Numerical study of flow-induced oscillations of two rigid plates elastically hinged at the two ends of a stationary plate in a cross-flow

    , Article Journal of Fluids and Structures ; Volume 66 , 2016 , Pages 147-169 ; 08899746 (ISSN) Darbandi, M ; Fouladi, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Academic Press  2016
    Abstract
The flow-induced oscillation (FIO) of bluff bodies is commonly encountered in the fluid structure interaction (FSI) problems. In this study, we use an unstructured moving grid strategy and simulate the FIO of two rigid plates, which are elastically hinged at the two ends of a fixed flat plate in a cross-flow. We use a hybrid finite-element-volume (FEV) method in an arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) framework to study FIO of the two hinged plates. The current simulations are carried out for wide ranges of flow Reynolds number (50–175), spring stiffness coefficient, and the two hinged plates’ moment of inertia magnitudes. The influences of these parameters are investigated on the magnitudes...

Thus, an accurate and direct modeling technique is introduced for modeling stepped circular plate on an arbitrary variable elastic foundation with arbitrary boundary conditions and internal elastic ring support. The effect of the translational along with rotational support flexibilities, as well as, the elastic coefficient of Winkler foundation and...

    , Article Composite Structures ; Volume 147 , 2016 , Pages 185-196 ; 02638223 (ISSN) Mahmoudkhani, S ; Sadeghmanesh, M ; Haddadpour, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2016
    Abstract
The aero-thermo-elastic stability of layered cylindrical shells with viscoelstic cores is investigated. The Donnell's shell theory for the outer layers and the first order shear deformation theory for the viscoelastic layer are employed in conjunction with the von Karman-Donnell kinematic nonlinearity to construct the model. The pre-stresses and pre-deformations arisen from the temperature rise and static aerodynamic pressure are first determined by solving the nonlinear thermo-elastic equilibrium equations using by an exact analytical method. The results are then used in the linear aeroelastic stability equations and analyzed with the Galerkin's procedure to determine the supersonic flutter...

The results of simulations are compared with existing layerwise, first-order shear-deformation theory and experimental tests where it shows the accuracy and functionality of the present model. The complex shear modulus of magneto-rheological fluid has been determined...

Modified fresnel zone plate - an example for systematic excitation of subradiant modes of a plasmonic structure

    , Article IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics ; Volume 53, Issue 2 , 2017 ; 00189197 (ISSN) Armand, M. J ; Khajeahsani, M. S ; Shahmansouri, A ; Rashidian, B ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2017
    Abstract
Subradiant modes can exhibit sharper spectral response, and lower radiative loss compared to the super-radiant modes of plasmonic nanostructures. Selective excitation of these modes is challenging, and has practical importance. In this paper, a systematic procedure for determining, and individually exciting the subradiant modes of a plasmonic nanostructure is presented by utilizing our previously reported T-matrix formulation. As an example, we calculate various modes of a gold nanodimer, and determine the incident field required for exciting a subradiant mode of this nanostructure. This field is then generated by a modified zone plate lens. The expansion of scattered field, as well as the...

Standard and boundary layer perturbation approaches to predict nonlinear axisymmetric behavior of cylindrical shells

    , Article Composite Structures ; Volume 204 , 2018 , Pages 855-881 ; 02638223 (ISSN) Fallah, F ; Taati, E ; Asghari, M ; Reddy, J. N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
The feasibility and performance of standard and boundary layer perturbation techniques in nonlinear analyses of cylindrical shells are investigated. To this end, the nonlinear axisymmetric behavior of short and long functionally graded (FG) cylindrical shells is considered. The nonlinear governing equations of shell theory with first-order approximation and the von Karman nonlinearity are decoupled. This uncoupling makes it possible to present an analytical solution. A new boundary layer perturbation solution is presented by reducing the governing equations to a normalized form of boundary-layer type. Also, the uncoupled governing equations are solved using standard one-, two-, and...

Hydroelastic criterion for an inclined flat plate in vertical and oblique impacts

    , Article Applied Ocean Research ; Volume 79 , 2018 , Pages 173-183 ; 01411187 (ISSN) Moradi, H ; Rahbar Ranji, A ; Haddadpour, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A two-dimensional semi-analytical model is applied for the analysis of hydroelastic effect during vertical and oblique impacts of flexible inclined plates with different boundary conditions (BCs). Hydrodynamic pressure is calculated using Wagner's theory and the structural deformation is presented as a linear combination of dry normal modes. A longitudinal strip is used as an approximation of the longitudinal bending of a plate. Model predictions are validated by comparing with the available experimental data, semi-analytical model, and asymptotic approaches for vertical and oblique impacts of the plate with different BCs. The water impact is analyzed with two viewpoints of rigid and...

    Abstract
Due to high vulnerability of steel structures to elevated temperatures and the need for taking adequate and effective measures to reduce human and financial losses in fires, a thorough understanding of such behaviour is of utmost importance. In this research, a half-scale 3D model, comprising moment-resisting frames, equipped with flush end-plate connections, in one direction, and braced frames in the other, was subjected to a scaled ISO 834 standard fire. The maximum attained temperature was 1055 °C. The results showed that the structure tolerates high temperatures for an appreciable amount of time before collapsing. Moreover, for thick flush end-plates, which were used in this study, the...

    Abstract
Analytical and numerical study of graphene ribbons has become a prime focus of recent research due to their potential applications in tunable absorption, wavefront manipulation, polarization conversion, and so on. In this paper, an accurate analysis of a perfect electric conductor (PEC)–backed array of graphene ribbons (PAGR) is presented based on the well-known electromagnetic (EM) image theorem, where the induced currents are theoretically derived under a transverse-magnetic-polarized incident wave. For the first time, the proposed analysis rigorously incorporates the EM coupling effects between the PEC back plate and the subwavelength array of graphene ribbons. It is proved that the...

    Abstract
In this paper, the effects of different parameters on the nonlinear aeroelastic behavior of functionally graded flat plates are investigated. Considering the through-the-thickness continuous variation of the material properties, a combination of the simple rule of mixtures and the Mori-Tanaka scheme is used for estimating the effective properties at each point. The von-Karman large strains and the piston theory are used to model the structural nonlinearity and aerodynamic loading, respectively. By Hamilton's principle the governing nonlinear partial differential equations of motion are derived and then converted to a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations using the Galerkin method....

Application of active piezoelectric patches in controlling the dynamic response of a thin rectangular plate under a moving mass

    , Article International Journal of Solids and Structures ; Volume 46, Issue 11-12 , 2009 , Pages 2429-2443 ; 00207683 (ISSN) Rahimzadeh Rofooei, F ; Nikkhoo, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The governing differential equation of motion for an undamped thin rectangular plate with a number of bonded piezoelectric patches on its surface and arbitrary boundary conditions is derived using Hamilton's principle. A moving mass traveling on an arbitrary trajectory acts as an external excitation for the system. The effect of the moving mass inertia is considered using all the out-of-plane translational acceleration components. The method of eigenfunction expansion is used to transform the equation of motion into a number of coupled ordinary differential equations. A classical closed-loop optimal control algorithm is employed to suppress the dynamic response of the system, determining the...

Steel plate shear walls having door openings with different arrangements of stiffeners

    , Article Advances in Structural Engineering ; Volume 22, Issue 10 , 2019 , Pages 2222-2235 ; 13694332 (ISSN) Rostami, P ; Mofid, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    SAGE Publications Inc  2019
    Abstract
As steel plate shear walls are typically used in the building central cores around the elevators and stairs, introduction of an opening as door seems to be inevitable in steel plate shear wall spans. Due to the weakening of the steel plate shear walls’ performance caused by this particular type of opening, the use of stiffeners around the opening is necessary. Nevertheless, introduction of stiffeners around all sides of the opening, which does continue to boundary elements, is very expensive and inefficient. Therefore, the study on the effect of different arrangements of stiffeners on the behavior of steel plate shear walls is significant. In this research, a number of steel plate shear...

    Abstract
Heave plates are structural components of a floating structure whose primary purpose is to increase damping and added mass in heave or pitch direction. If multiple plates are stacked along a common axis, then the relative diameters and spacing in between are important factors affecting the performance. In the present study, hydrodynamic coefficients of single, double and triple disks are experimentally investigated in different arrangements as Uniform, Concave and Convex edge shapes. It is observed that each disk in a multiple arrangement with lower diameter ratio have better hydrodynamic performance compared to the cases with higher diameter ratio when the spacing is small compared to the...

Investigation of shear lag effect on tension members fillet-welded connections consisting of single and double channel sections

    , Article Structural Engineering and Mechanics ; Volume 74, Issue 3 , 2020 , Pages 445-455 Barkhori, M ; Maleki, S ; Mirtaheri, M ; Nazeryan, M ; Seyed Mahdi, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Shear lag phenomenon has long been taken into consideration in various structural codes; however, the AISC provisions have not proposed any specific equation to calculate the shear lag ratio in some cases such as fillet-welded connections of front-to-front double channel sections. Moreover, those equations and formulas proposed by structural codes are based on the studies that were conducted on riveted and bolted connections, and can be applied to single channel sections whilst using them for fillet-welded double channels would be extremely conservative due to the symmetrical shape and the fact that bending moments will not develop in the gusset plate, resulting in less stress concentration....

    Abstract
Buckling and post-buckling behaviors of geometrically imperfect annular sector plates made from nanoparticle reinforced composites have been investigated. Two types of nanoparticles are considered including graphene oxide powders (GOPs) and silicone oxide (SiO2). Nanoparticles are considered to have uniform and functionally graded distributions within the matrix and the material properties are derived using Halpin-Tsai procedure. Annular sector plate is formulated based upon thin shell theory considering geometric nonlinearity and imperfectness. After solving the governing equations via Galerkin’s technique, it is showed that the post-buckling curves of annular sector plates rely on the...

Using the hybrid DAS-SR method for damage localization in composite plates

    , Article Composite Structures ; Volume 247 , 2020 Nokhbatolfoghahai, A ; Navazi, H. M ; Groves, R. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
In this paper, the hybrid Delay-And-Sum (DAS) with Sparse Reconstruction (SR) method was further developed for damage location in composite plates. In composite materials, anisotropy leads to some challenges in using conventional damage location methods, which are developed for isotropic materials. In the hybrid DAS-SR method, the DAS and SR methods were combined as a complement of each other. To investigate the DAS-SR method for composite structures, the group velocity of the travelling wave for different directions was first measured experimentally via PZTs. The DAS and SR formulations were then modified to be compatible with the direction-dependent group velocities. The results show that...

Free-edge stresses in general composite laminates

    , Article International Journal of Mechanical Sciences ; Volume 50, Issue 10-11 , 2008 , Pages 1435-1447 ; 00207403 (ISSN) Nosier, A ; Maleki, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In the present study, by starting from the reduced form of elasticity displacement field for a long flat laminate, an analytical method is developed in order to accurately calculate the interlaminar stresses near the free edges of generally laminated composite plates under extension. The constant parameter appearing in the reduced displacement field, which describes the global rotational deformation of a laminate, is appropriately obtained by employing an improved first-order shear deformation theory. The accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed first-order theory are verified by means of comparison with the results of Reddy's layerwise theory as a three-dimensional benchmark. Reddy's...
