Development of a Fault Detection Algorithm for a PFI Engine Based on ECU Output Signals

  8. Electronic engine control unit (ECU) operates the different actuators using information signals received from the different sensors. Also in the case of any fault in the sensors and actuators operation ECU is responsible to detect and alert the accruing faults. Most of the common faults in the engine such as leakage in intake system and ignition system are not detectable by ECU, on the other hand ECU fault codes some times are hard to interpret or misleading. So fault diagnosis is usually based on experience of repair staff, and might be time consuming and inaccurate. In this study, using the knowledge of premixed fuel injection SI engines and emission generation and statistical data, methods for fault detection and fault diagnosis based on ECU signals and emission factors has been developed. These methods have been tested and verified on a sample engine. For this reason a model of a faultless engine in different operating conditions has been developed and by comparing the engine working parameters and those of predicted with the model (residuals), the algorithm for fault detection developed and by means of different classification algorithm fault diagnosis has been achieved. At the end on sample vehicle major faults of intake system, fuel injection and ignition system implemented and emission factors and ECU output signals investigated to enhance the effectiveness of the fault diagnosis algorithm. A software also developed to acquire engine data with higher frequency than common commercial diagnosis software so without any further equipment rather than this software and ECU signals fault diagnosis would by possible
