    Abstract
The high aspect ratio and unique thermal and electrical characteristics of carbon nanofiber (CNF) made it an ideal physical barrier against the penetration of corrosive ions. However, the poor compatibility of the CNF with the polymer matrix and the lack of active corrosion inhibitors are the key limitations of this nanomaterial, resulting in short-term anti-corrosion resistance. An intelligent self-healing epoxy (EP) coating, including CNF modified with a polydopamine (PDA)-La3+ complex, was successfully fabricated to overcome these issues. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) evaluation implied that mild steel (MS) submerged in a 3.5 wt % NaCl solution containing the CNF-PDA-La...

    Abstract
Breast cancer incidence has increased in recent decades. In the present study, an optimum formulation of chitosan (CS)-adorned niosome-based nanocarriers for co-delivery of doxorubicin (DOX) and vincristine (VIN) was developed for the treatment of breast cancer to reduce drug doses and overcome multidrug resistance. The three-level Box-Behnken method was utilized to optimize the particles in terms of size, polydispersity index (PDI), entrapment efficacy (EE (%)), and percent of drug release (%). The release rate of two drugs from CS-adorned nanoparticles (DOX+VIN/Nio/CS) in acidic and physiological pH is less than uncoated niosome (DOX+VIN/Nio). In addition, acidic pH increases the release...

Efficient removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous media by unmodified and modified nanodiamonds

    , Article Journal of Environmental Management ; Volume 316 , 2022 ; 03014797 (ISSN) Ahmadijokani, F ; Molavi, H ; Peyghambari, A ; Shojaei, A ; Rezakazemi, M ; Aminabhavi, T. M ; Arjmand, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Academic Press  2022
    Abstract
This article deals with the adsorption performances of the unmodified nanodiamond (ND) and thermally oxidized nanodiamond (Ox-ND) for the removal of different heavy metal ions such as Fe (III), Cu (II), Cr (VI), and Cd (II) from wastewater. The adsorption capacities of the ions onto adsorbents are higher and follow the order: Ox-ND-3 > Ox-ND-1.5 > ND, which is consistent with their surface areas, zeta potentials, and the presence of carboxyl groups, suggesting that electrostatic attractions between the positive metal ions and the negatively charged adsorbents are the predominant adsorption mechanisms. Adsorption capacities of these adsorbents were found to be 26.8, 31.3, and 45.7 mg/g for Fe...

    Abstract
Objective(s): Bioresorbable scaffolds have been advocated as the new generation in interventional cardiology because they could provide temporary scaffolds and then disappear with resorption. Although, the available stents in clinical trials exhibited biosafety, efficacy, no death, and no apparent thrombosis, Mg-substrate degradation on drug release has not been investigated. Materials and Methods: Therefore, more research has been needed to legitimize the replacement of current stents with Mg-based stents. UV-Vis spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), pH measurement, H2 evolution, and corrosion tests determined the change in hybrid properties and...

    Abstract
Landfill leachate is a highly contaminated liquid generated in municipal solid waste landfills. The application of sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOP) in landfill leachate treatments is emerging due to their ability to degrade both organic refractory matters and ammonia nitrogen. In this paper, application of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), activated by Fe2+ and UV was used as an economical and environmentally friendly approach for treatment of landfill leachate. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia removals were measured as the two primary responses of landfill leachate to UV/PMS/Fe2+ treatment system. The main parameters (pH, PMS/Fe2+ mass ratio, Fe2+ dosage) affecting...

    Abstract
Herein, the facile and tunable technique for the preparation of novel multi-stimuli-responsive nanocomposites via RAFT polymerization for DOX delivery is reported. The influence of the molecular weight of pH- and thermo-sensitive poly (acrylic acid-co-NIPAM) (PNAx), as a macro-RAFT agent, on the nanocomposites size and drug release rate was investigated. The outcome of this study reveals that macro-RAFT agent with lower molecular weight can be attached to the surface of magnetic nanoparticles with higher content of polymeric layer than can macro-RAFT agent with higher molecular weight. Also, it was observed that the particle size, polymer grafting density, DOX loading capacity, and DOX...

    Abstract
Developing chemical sensors with pronounced sensitivity towards lanthanides is a very important task related to the analytical control of industrial processes in nuclear industry. Various diamides of organic acids were shown to be very effective for such sensing applications when employed as ligands in plasticized polymeric membranes of potentiometric sensors. The chemical structures of some of these ligands (diamides of diglycolic acid) are very similar to those suggested in 80’s as Ca(II) ionophores that were later commercialized. We have hypothesized that commercial ionophores ETH 129 (N,N,N′,N′-tetra[cyclohexyl] diglycolic acid diamide) and ETH 5234...

    Abstract
The potential of hydrogen (pH) is a basic and critical parameter representing the function of numerous chemicals/biomolecules. Due to the widespread applications of pH in diverse fields, the development of rapid and simple yet reliable probes for the determination of pH has attracted significant interest. In this paper, by using AuNRs, silver ions, and ascorbic acid as colorimetric pH sensor, a multicolorimetric nanosensor is described for pH measurement. The reduction of silver ions by ascorbic acid which is strongly influenced by pH, results in silver nanoshell deposition on the surface of AuNRs. Consequently, the formation of Au@Ag core-shell NRs causes a series of blue shifts in the...

    Abstract
The novel coronavirus, recognized as COVID-19, is the cause of an infection outbreak in December 2019. The effect of temperature and pH changes on the main protease of SARS-CoV-2 were investigated using all-atom molecular dynamics simulation. The obtained results from the root mean square deviation (RMSD) and root mean square fluctuations (RMSF) analyses showed that at a constant temperature of 25℃ and pH=5, the conformational change of the main protease is more significant than that of pH=6 and 7. Also, by increasing temperature from 25℃ to 55℃ at constant pH=7, a remarkable change in protein structure was observed. The radial probability of water molecules around the main protease was...

    , Article Journal of Material Cycles and Waste Management ; Volume 24, Issue 1 , 2022 , Pages 83-96 ; 14384957 (ISSN) Arshadi, M ; Esmaeili, A ; Yaghmaei, S ; Arab, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Japan  2022
    Abstract
In this research, Zn, Ni, and Cu recovery from mobile phone printed circuit boards was investigated. The initial pH and pulp density using Aspergillus niger or Penicillium simplicissimum fungi were optimized to improve the recovery of Zn, Ni, and Cu using a central composite design. Fungi were able to recover 97% of Cu. Often for Ni recovery, A. niger was more effective, but in low pulp densities and low pH, P. simplicissimum was preferred. For recovery of Zn, A. niger is more appropriate at pH lower than 6, but P. simplicissimum outperforms at pH higher than 6. Under the optimum conditions (pulp density of 4 gL−1 and initial pH 10), the respective recovery of Cu, Ni, and Zn was determined...

Effect of collision on self-assembly of nanoparticles in zirconia microparticle suspension

    Abstract
Nanoparticle halo mechanism is a stabilization method for microparticle suspensions. This study investigates suspension pH and nanoparticles–microparticles collision effects on the stabilization of an aqueous binary suspension. The long-term turbidity measurements show that for the nanosilica suspension stability is directly correlated with pH values; however, in the cases of zirconia and binary suspensions, it is not a monotonic function of pH. It is shown that for binary suspension, the halo mechanism is the primary method affecting the stability of the suspension. The suspension is best-stabilized at pH = 5 that is associated with high halo mechanism efficiency, while increased repulsive...
