, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahiminejad, Mohammad (Author) ; Moosavi, Ali (Supervisor) ; Nouri Borujerdi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Water treatment from industrial and domestic pollutants is one of the most important issues in recent decades. In the present research, simulation of water purification using single-layer graphene membrane were studied. The effects of nanopores diameter, applied pressure, concentration of contaminant ions, and functional groups on the amount of filtered water and ion rejection through the membrane were quantified. Contaminant ions including Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, and Cl- were dissolved in water. Based on the results, by increasing the pore diameter and applied pressure, more water would pass through the membrane. Also it was concluded that pores with functional groups have better performance...

Another method for microalgae recovery is membrane treatment. This study is focusing on using both methods separately and simultaneously. To achieve this, the removal of Chlorella Vulgaris, a fresh water microalgae, was used in experiments. In first phase the experiments were solely on electrocoagulation and the effect of several parameters including current density, electrocoagulation duration,...

Coating of Sewage Pipes with Appropriate Nanomaterials Aimed at Preventing Biological Growth (Algae+Biofilm)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nezameddin, Mahsa Sadat (Author) ; Borghei, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Ghasemi, Shahnaz (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Biological layers are one of the main problems related to water transfer with pipe lines which are formed through time in the inner surface of the pipes by the water nutrients. Hence, the inner surfaces in the pipe lines and water refineries should be made in order not to let these biological layers to be made. The reason is that when the biofilm is formed on these surfaces, the traversing water is polluted. Dredging of these pipes is not only necessary in most of the countries in the world and needs huge amounts of water but is also very complex and expensive. In this research, nanomaterials, namely ZnO, T〖iO〗_2،S〖iO〗_2 have been used to cover the surface of concrete and steel pipes (The...

The Application of Nano Scale Iron Particle in Water Treatment

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nikroo, Razieh (Author) ; Alem zadeh, Iran (Supervisor) ; Vosoughi, Manouchehr (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Chlorinated hydrocarbons such as trichloroethylene form a kind of dense non-aqueous phase liquid contaminants in groundwater and soil that are so difficult to remediate. In recent years, many field research has been demonstrated application of nano scale zero valent iron can degrade these contaminants.
In this research, nZVI particle synthesized by liquid phase reduction method. Nickel (25%wt ) has been added to increase the reduction rate and also reduce intermediate pollutions. However, the combination of a noble metal to nZVI, leads to more rapid oxidation and tendency to agglomeration. So nZVI particles coated by applying a water soluble-starch solution (0.4%wt) as a stabilizer. The...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mortazavi, Vahid Reza (Author) ; Mousavi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Fresh water has always been one of the basic needs of human. Thus using different methods for water purification becomes more important in recent years. In classic methods such as distillation chamber and thermal method, water flux was always low and salt rejection wasn’t satisfactory. So investigating new methods such as nanofiltration becomes more important. This method has high efficiency and good water flux in compare with old methods. One of the useful materials in nanofiltration is grapheme oxide (GO). GO sheets make an array of nanochannels and this membrane improves filtration and water flux. Different parameters affect water flux and salt rejection in this membrane. Restructuring...

Feasibility of Providing Media for Multi-Media Filter Bed in Treatment

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shojae Ghias, Masoumeh (Author) ; Hashemian, Jamaleddin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In Iran, the technical issues are not considered when changing or replacing the bed of filter. In this regard, less attention is paid for the properties of the materials (e.g. shape, aggregation, effective size and uniform coefficient of grains, etc.) used in the replaced bed of filter. Therefore, the performance of the replaced filter is not good from treated water quality, water production, and backwash interval points of view. In this project, Light Expanded Clay Aggregate, LECA, was chosen as a suitable material to be used in the bed of filter because of its favorable grain shape. The performance of LECA has been examined in both “Single- Media Filter” and “Dual-Media Filter” for...

The particles can be collected with an applied magnetic field. In this study different kinds of magnetic fields are applied and effect of different parameters, such as particle diameter, Reynolds number and magnetic field are considered. By increasing particle diameter and magnetic filed strength, the absorption efficiency increases. But by increasing Reynolds number absorption efficiency decreases. The particle with...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khan Sanami, Mehran (Author) ; Esfandiar, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Poly vinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as a fluorine polymer with acceptable thermal, chemical and physical property attractive create attention in membrane technology for water treatment application. However, with differential surface free energy between PVDF and water (∆G_s=30 mJ/m^2) PVDF polymer is divided as a hydrophobic materials, that is one of the basic problem for PVDF polymer. Due to its hydrophobicity the water molecules repulsion away from hydrophobic PVDF membrane surface as a spontaneous process with an entropy increasing and therefore pollutant molecules with hydrophobic functional group have tendency to adsorb onto membrane surface and dominate the boundary layer. In recent years...

Possible mechanisms of CuO/g-C3N4 formation and PEC performance improvement were examined via XRD, FTIR, FESEM, XPS, UV-Vis, and PL. Controlled amounts of urea determined the morphological evolution of CuO and the formation of a protective carbon layer, while its excess quantity converted to g-C3N4 in the presence of CuO. Through heat treatment of the nanocomposite, carbon-doped...

These engines are benefited by the adsorption capacity and antibacterial activity of silver-zeolites in combination with the autonomous propulsion of catalytic micromotors. The remarkable bactericidal capacity of these particles relies on reactive silver ion released from zeolite and accordingly, increased chance of contact with bacteria during movement. These motors showed rapid killing of bacteria and effective elimination of the Pseudomonas...

Based on the type of pollutant, hydrogels are divided into three different forms, including particles, films and nanocomposites. In this research, the absorption effect of metal cations as well as the absorption kinetics of polyvinyl pyrrolidine-based hydrogels, sodium...
