A circuit model for analysis of metal-insulator-metal plasmonic complementary split-ring resonators

    , Article Journal of Lightwave Technology ; Vol. 32, issue. 15 , August , 2014 , pp. 2659-2665 ; ISSN: 07338724 Bahadori, M ; Eshaghian, A ; Mehrany, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A circuit model based on the transmission line theory is proposed to analyze the recently introduced metal-insulator-metal (MIM) complementary split-ring resonators (CSRRs). It is shown that integer and noninteger modes of CSRRs can be characterized by transmission line models with short- and open-circuited terminals. The proposed circuit model is then extended to incorporate side-coupling effects between the CSRRs and straight MIM waveguides. Thereby, simple closed-form expressions are provided for the coupling quality factor. It is shown that waveguide resonator structures based on CSRRs at specific resonance frequency and bandwidth can be smaller than waveguide resonator structures based...

Accurate and fast extraction of the bloch eigenmodes of fiber gratings

    , Article Progress In Electromagnetics Research M ; Volume 34 , 2013 , Pages 29-37 ; 19378726 (ISSN) Jazayeri, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Based on Bloch-Floquet's theorem and ordinary matrix calculations, a rigorous method for extraction of the eigenmodes of fiber gratings is developed. This method is also applicable to fiber gratings which are either physically multilayer or mathematically divided into layers along the radial coordinate. Although the well-known coupled mode theory (CMT) is accounted a method for extraction of the coefficients of reflection and transmission of finite-length FBGs, its inadequacy for extraction of the Bloch eigenmodes of FBGs is illustrated, even if the modulation depth of refractive index is small and the Bragg condition is satisfied

    Abstract
In this paper, the free vibration analysis of generally laminated composite beam (LCB) based on Timoshenko beam theory are presented using the method of Lagrange multipliers where in the free vibration problem is posed as a constrained variational problem. The effect of material couplings (bending-tension, bending-twist, and tension-twist couplings) with the effects of shear deformation, rotary inertia and Poisson's effect are taken into account. Analytical expression for the natural frequencies and mode shapes are presented. The calculated natural frequencies are verified against some available results in the literature and very good agreement is observed. Furthermore, the effects of some...

    Abstract
In this paper, a reduced order model for the nonlinear dynamic analysis of the wind turbine blade under operational loading is presented. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed model are investigated through various static and dynamic analyses. A comprehensive straightforward formulation for the nonlinear beam model is developed based on different large deformation strain theories. Also, the fluid-structure coupling effects due to quasi-steady aerodynamics and gravitational forces are included. The new matrix expressions are introduced for direct conversion of the developed formulation into the reduced order model (ROM). Thereafter, the ROM based on the Galerkin method is developed...

    , Article Volume 7713 ; Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering, 12 April 2010 through 15 April 2010 , 2010 ; 0277786X (ISSN) ; 9780819481863 (ISBN) Naqavi, A ; Monem Haghdoost, Z ; Abediasl, H ; Khorasani, S ; Mehrany, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Effect of relaxation time on the performance of photonic crystal optical bistable switches based on Kerr nolinearity is discussed. This paper deals with optical pulses with the duration of about 50 ps. In such cases the steady state response of the optical device can be used to approximate the pulse evolution if the nonlinearity is assumed instantaneous, hence analytical solutions such as the coupled mode theory can be used to obtain the time evolution of the electromagnetic fields. However if the relaxation time of the material nonlinear response is also considered, changes in the power levels and in the shape of the hystersis loop is observed. In this case, we use the nonlinear finite...

Optimum operation of single cavity photonic switches

    Abstract
In this work, an optimum frequency is found for the operation of single cavity photonic switches. At this optimum point, the transmission contrast of ON and OFF states takes its highest value, while keeping the device power threshold relatively low and the device speed acceptably high. Then, the dynamic behavior of a typical single cavity all optical switch is investigated in the optimum operation point through temporal Coupled Mode Theory. Switching speed and power are discussed, and the device is shown to be applicable for telecommunication and data processing applications. The analysis is quite general, and can be used for resonant structures, such as photonic crystals and microring...

The Impact of Non-reciprocal One-way Propagation on the Coupling between Electromagnetic Resonators and Waveguides

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zarif, Arezoo (Author) ; Mehrany, Khashayar (Supervisor) ; Rajaei, Behzad (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Subwavelength localization of electromagnetic energy with intense local fields, also known as electromagnetic hotspots, has received significant attention over the past few decades. In most cases the hotspot is achieved through the resonant concentration of electromagnetic fields. One way recently considered to get hotspot is through reflection of electromagnetic waves in nonreciprocal one-way structures, in plasmonics and via magneto optic effect. However these hotspots are less confined compared to hotspots caused by resonances. So combining nonreciprocal structures with resonance can provide better hotspots. Our aim in this thesis is to study nonreciprocal resonant structures using coupled...

On the power-bandwidth trade-off in bistable photonic switches

    Abstract
Low power operation and high speed have always been desirable in applications such as data processing and telecommunications. While achieving these two goals simultaneously, however, one encounters the well-known powerbandwidth trade-off. This is here discussed in a typical bistable switch based on a two-dimensional photonic crystal with Kerr type nonlinearity. The discussion is supported by the nonlinear finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation of a direct coupled structure with a home-developed code. Two cases of working near resonant and off- resonant are simulated to compare the power and the speed of the device in the two cases. It is shown that working nearresonance reduces the...

Wideband and narrowband circuit models for fano-shape guided-mode resonance

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose two different types of circuit models for Fano-shape guided-mode resonance (GMR) in waveguide gratings. Both the models constitute a resonant tank circuit together with a direct non-resonant channel between the incident and scattered light. One neglects the frequency dependence of the direct non-resonant channel and is only more accurate in the immediate vicinity of the Fano-type resonance. The other accounts for the frequency dependence of the direct non-resonant channel and thus remains accurate within a wider range of frequencies. The former being referred to as the narrow-band model is extremely accurate, insofar as the isolated GMR is of interest within a...

    Abstract
Temporal coupled mode theory (CMT) has so far been applied phenomenologically in the analysis of optical cavity-waveguide structures, and relies on a priori knowledge of the to-be-excited resonator mode. Thus a rigorous derivation from Maxwell's equations, and without any prior knowledge of the resonator type is needed. In this paper we derive temporal CMT of optical cavities coupled to waveguides. Starting from Maxwell's equations and considering a proper expansion of the modes of the waveguide and resonator, and using mode orthogonality, the temporal CMT for this structure is obtained. We show that this formulation is general and can be applied to both traveling wave and standing wave type...

    Non-reciprocity using quadrature-phase time-varying slab resonators

    Abstract
In this paper, it is shown that non-reciprocity can be observed in time-varying media without employing spatiotemporal modulated permittivities. We show that by using only two one-dimensional Fabry–Perot slabs with time-periodic permittivities having quadrature-phase difference, it is possible to achieve considerable non-reciprocity in transmission at the incidence frequency. To analyze such a scenario, generalized transfer matrices are introduced to find the wave amplitudes of all harmonics in all space. The results are verified by in-house finite-difference time-domain simulations. Moreover, in order to have a simple model of such time-varying slab resonators, a time-perturbed coupled-mode...

Optical isolation enabled by two time-modulated point perturbations in a ring resonator

    Abstract
In this paper we achieve non-reciprocity in a silicon optical ring resonator, by introducing two small time-modulated perturbations into the ring. Isolators are designed using this time-perturbed ring, side-coupled to waveguides. The underlying operation of the time-modulated ring and isolator is analyzed using Temporal Coupled Mode Theory (TCMT). The TCMT is used to find the angular distance, phase difference and thickness of the two time-modulated points on the ring resonator and also to find and justify the optimum values for the modulation frequency and amplitude, which yields maximum isolation in the isolator arrangements. Insight into the major players that determine isolation are also...

Pure coupled mode analysis of diffraction by isotropic transmission volume gratings

    Abstract
The idea of pure coupled mode approach is extended to the analysis of volume grating structures. In this approach, diffraction orders inside the grating are expanded over TE and TM components and unperturbed wavevectors are used instead of Floquet wavevectors of conventional coupled wave approach. Coupling between these orders are considered to model the diffraction. Three-dimensional grating structures are analyzed, and comparisons with rigorous coupled wave analysis are made to verify the accuracy and determine the range of applicability of the proposed method. © 2004 IEEE

    Abstract
Recently, a group of novel devices based on conducting interfaces is proposed. These conducting interfaces can be implemented by using the inversion layer of MOS structures, trapped charges or depletion layer charges. It has been shown that these structures can support surface electromagnetic waves. In this paper, the coupling of surface electromagnetic waves supported by conducting interfaces is analyzed and an analytical formula is driven by using the coupled mode theory. It is shown that one can program the coupling length of this structure by applying a transverse voltage and obtain a new type of optical modulator. The results obtained by coupled mode theory are verified by solving...

    Abstract
In this paper, the transfer matrix method is modified for study of optical wave propagation in layered media with conducting interfaces. Both the TE and TM mode transfer matrices are derived and their properties are discussed. As examples, the reflection and transmission coefficients of a single conducting interface and the dispersion equation of a Krönig-Penney photonic crystal are obtained, all being in agreement with previous results. Also, the coupling coefficients of two slab waveguides with conducting interfaces are found for TE and TM polarizations

    Abstract
In this paper, the coupling coefficient between two adjacent waveguides with conducting interfaces is calculated analytically. It is shown that the presence of interface charges, their density being controlled via a transverse voltage, leads to the control of the coupling. To derive the coupling coefficient, the basic Coupled Mode Theory (CMT) with paraxial approximation is improved to include the effect of conducting interfaces. The analysis is performed independently for TE and TM polarizations. Several direct applications of this effect such as multiplexer, coupler and Mach/Zhender modulator/switch and programmable grating are introduced
