    Abstract
Although Multi-Walled Carbon NanoTubes (MWCNTs) are found to influence the rheological behavior of drilling fluids, there are yet some controversies regarding their performance towards reducing formation damage induced by the invasion of water-based drilling fluids (WBFs). To address this important question, we synthesized novel nanocomposite materials via modifying the MWCNT via varying the proportion of carboxylated MWCNTs to PolyVinyl Alcohol (PVA). These nanocomposites were then used to make nano-based drilling-fluids (NDFs). The performance of the NDFs was evaluated by a set of rheological behavior tests, filtration experiments, and core-scale mud flow tests. To distinguish between the...

    Elsevier B.V  2022
    Abstract
Devising effective methods to reduce drag forces is of great interest as these methods could prevent the wastage of fuel and decrease carbon emission and the global warming rate. Since the invention of Liquid-Infused Surfaces (LISs) in 2011, numerous investigations have been conducted to study their capability in various applications. Due to recirculation or drawing of the penetrated liquid within the surface structure, these surfaces acquire a slippiness property. The conducted investigations showed that these slippery surfaces have great potential for reducing drag forces, whether in a laminar or turbulent flow. In the present work, we first briefly elucidate common drag reduction methods,...

    Abstract
The metal sulfides with highly negative reduction potential and long life-span of photocreated electrons are conducive to being exceptional candidates for CO2 photoreduction, whereas they suffer from self-photo-oxidation (or photocorrosion) that puts the greatest impediment to their practical application. Up to now, the Z-type strategy is stated as a favorable solution to overtake photocorrosion of metal sulfides, while the eligible choice for coupling with these materials is still challenging. TiO2 with more negative onset potential holds favorable inherent peculiarities over other materials, which produces overlapped potential with various ranges of metal sulfides. In this investigation,...

    , Article Langmuir ; Volume 38, Issue 38 , 2022 , Pages 11707-11723 ; 07437463 (ISSN) Ghaderi, M ; Saadatabadi, A. R ; Mahdavian, M ; Haddadi, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    American Chemical Society  2022
    Abstract
The high aspect ratio and unique thermal and electrical characteristics of carbon nanofiber (CNF) made it an ideal physical barrier against the penetration of corrosive ions. However, the poor compatibility of the CNF with the polymer matrix and the lack of active corrosion inhibitors are the key limitations of this nanomaterial, resulting in short-term anti-corrosion resistance. An intelligent self-healing epoxy (EP) coating, including CNF modified with a polydopamine (PDA)-La3+ complex, was successfully fabricated to overcome these issues. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) evaluation implied that mild steel (MS) submerged in a 3.5 wt % NaCl solution containing the CNF-PDA-La...

    Abstract
In the present study, the solubility of paracetamol in supercritical CO2 is measured at temperatures between 311 and 358 K and pressures between 95 and 265 bar. It was shown that the solubility of paracetamol through a static solubility measurement method was between 0.3055 × 10−6 to 16.3582 × 10−6 based on mole fraction. The obtained experimental solubility data revealed the direct effect of pressure on the paracetamol experimental data, while the temperature has a dual effect of both increasing and decreasing effect considering the shifting point known as crossover pressure which was measured to be around 110 bar for paracetamol. Besides, two theoretical approaches were applied to predict...

    , Article Transport in Porous Media ; Volume 145, Issue 1 , 2022 , Pages 175-195 ; 01693913 (ISSN) Khoei, A. R ; Ehsani, R ; Hosseini, N ; Sharif University of Technology
Springer Science and Business Media B.V  2022
    Abstract
In this paper, a numerical model is developed for the assessment of carbon dioxide transport through naturally fractured cap-rocks during CO2 sequestration in underground aquifers. The cap-rock contains two types of fracture with different length scales: micro-cracks (fissures) and macro-cracks (faults). The effect of micro-cracks is incorporated implicitly by modifying the intrinsic permeability tensor of porous matrix, while the macro-cracks are modeled explicitly using the extended finite element method (X-FEM). The fractured porous medium is decomposed into the porous matrix and fracture domain, which are occupied with two immiscible fluid phases, water and CO2. The flow inside the...

    Abstract
Despite the fact that solid–liquid phase change materials (PCMs) have various applications in thermal energy storage systems, the low solidification rate of PCMs, which is due to the low thermal conductivity has limited the range of applications of PCMs. One of the methods of increasing the solidification rate of PCMs is using a boiling fluid as an intermediary between the solid–liquid PCM and the condenser to prevent the direct contact between the phase change material and the condenser tubes, this method is also known as the intermediate boiling fluid (IBF) method. The IBF method has been shown to significantly increase the solidification rate (2 orders of magnitude). In this study, the...

Friction reduction in grafted carbon nanochannels by applying an electric field

    , Article Computational Materials Science ; Volume 213 , 2022 ; 09270256 (ISSN) Saleki, O ; Moosavi, A ; Hannani, S. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2022
    Abstract
Water can be pumped in nanochannels by limiting it between the surfaces with different hydrophobicities and exerting a spinning electric field. The asymmetrical hydrophobicity combined with the spinning electric field and the fact that the water molecules have a dipole moment create a situation in which the angular momentum of water molecules is transformed into a linear momentum and the water is pumped into the nanochannel. The hydrophobicity of the surfaces can be manipulated by using nanostructures to reduce friction. In this study, two types of nanostructures have been used which are hierarchical nanostructures and polymer nanostructures made of Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide). The walls of...
