    Phase transformations during diffusion brazing of IN718/Ni-Cr-B/IN718

    Abstract
    The production of robust joints after diffusion brazing necessitates the advanced understanding of phase transformations during the bonding process. This paper aims to investigate the solidification and the solid state precipitation during diffusion brazing of wrought IN718 nickel base superalloy using Ni-15Cr-4B (wt-%) filler alloy. It was found that intermetallics containing eutectic type microconstituents were formed in the joint centreline by solidification which is controlled by segregation behaviour of B and its low solubility in Ni rich solid solution.     Abstract
    Transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding of Al2024-T6 alloy, using gallium (Ga) interlayer, has been investigated. Bonding process was carried out at 470°C for 6 min, and homogenising temperature and time were 495°C and 2 h respectively. Conventional TLP bonding using Ga interlayer was not an appropriate method for joining of Al2024. In this method, the boundary between two Al2024 specimens was not fully eliminated during bonding because of solidification with planar front. In addition, bonding zone was depleted of copper, and as a result, tensile and shear strength of joint decreased to 200 and 110 MPa respectively.     Abstract
    The application of the multi-component Fe-based filler metals (FMs) for transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding of AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel has been overshadowed by dissimilar interlayers merely due to their shorter isothermal solidification time. However, the latter usually suffers from low efficiency in terms of mechanical properties even after homogenization of heat treatment. This study shows that by imposing a temperature gradient across the bond line during the TLP bonding process (TG-TLP), it is possible to reduce the isothermal solidification time significantly.     Accumulative roll bonding (ARB) is used as a novel method to produce particle reinforced metal matrix composites (MMCs). Roll bonding of the sheets with layers of powder on their surfaces is the main stage in this process and it has been found that quality of the bonding has an important role in properties of the product.     Utilizing the so-called tube spinning, a cold-bonding process entitled as "spin-bonding" is developed to produce seamless thin-walled clad tubes and cylinders. By this method, two layers of AA 1050 tubes were successfully bonded together to form a clad tube at room temperature. Based on mechanical aspects of the tube spinning process, the mechanism of spin-bonding is explained in two stages: surface preparation before occurrence of a stable bond and bond strengthening thereafter. The furnace atmosphere in the first stage was argon gas with 2 × 10-6 atm oxygen partial pressure. In the second stage, the furnace atmosphere was same as the first stage except for the cooling interval between 900 and 1000 °C, the hydrogen gas was injected into furnace atmosphere.     Abstract
    The fabrication of Ni/Ti laminated composite via cross accumulative roll bonding (CARB) and subsequent annealing treatment has been studied. The relationships between annealing conditions and microstructure at interfaces of Ni/Ti have been investigated by SEM, XRD, and EDS analyses. The results show that the layers were well-bonded by the CARB process, and by increasing the temperature and time of annealing treatment, the interfacial layers grew as a result of the interdiffusion of Ni and Ti atoms.
