    , Article Energy and Fuels ; Vol. 29, issue. 2 , January , 2015 , p. 649-658 ; ISSN: 08870624 Dehghan, A. A ; Masihi, M ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this work, a newly formulated sulfonate-based surfactant and two other commercial sulfate-based surfactants with the capability of tolerating harsh underground reservoir conditions, such as high-saline formation water and high temperature, were prepared. Sodium metaborate as an effective alkali compound was also used to provide alkali-surfactant combination. Interfacial tension (IFT) measurements as well as wettability examinations for different salinities and mixture conditions were performed for an extended range of the chemical concentrations. The wettability tests including both contact angle measurements and Amott cell tests were performed on saturated Berea sandstone plug samples...

Effect of time and temperature on crude oil aging to do a right surfactant flooding with a new approach

    , Article Proceedings of the Annual Offshore Technology Conference ; Vol. 2, issue , 2014 , p. 1136-1142 ; ISSN: 01603663 ; ISBN: 9781632663870 Heidari, M. A ; Habibi, A ; Ayatollahi, S ; Masihi, M ; Ashoorian, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Dilute Surfactant flooding has been recognized as one of the significant processes in chemical flooding. Many oil reservoirs became appropriate candidates for surfactant/water flooding when screening criteria was developed. Injected surfactant tried to mobilize the residual oil that was trapped in interstice. The main contributing mechanism to enhance oil recovery by surfactant flooding was defined as rock wettability alteration. Wettability is one of the substantial parameters to choose the best approach for a successful surfactant flooding in which tiny change in wettability will lead to improve oil recovery fundamentally. In this experimental study the effect of different aging time and...

    , Article Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science ; Vol. 40, issue , July , 2012 , p. 168-176 ; ISSN: 08941777 Maghzi, A ; Mohammadi, S ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Kharrat, R ; Masihi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
It is well known that the displacement efficiency of EOR processes is mainly affected by wettability of porous medium; however, the role of nanoparticles on wettability alteration of pores surfaces remains a topic of debate in the literature. Furthermore, a little is known about how the dispersed silica nanoparticles affect the microscopic/macroscopic recovery efficiency of heavy oils during common immiscible EOR processes such as water flooding. In this study, a series of injection experiments was performed on five-spot glass micromodel which is initially saturated with the heavy oil. Distilled water and dispersed silica nanoparticles in water (DSNW) at different values of weight percent...

    , Article Journal of Applied Physics ; Vol. 116, Issue. 5 , 2014 ; ISSN: 00218979 Baghapour, Sh ; Parvin, P ; Reyhani, A ; Mortazavi, S. Z ; Mokhtari, S ; Amjadi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The renal capsule tissue of lamb was irradiated with ultraviolet-C light and the treated samples were analyzed by uniaxial tensile test, dynamic mechanical analysis, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and contact angle measurements. It was shown that the skin cross-linking is dominant in low doses in accordance with the contact angle assessment. Conversely, the strong bulk degradation takes place at high doses. Similarly, the bulk cross-linking affects the mechanical tests as to enhance the stiffness at low doses, whereas strong degradation occurs at high doses that mainly arises from the strong bulk chain scission

Dewetting of evaporating thin films over nanometer-scale topographies

    , Article Physical Review E - Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics ; Vol. 90, issue. 1 , July , 2014 ; ISSN: 15393755 Akbarzadeh, A. M ; Moosavi, A ; Moghimi Kheirabadi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A lubrication model is used to study dewetting of an evaporating thin film layer over a solid substrate with a nanometer-scale topography. The effects of the geometry of the topography, the contact angle, the film thickness, and the slippage on the dewetting have been studied. Our results reveal that the evaporation enhances the dewetting process and reduces the depinning time over the topography. Also it is shown that the depinning time is inversely proportional to the slippage and increasing the contact angle may considerably reduce the depinning time, while the film thickness increases the depinning time

Vertically aligned ZnO@CdS nanorod heterostructures for visible light photoinactivation of bacteria

    , Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Vol. 590 , 2014 , pp. 507-513 ; ISSN: 09258388 Zirak, M ; Akhavan, O ; Moradlou, O ; Nien, Y. T ; Moshfegh, A. Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Vertically aligned ZnO@CdS nanorod heterostructure films with various loadings of CdS nanoparticle shell were synthesized and applied in photoinactivation of Escherichia coli bacteria under visible light irradiation. While neither the bare ZnO nanorods (with band-gap energy (Eg) of ∼3.28 eV) under visible light irradiation nor the nanorod heterostructures in dark exhibited any significant antibacterial activity, the ZnO@CdS nanorod heterostructures (with Eg ∼2.5-2.6 eV) could successfully inactivate the bacteria under visible light irradiation. Furthermore, it was found that an optimum loading of the CdS shell (corresponding to the effective thickness less than ∼15 nm) is required to achieve...

Influence of glycerol and clay contents on biodegradability of corn starch nanocomposites

    , Article International Journal of Engineering, Transactions B: Applications ; Vol. 27, issue. 2 , 2014 , pp. 203-214 ; ISSN: 10252495 Heydari, A ; Alemzadeh, I ; Vossoughi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, biodegradation of corn starch/glycerol/Na-MMT nanocomposites by soil burial tests were carried out for up to 6 months. Films were prepared by casting method according to central composite design and response surface methodology was applied for analysis of the results. The effects of formulation on the water solubility, contact angle and tensile strength of starch films were investigated. Increasing in Na-MMT content decreased biodegradability; while presence of glycerol, increased it. The effect of nanoparticles content might have been attributed to interactions between starch and Na-MMT that further prevented enzymatic attack on the biopolymer. In addition, the films with...

Enhanced heavy oil recovery in sandstone cores using TiO2 nanofluids

    , Article Energy and Fuels ; Vol. 28, issue. 1 , 2014 , pp. 423-430 ; ISSN: 08870624 Ehtesabi, H ; Ahadian, M. M ; Taghikhani, V ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Anatase and amorphous TiO2 nanoparticles were used to improve recovery of heavy oil from sandstone cores. Before performing core floods, the stability of nanoparticles at different salinities was tested using ζ potential and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) methods. While water recovered only 49% of the oil in the core flood experiments, 0.01% anatase structure solution recovered 80% of the oil after injecting two pore volumes at optimum conditions. To understand the mechanism responsible for improved recovery, contact angle measurements were performed on the rock surface before and after treatment with the nanoparticle solution. Contact angle measurements showed that the rock wettability...

    , Article Journal of the Electrochemical Society ; Vol. 161, issue. 8 , 2014 , pp. E3110-E3124 ; ISSN: 00134651 Kalantari, H ; Baghalha, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a two-dimensional, two-phase, isothermal model is presented to investigate the water transport characteristic and water distribution in a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) with emphasis on exploring the water distribution in different layers of DMFC. The liquid-gas two-phase mass transport in the porous anode and cathode is formulated based on multi-fluid model in porous media and water and methanol crossover through the membrane are considered with the effect of diffusion, electro-osmotic drag, and convection. The modeling results agree well with the three different experimental data in an extensive range of operation conditions. A parametric study is also performed to examine...

Synthesis and characterization of co-doped TiO2 thin films on glass-ceramic

    , Article Materials Science in Semiconductor Processing ; Vol. 26, Issue 1 , October , 2014 , pp. 41-48 ; ISSN: 13698001 Ahmadi, N ; Nemati, A ; Solati-Hashjin, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this research, an attempt was made to improve TiO2 photo-catalyst properties, thus pure, N-Ce co-doped TiO2 thin films were prepared on glass-ceramic substrate using a sol-gel dip-coating technique. The samples were calcinated in air at 475 °C, 550°C, and 650°C for 2 h. The result of simultaneous thermal analysis (STA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that the presence of Ce in TiO2 could inhibit the phase transformation from anatase to rutile and enhance the thermal stability, and anatase was the dominant phase in N-Ce co-doped TiO2 samples. Also based on the results, the doping results in decreasing the size of TiO 2 crystallite. The results of ultra violet-visible light diffuse...

    , Article Petroleum Science and Technology ; Volume 31, Issue 12 , Jul , 2013 , Pages 1259-1267 ; 10916466 (ISSN) Biria, D ; Maghsoudi, E ; Roostaazad, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
To obtain potentially applicable microorganisms to an effective in situ microbial enhanced oil recovery operation, bacteria that were compatible with the harsh conditions of a petroleum reservoir were isolated from a crude oil sample. The application of an oil spreading technique showed that all of the isolates were capable of producing biosurfactants from both the glucose and crude oil as carbon sources. The secreted biosurfactants could at least reduce the surface tension 20 mN/m and for one of the isolates; the surface tension value dropped below 40 mN/m. In addition, the contact angle measurements revealed that the produced biosurfactants could effectively alter the wettability of the...

    Abstract
Nanofiber membranes were fabricated by electrospinning poly(vinylidene fluoride). The electrospun nanofiber membranes were further modified by grafting of acrylic acid (AA) and methacrylic acid (MAA) over the surfaces of the membranes. Plasma AA graft was attempted only, and the results indicated the partial membrane pore filling with grafted AA. For MAA grafting, chemically induced polymerization using benzoyl peroxide and hydrogen peroxide was attempted. The combination of plasma and chemically induced MAA graft polymerization was also attempted. The membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and static contact angle (SCA)...

Thin liquid film flow over substrates with two topographical features

    , Article Physical Review E - Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics ; Volume 87, Issue 2 , 2013 ; 15393755 (ISSN) Mazloomi, A ; Moosavi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
A multicomponent lattice Boltzmann scheme is used to investigate the surface coating of substrates with two topographical features by a gravity-driven thin liquid film. The considered topographies are U- and V-shaped grooves and mounds. For the case of substrates with two grooves, our results indicate that for each of the grooves there is a critical width such that if the groove width is larger than the critical width, the groove can be coated successfully. The critical width of each groove depends on the capillary number, the contact angle, the geometry, and the depth of that groove. The second groove critical width depends on, in addition, the geometry and the depth of the first groove;...

Surface roughness analysis of hydrophilic SiO2/TiO 2/glass nano bilayers by the level crossing approach

    , Article Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications ; Volume 392, Issue 9 , 2013 , Pages 2175-2181 ; 03784371 (ISSN) Daryaei, E ; Reza Rahimi Tabar, M ; Moshfegh, A. Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
The effect of etching time on the statistical properties of hydrophilic surfaces of SiO2/TiO2/glass nano bilayers has been studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and a stochastic approach based on a level crossing analysis. We have created rough surfaces of the hydrophilic SiO 2/TiO2 nano bilayer system by using 26% potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution. Measuring the average apparent contact angle allowed us to assess the degree of hydrophilicity, and the optimum condition was determined to be 10 min etching time. A level crossing analysis based on AFM images provided deeper insight into the microscopic details of the surface topography. With different etching times, it has been shown...

    Abstract
We investigate thin liquid film coating of substrates with trenches via lattice Boltzmann method. The effects of different parameters such as the capillary number, the contact angles and geometric parameters on the results are studied. Our results indicate that for trench depths greater than a critical size coating of the trench is not successful. The critical depth increases by decreasing the capillary number. Moreover we find height, width, capillary number and contact angle under which the coating is successful. The results have been compared with the available results and very close agreement has been achieved

Coarsening dynamics of dewetting nanodroplets on chemically patterned substrates

    , Article Physical Review E - Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics ; Volume 86, Issue 1 , July , 2012 ; 15393755 (ISSN) Moosavi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Mesoscopic hydrodynamic equations are solved to investigate coarsening dynamics of two interacting nanodroplets on chemically patterned substrates. The effects of different parameters such as the surface chemical pattern, the slip length, the profile of the disjoining pressure, the size of the droplets, and the contact angles on the coarsening are studied. Our results reveal that the presence of a chemical heterogeneity can enhance or weaken the coarsening dynamics depending on the pattern type and positions of the droplets on the substrate. Also increasing the contact angles to values larger than a critical value may qualitatively change the coarsening process, and the profile of the...
