Mathematical modelling of the methane conversion to heavier hydrocarbons in a plasma reactor

    , Article Petroleum Science and Technology ; Vol. 32, Issue. 19 , 2014 , Pages 2275-2282 ; ISSN: 10916466 Kazemeini, M ; Zare, M. H ; Fattahi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, mathematical modeling of fixed-bed plasma reactor operated under isothermal condition was investigated. In this process, methane and acetylene were the inputted feed and ethane, ethylene, propylene, propane, i-butane, and n-butane were the output products. The amount of methane conversion obtained was 12.7% for the former feed, however, if pure methane was inputted this conversion rose to 13.8%. Furthermore, the plasma process enhanced the conversion as well as the selectivity toward the desired product and yield. In the present study, when methane and acetylene were fed at a molar ratio of CH4/C2H2 = 10 to the reactor, the selectivity of C2, C3, and C4 hydrocarbons was...

    Abstract
In this research, microstructure and corrosion properties of plasma nitriding and post-oxidation treated AISI 316 austenitic stainless steel have been studied. The plasma nitriding treatment was carried out at 450 C for 5 h in a D.C. plasma setup with a gas mixture of 25% N2-75% H2 followed by post-oxidation in gas mixtures of O2/H2: 1/3, 1/5, 1/9 and 1/12 for 30 min. The treated samples were characterized by SEM, XRD and roughness testing. Potentiodynamic and cyclic polarization tests were also employed to evaluate the corrosion resistance of the samples. The results showed that plasma nitriding treatment decreases corrosion resistance of the steel substrate. However, post-oxidizing...

    , Article Journal of Natural Gas Chemistry ; Volume 21, Issue 4 , 2012 , Pages 466-475 ; 10039953 (ISSN) Aziznia, A ; Bozorgzadeh, H. R ; Seyed Matin, N ; Baghalha, M ; Mohamadalizadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
In the current study, the hybrid effect of a corona discharge and γ-alumina supported Ni catalysts in CO 2 reforming of methane is investigated. The study includes both purely catalytic operation in the temperature range of 923-1023 K, and hybrid catalytic-plasma operation of DC corona discharge reactor at room temperature and ambient pressure. The effect of feed flow rate, discharge power and Ni/γ-Al 2O 3 catalysts are studied. When CH 4/CO 2 ratio in the feed is 1/2, the syngas of low H 2/CO ratio at about 0.56 is obtained, which is a potential feedstock for synthesis of liquid hydrocarbons. Although Ni catalyst is only active above 573 K, presence of Ni catalysts in the cold corona plasma...

    Abstract
Low-frequency O 2 plasma was used to modify the surface of polysulfone gas-separation membranes. The effects of the treatment time and plasma power input on the membranes were also investigated. Pure CO 2 and CH 4 gas-permeation measurements were performed before and after plasma treatment. The results show the increase of permeability of the treated membranes due to surface ablation and surface polarization up to 5.63 and 68.80 gas-permeation units for CH 4 and CO 2, respectively, whereas, the CO 2/CH 4 selectivity of the treated membranes varied from 7.7 to 45.3, depending on the treatment conditions. Attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy determined the...

    Abstract
The applicability of Plasma Impulse Technology (PIT) in the enhancement of oil recovery has been proved in recent years. The priority of this environmental friendly treatment has been proved by the Russian operators which has applied this technology on many production and injection wells. This study presents a brief discussion on probable pressure based mechanisms which govern the interaction between reservoir formation and plasma impulse jet. High pressure of the ejected plasma may cause formation fracturing, damage removal due to pressure shocks and reservoir fluid resonance

    Abstract
Plasma impulse technology (PIT) is one of the most innovative methods among the oil recovery enhancement (EOR) jobs. Although the low cost and persistent effects of this method has attracted researchers attentions to its self, the governing mechanisms of reservoir remediation in this method are still shrouded in mystery. This study presents a brief discussion on probable thermal mechanisms which govern the interaction between reservoir formation and plasma impulse jet. Minerals dissociation, opening the fused pathway and organic deposits melting seem to be of the most important thermal effects

Surface chemistry of atmospheric plasma modified polycarbonate substrates

    , Article Applied Surface Science ; Volume 257, Issue 23 , September , 2011 , Pages 9836-9839 ; 01694332 (ISSN) Yaghoubi, H ; Taghavinia, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Surface of polycarbonate substrates were activated by atmospheric plasma torch using different gas pressure, distance from the substrates, velocity of the torch and number of treatments. The modifications were analyzed by contact angle measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and UV-vis spectrophotometry. Plasma treatment caused the surface characteristics to become more hydrophilic as measured by the water contact angle, which decreased from 88° to 18°. The decrease in contact angle was mainly due to oxidation of the surface groups, leading to formation of polar groups with hydrophilic property. XPS results showed an increase in the intensity of...

This paper investigates the stall control over an airfoil employing dual excitation of separated shear layers with dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuators. This novel approach is studied experimentally on the NACA 0015 airfoil at the angle of attack and Reynolds number of 14° and 0.3×106, respectively. To analyze the baseline flow, Time-averaged pressure distributions on the airfoil surfaces are evaluated with 40 pressure taps. Further, the dominant natural frequencies associated with flow structures in the airfoil wake are examined utilizing a hot-wire anemometer. Two plasma actuators, one on the suction side just upstream the separation point and the other on the pressure side at the...

    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
In this study, the fatigue behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy is tend to be improved by severe plastic deformation via shot peening and plasma nitriding. Shot peening with sub-branches: Conventional shot peening (A12-14), severe shot peening (A28–30 and A34-36) and repeening (N6-8) are exposed. Besides plasma nitriding is implemented at 500 °C, 550 °C and 600 °C with the durations of 4, 8 and 16 h. Due to utilization of shot peening as prior severe plastic deformation during diffusion of nitrogen, two methods are applied in sequence. Severe shot peening forms ultra-fine crystals and oriented grains by disintegrating of α and β phases just below the surface and increases surface roughness. Plasma...

    Abstract
PbS quantum dots (QDs) have been extensively studied for photovoltaic applications, thanks to their facile and low-cost fabrication processing and interesting physical properties such as size dependent and tunable band gap. However, the performance of PbS QD-based solar cells is highly sensitive to the humidity level in the ambient air, which is a serious obstacle toward its practical applications. Although it has been previously revealed that oxygen doping of the hole transporting layer can mitigate the cause of this issue, the suggested methods to recover the device performance are time-consuming and relatively costly. Here, we report a low-power oxygen plasma treatment as a rapid and...

Then, plasma nitriding at 400 0 C-4h and 475 0 C-2h temperature-duration conditions. The condition of 475 0 C-2h provides the requirements of...
