  7. Abstract:
  8. Nowadays, by proliferation the basis of the phasor-based synchronous wide area measurement system (WAMS), its application for improving electromechanical oscillations damping has been considered by researchers. In interconnected power systems, inter-area modes are usually critical modes. There are two approaches for damping these modes by utilizing WAMS: 1) the traditional approach of using power system stabilizers with wide area signals; and 2) discrete corrective actions by changing the operating conditions. The first approach requires a thorough study at the design stage, installation and testing. Besides, the controller is designed for a specific operating point. Nevertheless, in the operation of the power system, there may be situations that the performance of these controllers does not suffice for damping oscillations. In that case, the use of remedial actions such as the generators redispatch, lines switching, demand side management and changing the generators terminal voltage can be effective. Considering the very few researches based on this approach, in this thesis, damping critical electromechanical oscillations of power system via remedial actions has been explored. This approach comprises two steps: online monitoring of the system small signal stability, and implementation of appropriate corrective actions to damp the critical modes. For this purpose, firstly, new methods with low computational burden, which are applicable in both abminet and ringdown conditions of power system operation, are presented for the online estimation of electromechanical modes. Then, a comprehensive approach that uses power system model and synchronous measurement data for determining the appropriate corrective action is introduced. In the proposed method, sensitivity factors of the electromechanical modes with respect to various corrective actions are determined. Finally, considering the security constraints of the system such as the bus voltages limit, reactive power of the generators, loadability of transmission lines, as well as economic issues, the best set of remedial actions is determined. To do so, a mixed integer nonlinear optimization problem is proposed. All the methods presented in this thesis are verified using standard test systems
