Curriculum Evaluation: Analysis of Teachers' and Students' Attitudes toward EFL Textbook Series

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alani, Amin (Author) ; Jahangard, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
According to Sheldon (1988) textbooks are visible hearts of any English language teaching program. Relevant textbooks are prerequisites of an appropriate teaching and learning situation (Hutchinson & Torres, 1994). Evaluation is helpful for making subsequent informed decisions through providing information on the usefulness and effectiveness of textbooks (Allwright, 1981). The Right Path to English and English Book are two Iranian textbook series that have been prescribed by the Ministry of Education for teaching in public Junior and Senior high schools, respectively. Employing Litz's (2005) questionnaires, attitudes of Iranian learners and teachers were obtained on both the series....

Development and Validation of an EFL Self-Regulated Learning Questionnaire

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jafari, Hamid (Author) ; Salehi, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Rahimi, Ali (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Self-regulated learning, though having swept educational psychology's literature like a tidal wave (Boekaerts, 1999), and also, compared to other constructs such as metacognition and learning strategies, has remained comparatively uncharted in L2 research. One preliminary step to chart this concept is to develop questionnaires for it. With these and other things in mind, the principal purpose of this study was to develop a questionnaire in English and Persian to measure self-regulated language learning capacity and behavior of Iranian EFL learners. The development of the questionnaire was guided by two pilots (412 participants), content validation through expert judgment, cognitive...

Recent studies have shown that the use of virtual reality technology provides a variety of diagnostic methods and clinical systems to prevent and delay cognitive aging to ensure the normal life of the elderly. In this project, efforts have been made to design some virtual reality-based games focusing on memory and recall in the form of three scenarios of finding address, finding car, and virtual-reality based maze game for the elderly to prevent cognitive decline and developing the dementia so that the difficulty of the game level ahead of each elderly can be adjusted according to his or her...

Possible role for growth hormone in suppressing acylated ghrelin and hunger ratings during and after intermittent exercise of different intensities in obese individuals

    , Article Acta Medica Iranica ; Vol. 52, Issue. 1 , 2014 , pp. 29-37 ; ISSN: 1735-9694 Gholipour, M ; Kordi, M. R ; Taghikhani, M ; Ravasi, A. A ; Gaeini, A. A ; Tabrizi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Body weight is influenced by both food intake and energy expenditure. Acylated ghrelin enhances appetite, and its circulating level is suppressed by Growth Hormone. Data on the acylated ghrelin responses to exercise of different intensities in obese individuals are currently not available. This study examined the effects of an intermittent exercise protocol on acylated ghrelin levels and hunger ratings in obese people. Nine inactive male ran on the treadmill at 0900 with progressive intensities of 50, 60, 70, and 80% of VO2max for 10, 10, 5, and 2 min respectively. Blood samples were collected before the exercise at 0845 (-15 min as the resting values), after each workload (10, 23, 31, and...

Objectives. Stressors have a serious role in precipitating mental and somatic disorders and are an interesting subject for many clinical and community-based studies. Hence, the proper and accurate measurement of them is very important. We revised the stressful life event (SLE) questionnaire by adding weights to the events in order to measure and determine a cut point. Methods. A total of 4569 adults aged between 18 and 85 years completed the SLE questionnaire and the general health questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12). A hybrid model of genetic algorithm (GA) and artificial neural networks (ANNs) was applied to extract the relation between the stressful life events (evaluated by a 6-point Likert scale)...

Road traffic crashes have become an important public health problem. By studying the statistics of heavy vehicle crashes in the world, it becomes obvious that although heavy vehicle drivers experience fewer crashes than private car drivers, a large percentage of heavy vehicle crashes leads to death. So, it is important to identify the driving characteristics of heavy vehicle drivers. In this study, 474 Iranian truck drivers were interviewed face to face. Response rate of the survey was 80%, the participants who answered the questions on two behavioral questionnaires: Driver Behavior Questionnaire (DBQ) and Attention-Related Driving Error Scale (ARDES). Also, two sleep assessing...
