, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shahsavan, Shakiba (Author) ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Polypropylene block copolymer is used in different industries like pipe productions. This copolymer has proper mechanical properties, specially it has good impact strength, but in some applications it’s elastic modulus (stiffness) is not enough and that leads to some problemes in servise. Nucleating agents influence crystalline structure and properties and also the mechanical properties by controlling the crystallization process. Nanoparticles also have a beneficial effects on physical and mechanical properties. In this study, the effect of adding two types of α-phase nucleating agents (commercial names NA11 and DMDBS) in the form of masterbatch wt 5% with a carrier of polypropylene block...

Study the Effect of Carrier Resin of the Nucleating Agent Masterbatch on Crystalline Structure and Physical and Mechanical Properties of Polypropylene

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shokrollahi, Maryam (Author) ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Polypropylene (PP) is one of the most widely used commercial plastics in various industrial applications due to its desirable physical and mechanical properties and low cost. Engineering properties of this polymer depend very much on its crystalline structure. It is a common practice in polymer industry to modify crystalline structure by means of nucleating agents. Since nucleating agents are added in a rather low level to polymers, some investigators have tried this task in modifying crystalline structure of polypropylene by incorporating nucleating agent masterbatches. However, none have looked at the possible influence of the carrier resin in such masterbatches on the performance of...

Numerical Modeling of Fretting Fatigue Crack Nucleation using Finite Element Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Goharzay, Hamed (Author) ; Adibnazari, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Fretting fatigue damage occurs in contacting components while they are subjected to fluctuating loads and relatively small movement at the same time. In this condition some micro-cracks are created in these components. These micro-cracks will be propagated and cause sudden failure which is accompanied by great human and economic loss. There are many practical applications that are subjected to fretting fatigue, such as bolted and riveted connections, bearing shafts, blade-disk attachment in gas turbines, aero-engine splined couplings, cable connections and etc. Fretting fatigue failure process can be divided into two portions of crack initiation and propagation. It is very difficult, to...

Phase field modeling of crack growth with double-well potential including surface effects

    , Article Continuum Mechanics and Thermodynamics ; 2019 ; 09351175 (ISSN) Jafarzadeh, H ; Farrahi, G. H ; Javanbakht, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer New York LLC  2019
    Abstract
A thermodynamically consistent phase field approach for fracture including surface stresses is presented. The surface stresses which are distributed inside a finite width layer at the crack surface are introduced as a result of employing some geometrical nonlinearities, i.e., by defining energy terms per unit volume at the current time and evaluating gradient of the order parameter in the current configuration. A double-well barrier term is included in the structure of the Helmholtz free energy which allows one to use the energy terms per unit volume at the current time when introducing the surface stresses in the current approach. Thus, the surface stresses are introduced in a similar way...

    Abstract
The effect of the nucleating agent masterbatch carrier resin on the nonisothermal crystallization of a pipe-grade polypropylene block copolymer was investigated at three different cooling rates using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Bis(3,4-dimethylibenzylidene) sorbitol (DMDBS), a well-known, third-generation sorbitol derivative, was used as a nucleating agent in this study. Crystallization kinetic parameters obtained from DSC cooling curves showed that incorporation of a nucleating agent by means of a masterbatch increased the crystallization rate by approximately two times compared to that of the sample with the same concentration of nucleating agent without the use of a...
