. Studies indicate that spinning reserve requirements have significant impacts on the energy market. A new spinning reserve market structure is proposed in this paper to best utilize...

    Abstract
Application of the network equivalent concept for external system representation in electromagnetic transient studies is well known. However, the challenge in application of an equivalent model, approximated by rational functions, is to guarantee passivity of the corresponding model. Therefore, there is a need to enforce passivity of the equivalent model. In this paper, the passivity enforcement problem is first formulated as a quadratic programming (QP) problem, and then solved based on an efficient implementation, using an infeasible-interior-point primal-dual method. An application of this method for passivity enforcement of a six-port admittance model (with large passivity violations)...

    Abstract
Cost is one of the most essential factors that influence many decisions taken in the distribution system planning. In general, cost can be defined as everything that should be sacrificed to gain the desired results. This paper proposes a new two-stage methodology for distributed generation (DG) placement as an attractive option for distribution system planner. This method aims to minimize cost and maximize total system benefit (TSB). Optimal placement and size are obtained from total cost minimization mathematical problem which is solved in the first stage. For each DG cost characteristics and for each investment payback time, there is an optimal location and size. Then the optimal DG...

    , Article IEEE AFRICON Conference, 23 September 2009 through 25 September 2009 ; 2009 ; 9781424439195 (ISBN) Porkar, S ; Poure, P ; Saadate, S ; Abbaspour Tehrani Fard, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
One of the major limitations of the multilevel converters is the voltage unbalance between different levels. The techniques to balance the voltage between the different levels normally involve voltage clamping or capacitor charge and discharge control. However, traditional Flying Capacitor Converter (FCC) may be quite limited by the voltage unbalance of flying-capacitors that is the most serious problem. This paper describes operating principles of a new softswitching seven-level converter topology based on FCC for self-voltage stabilization and balancing. By adding power electronic devices to the traditional FCC topology, the proposed topology regulates the DC bus voltage and balances the...

    Abstract
The main goal of this paper is to obtain the optimal Distributed Generation (DG) investments as well as purchase additional power from Transmission Companies (TRANSCOs). This new model and software package have been executed in two different cases depending if system voltage profiles are in their permissible margin or not; in each case, three different scenarios are...

An adaptive sampling technique to correct large passivity violations

    Abstract
Rational functions for approximation of the admittance matrix elements of a linear power system/component are used to increase the computational efficiency for the analysis of electromagnetic transients. The challenge in this regard is passivity enforcement of the resultant model to guarantee numerical stability of the analyses. The main cause of passivity violation of the equivalent model of a passive system/ component, in a specific frequency region, is the selection of unsuitable and/or insufficient number of frequency samples for fitting. The more severe the passivity violations are, the more effort is required to enforce passivity. This paper presents an adaptive sampling technique for...

    Abstract
The size and complexity of modern power systems necessitate the use of Frequency Dependent Network Equivalents (FDNE) for part of the system. In order to give realistic simulation the frequency response of the equivalent must mach that of the system it represents. In this paper a method for developing FDNE is presented and demonstrated by approximation its admittance matrix Y by rational function in the frequency domain based on vector fitting method. The developed FDNE is accurate and efficient. An example showing the accuracy and efficiency of the developed FDNE when used to reduce a radial network is presented. ©2006 IEEE

Passivity enforcement via residues perturbation for admittance representation of power system components

    Abstract
Employing an admittance representation in the form of a black box model approximated by rational functions for linear power system components or network equivalents to be included in electromagnetic transient studies is a well-known method which improves calculation efficiency. All of the methods that have been proposed to solve the rational approximation problem have made efforts to overcome the problem of preserving the passivity of the final model. Passivity is a vital property, since a non-passive model may lead to an unstable transient simulation in the time domain. In this paper a post-processing technique for passivity enforcement through an iterative process for the detection and...

    Abstract
Network equivalents can be used to represent parts of a power system to reduce the complexity and the computation time during the simulation of electromagnetic transients. The goal is to simplify the representation while preserving the accuracy of transients in the remainder. In this work a method is developed for construction of single and multi-port Frequency Dependent Network Equivalent (FNDE). In this equivalent model the input admittance matrix is approximated by a rational function in the frequency domain. This method is developed for both single and multi phase systems. Several examples showing the accuracy and efficiency of the developed FDNE is presented

Distribution System Planning Implementing Distributed Generation

    Abstract
In the recent years, there is a worldwide wave of considerable changes in power industries, including the operation of distribution networks. Deregulation, open market, alternative and local energy sources, new energy conversion technologies and other future development of electrical power systems must pursue different goals. Also growth in the demand and change in load patterns may create major bottlenecks in the delivery of electric energy. This would cause distribution system stress.Furthermore, in competitive electricity markets, operators determine the electricity price for specific intervals during a day, taking into account various economical and operational factors. Traditionally, a...

    Abstract
Learning a foreign language encompasses a process of trial and error that can lead to the progression of the learner's interlanguage, meaning that the learners make use of their language knowledge that receives feedback and brings about progress through diagnosis of the problems and being corrected by the teacher. Therefore, there exists a need to analyze the underlying reasons causing the students to remain taciturn with a low willingness to communicate (WTC) during a language class. There has been much work done investigating the role of the learner's stable personal characteristics (traits) along with their situational changes at a specific time (states) that influence the student's...
