Expectation-maximization algorithm to develop a normal distribution NHPP reliability growth model

    , Article Engineering Failure Analysis ; Volume 140 , 2022 ; 13506307 (ISSN) Nadjafi, M ; Gholami, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
One of the most important goals of any organization for a product that goes into the design or manufacturing process is to improve its reliability. Reliability growth is defined as improving a product's criteria (input parameters) during operation using changes in design or production. This paper presents a hardware-centric approach for the reliability growth of systems following normal distribution based on the Non-Homogeneous Poisson Process (NHPP). To reach this goal, the reliability growth modeling equations for the NHPP with the assumption of the normal distribution for failure data are extracted and obtained. Then, the maximum likelihood estimation technique based on the...

Conical localization from angle measurements: an approximate convex solution

    , Article IEEE Sensors Letters ; Volume 6, Issue 5 , 2022 ; 24751472 (ISSN) Alamdari, E ; Behnia, F ; Amiri, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
For several years, a substantial effort has been devoted to the study of 3-D source localization based on 2-D arrays by measuring the well-known azimuth and elevation angles. However, studies on 3-D source localization performed by 1-D arrays are still lacking. Perhaps, the most important drawback in the deployment of a 2-D array structure lies in the fact that it needs a planar space, which might not be available in some applications. This letter concentrates on the problem of 3-D source localization based on 1-D angle measurement provided by a linear array. Different from the traditional 2-D structures where each measurement induces a straight line, each measurement in the 1-D array...

Joint likelihood estimation and model order selection for outlier censoring

    Abstract
This study deals with the problem of outlier censoring from the secondary data in a radar scenario, where the number of outliers is unknown. To this end, a procedure consisting of joint likelihood estimation and statistical model order selection (MOS) is proposed. Since the maximum likelihood (ML) estimation of the outlier subset requires to solve a combinatorial problem, an approximate ML (AML) method is employed to reduce the complexity. Therefore, to determine the number of outliers, different MOS criteria based on likelihood function are applied. At the analysis stage, the performance of the proposed methods is assessed based on simulated data. The results highlight that the devised...

Moving target localization in bistatic forward scatter radars: performance study and efficient estimators

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2020
    Abstract
This paper considers the localization of a moving target using a forward scatter radar consisting of a transmitter and an array antenna receiver. A direct positioning method based on maximum likelihood (ML) estimation is proposed and compared with the conventional two-step method in which the primary parameters, including Doppler shift and angle of arrival, should be determined in the first step. Moreover, closed-form expressions for Cramer-Rao lower bound of both methods are derived. The aforementioned methods are comprehensively compared in terms of positioning accuracy and computational complexity. Theoretical performance study, including determining the minimum required observation time...

An approximate ml estimator for moving target localization in distributed mimo radars

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2020
    Abstract
This letter deals with the problem of moving target localization in distributed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems using time delay (TD) and Doppler shift (DS) measurements. The proposed solution to this problem consists of two stages. In the first stage, an initial estimation of target location is obtained by solving the formulated maximum likelihood (ML) problem based on the TD measurements. In the second stage, by recognizing the obtained position estimate in the previous stage as a priori data and exploiting the DS measurements, another ML problem is formulated, which is efficiently solved via a tractable numerical method to produce a simultaneous estimation of target...

Efficient convex solution for 3-D localization in MIMO radars using delay and angle measurements

    , Article IEEE Communications Letters ; Volume 23, Issue 12 , 2019 , Pages 2219-2223 ; 10897798 (ISSN) Kazemi, A. R ; Amiri, R ; Behnia, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this letter, an efficient estimator for 3-D target localization in distributed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars using time delay (TD) and angle of arrival (AOA) measurements is proposed. First, an approximately equivalent maximum likelihood (ML) estimation problem is formulated. Then, the aforementioned ML problem is recast into a convex optimization problem for which we derive a semi closed-form solution that eventually boils down to finding the roots of certain polynomials. Using numerical simulations, we demonstrate that the proposed estimator reaches the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) up to relatively high Gaussian measurement noise levels. Furthermore, the proposed method...

Joint compensation of jitter noise and time-shift errors in multichannel sampling system

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement ; Volume 68, Issue 10 , 2019 , Pages 3932-3941 ; 00189456 (ISSN) Araghi, H ; Akhaee, M. A ; Amini, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In high-speed analog-To-digital converters (ADCs), two main factors contribute to high power consumption. The first is the super linear relationship with the sampling rate; i.e., by doubling the sampling rate, the power consumption more than doubles. The second factor arises from the consumption of analog circuitry responsible to mitigate the jitter noise. By employing a multichannel sampling system, one can achieve high sampling rates by incorporating multiple low sampling-rate channels, which results in a linear scaling of power consumption with the number of channels. The main drawback of this system is the timing mismatch between the sampling channels. In this paper, we intend to jointly...

Efficient joint moving target and antenna localization in distributed MIMO radars

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications ; Volume 18, Issue 9 , 2019 , Pages 4425-4435 ; 15361276 (ISSN) Amiri, R ; Behnia, F ; Noroozi, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a novel solution for the problem of joint moving target and antenna localization in the distributed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems is proposed. The localization problem in the presence of antenna location uncertainty is formulated as a maximum likelihood (ML) estimation problem, which is then recast into convex form by defining some auxiliary variables and applying semidefinite relation (SDR) technique. Next, an algebraic closed-form estimator is proposed to jointly estimate the target and the antennas error terms and refine their uncertain values. The proposed method is shown analytically and verified by the numerical simulations to be an efficient...

Estimating a mixed-profile MDCEV: case of daily activity type and duration

    Abstract
Multiple Discrete Continuous Extreme Value (MDCEV) has become popular in the past years. Yet, the model suffers from an ‘empirical identification’ issue that is mainly due to inter-relations between two of its parameters, α and γ. This paper presents a hybrid optimization paradigm (named HELPME) to address this issue in a basic MDCEV formulation and take full advantage of the model by estimating a ‘mixed-profile.’ HELPME benefits from a coarse-to-fine search strategy, in which a customized Electromagnetism-like meta-heuristic precedes a gradient-based approach. The Atlanta Regional Travel Survey (2011) is used to empirically analyze performance of HELPME as well as significance of the...

    Abstract
There are several perturbations that force the satellite orbit to deviate from the elliptical form. To cope with these perturbations, station keeping is applied. For accurate station keeping, determination of the true satellite orbit is necessary. Radio interferometry is one of the techniques used for determining azimuth and elevation look angles of a satellite. In this paper, we introduce three structures based on interferometry for determining the view angles of satellites. The estimated angles are combined with range measurement for orbital positioning of geostationary (GEO) satellites. In the proposed interferometry structures, to acquire the required angular accuracy, the distance...

Dandelion: A unified code offloading system for wearable computing

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing ; Volume 18, Issue 3 , 2019 , Pages 546-559 ; 15361233 (ISSN) Golkarifard, M ; Yang, J ; Huang, Z ; Movaghar, A ; Hui, P ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Execution speed seriously bothers application developers and users for wearable devices such as Google Glass. Intensive applications like 3D games suffer from significant delays when CPU is busy. Energy is another concern when the devices are in low battery level, but users need them for urgency use. To ease such pains, one approach is to expand the computational power by cloud offloading. This paradigm works well when the available Internet access has enough bandwidth. Another way is to leverage nearby devices for computation-offloading, which is known as device-to-device (D2D) offloading. In this paper, we present Dandelion, a unified code offloading system for wearable computing. Such...

Fast temporal path localization on graphs via multiscale viterbi decoding

    Abstract
We consider a problem of localizing a temporal path signal that evolves over time on a graph. A path signal represents the trajectory of a moving agent on a graph in a series of consecutive time stamps. Through combining dynamic programing and graph partitioning, we propose a path-localization algorithm with significantly reduced computational complexity. To analyze the localization performance, we use two evaluation metrics to quantify the localization error: The Hamming distance and the destination's distance between the ground-truth path and the estimated path. In random geometric graphs, we provide a closed-form expression for the localization error bound, and a tradeoff between...

    Abstract
Elliptic localization is a range-based positioning technique exploiting multiple transmitter-receiver pairs, each of which provides separate bistatic range (BR) measurements. In this paper, a novel computationally efficient solution for locating a single target from BR measurements in distributed MIMO radar systems is proposed. Due to nonconvex nature of the associated maximum likelihood (ML) estimation problem, its globally optimal solution is difficult to obtain. We first reformulate the ML estimation as a nonconvex constrained weighted least squares problem. Owing to special structure of the resulting problem, it is recast as a convex problem, whose exact solution can be obtained in...

    Abstract
Modern sensors consist of arrays of detectors specially arranged to enhance precision, capabilities, and field of view (FOV). Sensor arrays can have multiple functionalities, such as the simultaneous detection of position and motion. We use a linear sensor model and develop an optimization method to design an array of photodiodes. Our objective function minimizes bias and variance estimations. We introduce a maximum likelihood technique to approximate and determine the bias caused by measurement errors, and verify our theory by statistically complete simulations. We apply our theory to design an optimal sun sensor. The sensor has a predefined conical FOV, and its accuracy is controlled by a...

    Abstract
Time-interleaved analog to digital converters (TI-ADC) offer high sampling rates by passing the input signal through C parallel low-rate ADCs. We can achieve C-times the sampling rate of a single ADC if all the shifts between the channels are identical. In practice, however, it is not possible to avoid mismatch among shifts. Besides, the samples are also subject to jitter noise. In this paper, we propose a blind method to mitigate the joint effects of sampling jitter and shift mismatch in the TI-ADC structure. We assume the input signal to be bandlimited and incorporate the jitter via a stochastic model. Next, we derive an approximate model based on a first-order Taylor series and use an...

Soft context clustering for F0 modeling in HMM-based speech synthesis

    Springer International Publishing  2015
    Abstract
This paper proposes the use of a new binary decision tree, which we call a soft decision tree, to improve generalization performance compared to the conventional ‘hard’ decision tree method that is used to cluster context-dependent model parameters in statistical parametric speech synthesis. We apply the method to improve the modeling of fundamental frequency, which is an important factor in synthesizing natural-sounding high-quality speech. Conventionally, hard decision tree-clustered hidden Markov models (HMMs) are used, in which each model parameter is assigned to a single leaf node. However, this ‘divide-and-conquer’ approach leads to data sparsity, with the consequence that it suffers...

Design and Implementation of Time and Frequency Synchronization in LTE

    Abstract
A novel architecture for efficient time and frequency synchronization, applied to the long-term evolution (LTE) standard, is proposed. For symbol timing, we propose applying a symbol-folding method on top of the sign-bit reduction technique, leading to a novel algorithm for the cyclic prefix-type recognition in LTE. Following the symbol timing, the fractional carrier frequency offset is estimated and compensated using an adaptive gain loop, which allows for a high-accuracy compensation in a short interval. In the frequency domain, for cell search, we propose a sign-bit reduction technique on top of the matched filter method for the primary synchronization signal detection. In addition, we...

Drift change point estimation in multistage processes using MLE

    , Article International Journal of Reliability, Quality and Safety Engineering ; Volume 22, Issue 5 , October , 2015 ; 02185393 (ISSN) Safaeipour, A ; Akhavan Niaki, S. T ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Usually the time a control chart shows an out-of-control signal is not the exact time at which a change happens; instead, the change has started before this time. The exact time the change starts is called the change point. Although many manufacturing processes are of a multistage type, most of change point estimations in the literature focused on processes with a single stage. In this research, a multistage process with a single quality characteristic monitored in each stage is first modeled using both a first-order autoregressive (AR(1)) and an autoregressive moving average (ARMA(1, 1)) model. Then, a maximum likelihood estimator is derived to estimate the change points, i.e., the sample...

    Abstract
Wind speed is the most important parameter in the design and study of wind energy conversion systems. The weibull distribution is commonly used for wind energy analysis as it can represent the wind variations with an acceptable level of accuracy. In this study, the wind data for 11 cities in Iran have been analysed over a period of one year. The Goodness of fit test is used for testing data fit to weibull distribution. The results show that this data fit to weibull function very well. The scale and shape factors are two parameters of the weibull distribution that depend on the area under study. The kinds of numerical methods commonly used for estimating weibull parameters are reviewed. Their...
