    Abstract
To every Steiner system with parameters (t, k, v) on {1,…, v} and blocks B, we can assign its characteristic vector X B , which is a (0, 1)-vector whose entries are indexed by the k-subsets of {1,…, v} such that for each k-subset A of {1,…, v}, X B (A) = 1 if and only if A ∈ B. In this paper, we show that the dimension of the vector space generated by all of the characteristic vectors of Steiner systems with parameters (t, k, v) is (Formula presented.), provided that 1 ≤ t ≤ k ≤ v/2 and there is at least one such system. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc

Synchronous operation control of the Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine

    , Article IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics, 4 July 2010 through 7 July 2010 ; July , 2010 , Pages 1510-1516 ; 9781424463916 (ISBN) Barati, F ; Shao, S ; Abdi, E ; Oraee, H ; McMahon, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The paper presents a novel vector control structure for the Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine (BDFM) which is derived based on the machine synchronous operation. In fact, the synchronous operation of the BDFM provides an efficient approach for determining the required reference angle in the machine vector control structure. The utilization of such reference angle makes the vector control structure presented in this paper different from and, in fact, more effective than the existing rotor flux and stator flux orientation schemes proposed for the machine. The results of implementing the vector control scheme in simulations confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach for the BDFM control

On the links of vertices in simplicial d-complexes embeddable in the euclidean 2d-space

    , Article Discrete and Computational Geometry ; 2017 , Pages 1-17 ; 01795376 (ISSN) Parsa, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We consider d-dimensional simplicial complexes which can be PL embedded in the 2d-dimensional Euclidean space. In short, we show that in any such complex, for any three vertices, the intersection of the link-complexes of the vertices is linklessly embeddable in the (Formula presented.)-dimensional Euclidean space. In addition, we use similar considerations on links of vertices to derive a new asymptotic upper bound on the total number of d-simplices in an (continuously) embeddable complex in 2d-space with n vertices, improving known upper bounds, for all (Formula presented.). Moreover, we show that the same asymptotic bound also applies to the size of d-complexes linklessly embeddable in the...

Entropy-based video steganalysis of motion vectors

    Abstract
In this paper, a new method is proposed for motion vector steganalysis using the entropy value and its combination with the features of the optimized motion vector. In this method, the entropy of blocks is calculated to determine their texture and the precision of their motion vectors. Then, by using a fuzzy cluster, the blocks are clustered into the blocks with high and low texture, while the membership function of each block to a high texture class indicates the texture of that block. These membership functions are used to weight the effective features that are extracted by reconstructing the motion estimation equations. Characteristics of the results indicate that the use of entropy and...

    Two-Dimensional (bivariate) jump-diffusion processes

    Abstract
In this chapter we provide a generalization of jump-diffusion precesses (12.1) in two dimensions by considering a class of coupled systems that are described by a bivariate state vector x(t) contained in a two-dimensional state space {x}. The evolution of the state vector x(t) is assumed to be governed by a deterministic part to which diffusion parts and jump contributions are added. Generalization of the results to higher dimensions is straightforward. We note that for N multivariate time series, by assuming the presence of two-body type of interactions between time series, the analysis will reduce to analysing N(N − 1)/2 pairwise bivariate time series. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland...

    Abstract
In this paper, new vector quantization (VQ) based techniques for reducing the effect of channel noise in image transmission are introduced. In one of the proposed methods, i.e., component VQ (CVQ), by transmitting the components of code-vectors (and not their indices), we will be able to reduce the effect of channel noise. To decrease the output rate of CVQ, a modification of CVQ called sub-index VQ (SIVQ) is introduced. This method has error-correcting capability as well. Simulation results show that CVQ and SIVQ techniques are robust to channel errors and surpass the conventional method, in which the indices of the selected code-vectors are protected using a Reed-Solomon code. An error...

Numerical investigation of optimization of injection angle effects on fluidic thrust vectoring

    Abstract
A computational investigation was conducted to optimize the fluidic injection angle effects on thrust vectoring. Numerical simulation of fluidic injection for shock vector control, with a convergent-divergent nozzle concept was performed, using URANS approach with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model. The fluidic injection angles from 60° to 120° were investigated at different aerodynamic and geometric conditions. The current investigation demonstrated that secondary injection angle is an essential parameter in fluidic thrust vectoring. Computational results indicated that, optimizing secondary injection angle would have positive impact on thrust vectoring performance. Furthermore, in most...

Statistical feature embedding for heart sound classification

    Abstract
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is considered as one of the principal causes of death in the world. Over recent years, this field of study has attracted researchers' attention to investigate heart sounds' patterns for disease diagnostics. In this study, an approach is proposed for normal/abnormal heart sound classification on the Physionet challenge 2016 dataset. For the first time, a fixed length feature vector; called i-vector; is extracted from each heart sound using Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) features. Afterwards, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) transform and Variational Autoencoder (VAE) are applied on the i-vector to achieve dimension reduction. Eventually, the reduced...

    Abstract
In 2011, Haemers asked the following question: If S is the Seidel matrix of a graph of order n and S is singular, does there exist an eigenvector of S corresponding to 0 which has only ±1 elements? In this paper, we construct infinite families of graphs which give a negative answer to this question. One of our constructions implies that for every natural number N, there exists a graph whose Seidel matrix S is singular such that for any integer vector in the nullspace of S, the absolute value of any entry in this vector is more than N. We also derive some characteristics of vectors in the nullspace of Seidel matrices, which lead to some necessary conditions for the singularity of Seidel...

    Abstract
This paper reports the results of SIMD implementation of a number of interpolation algorithms on common personal computers. These methods fit a curve on some given input points for which a mathematical function form is not known. We have implemented four widely used methods using vector processing capabilities embedded in Pentium processors. By using SSE (streaming SIMD extension) we could perform all operations on four packed single-precision (32-bit) floating point values simultaneously. Therefore, the running time decreases three times or even more depending on the number of points and the interpolation method. We have implemented four interpolation methods using SSE technology then...

    Abstract
A search is presented for a heavy W′ boson resonance decaying to a B or T vector-like quark and a t or a b quark, respectively. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collisions collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Both decay channels result in a signature with a t quark, a Higgs or Z boson, and a b quark, each produced with a significant Lorentz boost. The all-hadronic decays of the Higgs or Z boson and of the t quark are selected using jet substructure techniques to reduce standard model backgrounds, resulting in a distinct three-jet W′ boson decay signature. No significant...

Vector model utilization for nested-loop rotor Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine analysis, control and simulation

    , Article PEDSTC 2010 - 1st Power Electronics and Drive Systems and Technologies Conference, 17 February 2010 through 18 February 2010 ; 2010 , Pages 295-301 ; 9781424459728 (ISBN) Barati, F ; Oraee, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper presents different applications of a vector model developed by the authors in Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine (BDFM) studies including analysis, control and simulations. The BDFM considered consists of a nested-loop type rotor. The vector model, which considers all the loops in each rotor nest, is derived using BDFM coupled-circuit model equations and by applying appropriate vector transformations. Three vector transformations are employed for the derivation of vector model corresponding to two three-phase windings in the stator and the rotor circuit. Each transformation consists of an angle which is, in general, unspecified and must be assigned appropriately depending on the...

Adaptive compensation of gyro bias in rigid-body attitude estimation using a single vector measurement

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control ; Volume 58, Issue 7 , 2013 , Pages 1816-1822 ; 00189286 (ISSN) Namvar, M ; Safaei, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The presence of bias in measurement of rate gyros is a performance limiting factor for satellite attitude determination systems. Gyro bias is usually handled by Kalman filtering methods which are mostly based on linearization approaches and lack global convergence properties. On the other hand, the existing asymptotically convergent nonlinear observers take into account the gyro bias only when multiple vector measurements are available. We present an asymptotically convergent attitude estimator which uses only one vector measurement and a rate gyro whose output is contaminated with an unknown and constant bias. The effect of unknown bias is compensated by means of a parameter adaptation law....

Output feedback control of satellite attitude using a single vector measurement

    Abstract
The existing methods in attitude control of satellites are based on employing the estimate of satellite attitude which is usually generated by using multiple vector measurements. In this paper we propose an output feedback control law that directly uses a single vector measurement and gyro, and without any need for estimating the satellite attitude. The output feedback gain is computed by solving a generalized Riccati time varying differential equation. We assume the moment-of-inertia matrix of satellite is unknown. The controller guarantees asymptotic convergence of the attitude to its desired value. A realistic simulation is presented where a magnetometer is used to provide the single...

    Abstract
In this paper, we present a method for estimating the signal sources steering vector using an arbitrary planar array with omnidirectional elements. The proposed method improves the initial estimation of the signal steering vector in two steps. In the first step of this algorithm we minimize of the distance between the steering vector and the signal subspace. The second step improves the estimation of the first step using a defined cost function which is based on a structural criterion for signal steering vector. Simulation results show the capability of the proposed signal steering vector estimate improvement

Global attitude estimation using single delayed vector measurement and biased gyro

    , Article Automatica ; Volume 75 , 2017 , Pages 88-95 ; 00051098 (ISSN) Bahrami, S ; Namvar, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Time delay in attitude determination systems is unavoidable and it is usually caused by low-quality data sampling, poor sensor synchronization, momentary sensor outage or operational restrictions of sensors. Despite its performance-degrading effect, time delay has been widely neglected in the existing attitude estimation methods. This paper presents a general framework for design of attitude estimators with and without SO(3) manifold restriction by assuming that measurement of a single vector measurement is available with time delay. Also, measurement of rigid-body angular velocity is considered available with an unknown bias. The proposed estimator guarantees global and asymptotic...

    Abstract
In this paper we will address two major problems in mammogram analysis for breast cancer in MR-images. The first is classification between normal and abnormal cases and then, discrimination between benign and malignant in cancerous cases. Our proposed method extracts textural and statistical descriptive features that are fed to a learning engine based on the use of Support Vector Machine learning framework to categorize them. The obtained results show excellent accuracy in both classification problems, that proves the appropriate combination of our features and selecting powerful classifier i.e. Support Vector Machine leads us to a brilliant outcome
